First thing we did when we started planning everything was spend the day reading everything we could find on Edugeek. The depth of knowledge on here was astounding as a lot had gone through the procedure. As for WDS there is a sticky thread on that although I'd go MDT2010 with WDS. Then once you have read everything ask away. It sounds like I'm being awkward but trust me reading everything will get you quite far. Gareth

finished T215 last year. Didn't enjoy it at all - but each to their own. So far I've done M150, T175, Mu123 and T215. I've started TT284 this week. All going towards B62 -BSc(Hons) Computing and IT. I started the course because I don't have an IT or Computing degree. Environmental Science with Animal Behaviour for me. Also atthe time Tesco were paying with Clubcard vouchers. We also use Epson. The only issue we have seen in the past fornight is that older Epson projectors use an figure 8 cable for power whilst new projectors from Epson use a 3 pin power. This has meant getting someone in to fit new power cables into our high ceilings (old school building). I'm glad the ceiling mounts didn't need replacing or the cost would have been higher. Other than that the Epson projectors have been excellent and we have standardised on them for the past 5 years. Regards Gareth

We took a contract out with Konica Minolta and have had machines on 3 and 5 year contract as we remove the majority of our network printers. We have 10 Multi function devices (MFDs) and 5 have just come to the end of their 5 year contract. @rich_tech and I took ownership of the copiers to see where we could save money. So after looking at the costs on a monthly spreadsheet over the past year we decided that we could ditch three of them and this is what we are doing in the knowledge that if we were wrong we could just get another one in for a contracted period of time. The problem we have is that there is old printer stock around the room and no printers to use them with. Anyone interested? I'm not sure what the dates are on them. Maybe I will put them on the department ebay account. The management of them is a lot easier now. Gareth

Evening, Not sure anyone can help but I'll cross my fingers. Here we go.... for the past two/three years the LEA have been using Netsweeper as their preferred filtering solution. It was put in to replace Websense which wasn't really doing the job. So the LEA and Netsweeper cobbled together something and all was good. From what I gather it was put behind an ISA box and a special plug-in written. This plug-in kept crashing due to memory leaks and the LEA started looking for something else. They have now moved over to the Squid version of Netsweeper and it isn't working properly. Browsing the web is fine in IE and Firefox but the moment you want to use a plug in such as Java (e.g. to access yousrc.com ) or if you want to use a piece of software such as iTunes or gotomeeting then you are immediately challenged with an authentication box (see picture attached). The LEA are at a loss. Entering credentials are not working. I've contacted Netsweeper and they have asked for the squid.conf file - which I do not have as I don't have access to the Netsweeper boxes. Has anyone seen this before? Would anyone have any idea what changes I could ask the LEA to make? It's affecting lessons as we cannot teach our Java lesson (again using yousrc.com). I've asked the LEA for the squid.conf file but I very much doubt they would give it to me. Netsweeper (in their defence) are helping me even though the support contract is with the LEA. I'm bypassing the normal channels because nothing is happening. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to here them. Many thanks Gareth

I'll add to what @GrumbleDook and @drdos256 have already said - the CAS group is an ideal place to find information - although beware I get the feeling sometimes that they are fed up of answering the same question ('What language to study at alevel?'). It seems to be asked on a weekly basis. Once you join it may be a good idea to search the Google Archive of the mailing list posts. Plenty of information there. As @drdos256 points out the Wiki is an excellent area for resources. Gareth

I love the way that if you choose 'About Shockwave' when running the plug in it still tries to take you to www.macromedia.com - how retro :-) I thought they would have changed that by now even though it does redirect to the correct Adobe page. What a boring post was. Gareth

Evening, This may or may not be relevant to you but I'l post it anyway. I was told this evening that the Government are changing the ways VAT is charged for educational services. For example as it is now if University A sells a service to University B they have to charge 20% VAT. This is set to change as a push for supplying educational services. It seems that we can may now be able to piggy back onto university procurement services. If for example University A purchases 300 new PCs then they don't pay VAT. As a school we can piggy back onto that with out order taking full advantage of any price discount given to the university for such a large order. They would then sell them onto us. It seems if they are a charity then the Uni cannot add anything more to the cost as they cannot make a profit (I assume a small admin fee would be okay). It should in theory work out cheaper than if we purchased 50 machines on our own. Buying in bulk etc etc. Maybe you guys were already aware of this, but it was news to me. If you didn't know then maybe it's time to get friendlier with your local Uni procurement team. I assume it also works between schools selling from A to B. Comments? Corrections? Regards Gareth

We had one delivered today and whilst I am aware that we could probably do most of it with other cheaper solutions (free in some cases) this did everything that we needed. It has a TV card and it was a doddle to setup and use. Within 20 mins we had our own template in place with areas updating. Very happy. Now to find the cheapest price - because it ain't cheap. Gareth

It seems to me that once you have a box and the software then unless something major happens it will do what you want forever - regardless of whether they support it. Once it's yours can you then open it and see what hardware is inside? Gareth

Shame really as it's an excellent piece of software. I've been testing the free/old one for over 4 months now and am considering moving it out to staff. The only problem I've come across is that it doesn't hold your signatures. Gareth
