Hi @rount2it - a bit late to this post but we are also looking at Emco Remote Shutdown and wondered you could give me some info on how it's held up (DM if you want). Also - who did you purchase it from as a school - cannot find much about purchase orders. I have mailed them but am waiting for a response. Regards Gareth

Second Network on a Virtual Network
garethEds replied to garethEds's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
What is GNS3? I've found the website but not a clue what it does. -
If we were to get a dedicated line into our school instead of the LEA broadband what would people advise for a firewall? Many moons ago we used to use an ISA box - but this was software based. What options are there out there? Thanks Gareth
-
And I think this is where the LEA have us by the gonads as it means we would still need to pay for the link into their network as it is a centrally hosted SIMS setup. So it means we would need to pay LEA broadband. Grrrr. Annoying.

Second Network on a Virtual Network

Cheers @AButters - you are right of course. I will look at this during the next round of funding I get in April. Gareth -
HI All, We have our network services running from a HP box running HYperV2012r2. Two HP boxes with a 10Tb SAN run the services. All can see the network and it all runs lovely. We have one virtual switch. I want to start playing with setting up my own network from scratch. One DC (maybe 2016) and two networked machines (one to admin and one for example curriculum). This would need it's own IP address range etc and it cannot interfere with the other network (yet it may need internet access via the other network). Sounds complicated to me - but can it be done and can anyone help or advise? Thanks Gareth

Hi All, Our SLA costings for ICT Services from the LEA have just arrived and I have been asked my the HT here to look at what we are paying for and for whether it is worth it. SIMS is one area where we feel tied into the LEA. But... if we were to go it alone, what are the initial setup costs for SIMS? Does it work of a virtual server? etc etc. Has anyone out there got experience of leaving their LEA SIMS provision, exporting the data (recent and historical) and going it alone? Please to get in touch. Thanks Gareth

Good morning All, Are there any Azure experts out there that could discuss costings with me? We have an Azure AD with all our users in there. It syncs passwords with our network which is great. I want to purchase the Room Booking System and get it to authenticate against our Azure AD - but it means setting it up at a monthly cost. I need help with this and working out what the cost would be. Can anyone DM me and we can arrange a chat? Thanks Gareth

Should I stay or should I go now - Smoothwall
garethEds replied to Simcfc73's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Before we went with the LEA solution (which is Smoothwall - which has broken over the past few weeks) we were with Censornet. We had been with them since early versions and ended our relationship at version 3 which was very good. Tim Lloyd - the guy who runs the company was always very pro-active in dealing with queries we had. I'm not sure what sort of company they are now but based on previous experience I would go there first if our LEA alliance was to fall down. Gareth -
Hi all, A friend of mine (Hannah) has written a book called 'No Run Intended' and is selling it through Amazon. It is 99p on the Kindle with Amazon taking 70p of every sale. If it an inspirational book about how she started running and the second edition (which is edited better) is now out there. If you are thinking of running and need some inspiration, or, fancy supporting the author for 99p then the link is here. Let me know if you buy it. No worries if you do not. Just ignore this post. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B014FWOMNE?ie=UTF8&at=aw-android-pc-uk-21&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links EDIT - I've just been told there is another one for a larger price. So please ignore my message about 99p etc etc https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B014FWOMNE?ie=UTF8&at=aw-android-pc-uk-21&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links It was written to raise money for charity as well. Thanks everyone, Gareth

evening, One of my pupils is writing a Visual Basic front end which manipulates an Access 2016 file (the back end). She has to use SQL for some of the manipluation. She is after some advice (I'm researching also) - she wants to delete a record so... 1. The table is displayed in a form in datagrid view. 2. She can choose a row and hit a delete button - it removes the row. She has managed to code all of this. The screen updates itself and the row is gone. Howeever - it does not delete it from the Access file and when she re-loads the whole application, the record is still there. Can anyone advise how to actually remove the record from the Access file and not simply from the data grid view? Any code would be handy. Cheers Gareth

IT curriculum planning/ teaching
garethEds replied to Stormborn15's topic in Learning Network Manager
Maybe not @3s-gtech - but I guarantee that you could offer a unique perspective that no teacher could offer with regards to technologies. GJE - - - Updated - - - Aww shucks. I'm sure I annoy our NM. GJE -
Hi TavSd - will do so. We have followed everything here: Google Cloud Print: printer is reported as off-line - EveryonePrint Leading Mobile Print solution We've even removed the Smoothwall device in the middle. Log files on the way. Gareth

Yes we can. Gareth

Good afternoon everyone, Latest work involves trying to get our Chromebooks to print to our curriculum printers via EveryonePrint (Home - EveryonePrint Leading Mobile Print solution) - simply cannot get my printers to show as being online. So the setup is.... pCounter is installed and running on our curriculum network. All is well. The server has been allowed through the various VLANS and port filtering to allow port 5222 to talk.google.com (as advised by EveryOnePrint Support). EveryOnePrint is also installed on this printer and is configured to use Google Cloud Print. I have registered and shared the printer in Google CloudPrint and that seems to be working. The Chromebooks are connected to our wifi network. This is on a different IP range and VLAN. For this, we have another server - a Mobile Gateway (also as advised by the documentation). Despite being on a seperate VLAN, the Mobile Gateway can see our print server and vice versa. The Mobile gateway can also telnet on port 5222 to talk.google.com (again as advised by the docs). Everything is talking to where it should be yet our printers are still not showing as online. I know we (LEA and I) are missing something really simple. We have followed all of the documentation, allowed ports in and out - but something is wrong. Has anyone any experience with this product and can advise? Cheers Gareth

Afternoon all, Weirdly enough, I've just gone over to get serial numbers and cable numbers for the KVM and it seems to have woken up and is now working again. Really strange that it hasn't worked since before Christmas and now suddenly bang - it's there. Thanks everyone. Gareth
-
Afternoon All, We have a Belkin KVM screen on site which is meant to service 8 machines. However all are reporting as 'Out of Range'. I have connected a monitor and changed one of the machines to the lowest resolution possible but it is still showing out of range. The image then shows on the monitor. Plugging it back into the KVM then displays 'Out of Range' again. I've tried different cables but it makes no difference. Any help appreciated. Cheers Gareth

Clear as mud - so which one do I put on? LOL Gareth

I don't get this update stuff. As I look in the updates to install on my 2012r2 print server I see: 1. December, 2016 Security and Quality Rollup for .net etc etc etc# 2. December, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2012 R2 3. December, 2016 Security Only Quality Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 There is also one for Flash and MSRT Out of Numbers 2 and 3 - they sound the same. Do I assume that 2 has more updates in it than 3 (which is security only?) Have I missed a message somewhere explaining all of this? Any issues with December updates before I roll them out? Cheers Gareth

Evening all, I wonder if anyone knows of a Wordpress plugin that I can embed in a widget that rotates the titles of the latest posts (school news). I've tried several free ones from the plugin directory but cannot find one that works well enough for me to embed into the site. If you look at yggwyr.org.uk you will see I have a message across the middle of the page in an orange box. I'm looking for something similar but instead of static text, it rotates the latest 5 or so news headlines. If I have to pay for one - then so be it. Cheers Gareth

Well that makes sense. Do I need to change my VDISKSP ones to global? Not sure how I change their usage. I shall keep them how they are. Thanks for all your help with this. Gareth
-
@jcs808 - So if every drive fails over the coming years, they could all be called GlobalSP? I now have two Global Spares and two VDISK Spares - how do I make them part of the main array if I start running out of space? I noticed I can stop them being GlobalSP and they simply become 'Available' but how do I add them as drives that are used to store? Gareth
-
No - that's not what I meant. Disk 1 was originally part of the vDISK labelling. I've uploaded a picture. You can see that disk 14 has been removed so there are 13 drives in there. Drive 1 was the main failed one and originaly said vDISK (like the one next to it). HP instructions told be to configure this as a global spare and the system would claim it - but it's now not how it was originally. The Enclosure is all showing good again now with no orange or yellow warnings so I assume all is good - so am asking the question for my own knowledge. The extra spare (replacement) is now going in slot 14 as a global spare. yet I cannot see where to set it as a VDisk spare (as opposed to a global spare - which I can do). GJE
-
@jcs808 - So I've put the new drive in slot 1 of the enclosure and it said AVAIL. It has now been configured as a Global Spare but I'm not sure how to get it to say VDISK like all the others. Is it part of the VDISK array? When I put the second drive into slot 14 - I assume that is okay as a GLOBALSP even though the others are labeled as VDISKSP. How would I get it labeled as VDISKSP? I feel I'm missing some configuration options. I could run the provisioning wizard but am scared it will re-do the whole array and not just integrate my new disks. A quick look here: http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02254382 tells me that if the blue light is off (it was on) then Offline. The drive has been selected by amanagement application (SMU). Edit: The drive is now sitting there. No lights, but showing up in the console. Edit (15:07): Drive is sometimes blinking green. Enclosure is still showing degraded. I've removed disk 14 as advised by HP so that it can start reporting all things working (but this hasn't happened). Also trying to re-get a warranty. Am going to leave it overnight in case it is doing something. The docs say the SMU will grab the new drive and confogure it accordingly. Fingers crossed. Gareth
