Evening all, Over the Summer I am driving the family to France for a three week caravan 'oliday. I have an old Tom Tom but my wife has an iPhone 7S which is bigger. I use Google Maps for local sat nav stuff in the UK but I'd like to use Google Maps in France because my guess is it will be more up to date. Has anyone looked at the data usage of Google Maps? I've looked at downloading the maps but if I'm not using live GPS then surely I cannot use it as a sat nav. O2 have just contacted me to say my data allowance in their Eurozone will be usable under UK terms and conditions - so that's handy. Anyone done this? Cheers me deers, Gareth

Morning all, So, the plan now is to start looking at Windows 10 deployment after half term. I'm trying to put a list together of what needs to be done. Besides the standard import into MDT etc etc what steps do we have already? Is it worth making a sticky post that details the steps (have I missed one)? Remove unwanted apps - when? During deployment of the final image or during capture of the reference image? AppLocker - if apps are deleted as above, then why does this need to be activated? Start Menu - does a redirected start menu work now with the standard Windows 10 setup? What software are people putting into their reference build? We usually install the standard Microsoft libraries - the Visual C++ stuff. Office will go into the reference build of course as will our other standard stuff. Capture then deploy. What other steps do people have in there to make that perfect build for them? Gareth

I really want to move the school to Windows 10, but with all these issues on top of what other hassles I read here on Edugeek, I really think sticking with Windows 7 is best for another year (from September). Gareth

Good afternoon, As I put together this feasibility study for going it alone as a school for IT provision, my next step is to look at our broadband connections. In our area we have BT and we have Virgin. There are no local schools to ask, so I come here to ask - is anyone using products from these two companies? What sort of products do you have? I'm not spoken to BT yet. Virgin have come back with two options. Business Broadband at 300mbit down/15mbit up - seems slow going up. They also have their managed lines but are expensive (but monitored). We are a school with ~950 pupils using Office 365 so heavy broadband use. Pupils will soon have to save their files to OneDrive. We also need a second line for our wifi. Any advice or stories would be welcome. I will say again that this is for a feasibility study so no sales calls please. Gareth

I'm ressurecting this thread - great reading the advice here. I'm currently messing around with planning a 2016 domain in case (in case of what? I cannot say). SO I've not got the money to purchase new kit, so I have a server which is running 2016Server and then two W10 machines connected. I have setup AD, DHCP and DNS. That's about it. Next step is to start with GPOs I guess and AD structure. Any websites? Books? Videos? for reference? Gareth

Thanks Sir for the link. As for how we connect to our SAN - we go through the network cards with a switch in the middle. The switch is 1Gbit. We could not afford fibre channel stuff when we specced it up three/four years ago. Gareth

In fairness, it was @rich_tech that set it all up before he left. One of my biggest worries is that the server will take 2016. Gareth

Quick upgrade question - we have 2 HyperV servers working as a failover cluster. All vhds are on our SAN. Can I simply move all the vhds onto one server before clean installing one 2016 server? I cannot afford to turn everything off. Then once that server is setup and can see the other, move the vhds over to 2016 and upgrade the second server? Or is that approach too simplistic? Hi - how to you register the machines onto the network? We are after self-registration of the device onto the wifi and then using their school username/password to access everything. We used to have a guest network but now we have to give each device it's own key. we have been provided with a list of pre-shared keys but it's a hassle.

Leaving the LEA? Don't get me started on that :-) It's a conversations we are having but due to SIMS being held centrallry, they basically have us over a barrel. Gareth

Morning all, I'm not sure how other schools operate their wifi networks but as far as I am aware my LEA do not allow BYOD for pupils. I believe this is because of bandwidth worries (which I understand). However, with a Sixth Form centre, a unique selling point for us would be BYOD - especially as I guess the Sixth Form Colleges may offer it. We are also loosing Sixth Form pupils to the local bakery at lunchtimes because it has free wifi. So they go with their laptops and order food whilst surfing the web and not using their data allowances. This has a knock on effect of taking money away from the school dinner hall and the Sixth Form Cafe. So - has anyone looked into it? I have asked BT and O2 what they can offer. O2 supply McDonalds whilst BT supply places like STarbucks etc. I have no idea of the cost or the logistics but unless the LEA implement something soon it is an area we will have to consider. Any opinions or experience out there? Gareth

Wowsers - that threat kicked off a bit. We will stick with ActivInspire on our boards. It works. We are slowly moving away from replacing Promethean boards with Promethean boards and instead going for interactive projectors. Might not be as good - but cost wise they save us a packet. G
