Suggestion: Theatre, Lighting and Sound forum
ItsOggy replied to ItsOggy's topic in Comments and Suggestions
yeah, would love some moving lights, maninly to save me from getting the ladder out! We're just dimmer packs currently, Just ordered a pair of LED wireless colour changing lights! I hope the impress enough to replace a load of the old lights... -
This has been on my list of things to look at for a while after a couple of staff went, "oh I'm out of space for my photos, there's a load of space, I'll dummp them over there!" Thanks for this!

Hi, can I suggest a Theatre, Lighting and Sound forum, I don't think it fits under the current AV and media section. I'm about to start a revamp of our School Theatre, it's more and more a mix of IT and Theatre kit, would be good to have a place to descuss it!

I'm using a raspberry pi and chromium in full screen to display our twitter feed, I leave the page zoomed in and I use a tab rotate extension to switch between other pages like our solar power etc, seems to work well. Not perfect but was a cheep start!

Hi, I had all sorts of quirks with LTSB, I ended up doing it the old fashioned way, as my students don't have profiles, they just create a local one when logging in, I customised the default profile on the build, but without CopyProfile as some changes didn't come through, this thread talks about it as is not as simple as it used to be: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1116739-customizing-windows-10-default-profile-w-o-copyprofile Solved most of the quirks!

Schools Broadband - experiences
ItsOggy replied to 2097's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I always see a lot of ragging on SBB on here, it's a forum, people tend to share problems over positives, that's the nature of it. I'm a SBB customer, be it without the filtering, we run our own filter. Never had an issue with the connection uptime, support have always been responsive when I've had questions or asked for technical help. Overall would happily recommend them. -
VM here, I normally restore to a VM on a test server, and check it works, before each upgrade! Also useful for trying big changes to things before doing it live!
-
Server specs as always depend on users and size of DB, amount of load, but I'll give mine as an example. I run SIMS on a 2012r2 VM with SQL 2014: 2 x vCPU 8 GB Ram I'm not running discover, you'll probably want to double your spec for that!

Hi, I'm using pfsense for a firewall and Censornet as my filtering, very happy with both, would recommend Censornet, pricing is fairly good as well!

Enabling shadow copies / previous versions, any pointers?
ItsOggy replied to PrimaryTech's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
I've never used separate disks for shadow copies, always just turned it on with the default schedules and never looked at it again other than to grab files. As long as the drive has some free space it will be fine and manage it's self. Your Robocopy won't take the shadow copies, just the live data. I have VM's so I backup with veeam. If I need to look at older shadow copies it means restoring the VM to a dev location to investigate old ones but again you'll probably never need that! -
Hi, I'll start with some things that got me in the past! Check the machines have the SOLUS agent and are showing in the console. Make sure auto download and auto extract are turned on in SOLUS console for the SIMS, SOLUS, DEPLOYMENT SERVER etc, not auto deploy though! Make sure the clients .NET framework is recent 4.5 at least in my experience although 4.0 should work (can be found from SOLUS console) If there is a SOLUS update you may want to do that first, it's a good test all is well! I normally run the upgrade of an evening, because I have auto download and extract after download or whatever it's called, the clients will generally update if there on or next time they boot, normally it's quick enough to be done by the time there logged in (60 clients with sims). But if it's your first probably best at a time the help desk is open just in case! Hope this helps? Anyone else got more tips?

Is your SOLUS UI console the correct version, I updated SOLUS to 3.11 and everything (service, agents, SOLUS db) updated automatically but the UI console didn't so had to run manually.

Any IP restrictions on the receive connector?

In this case I would start from the W7 client logged in as admin: ipconfig /all Will give you the servers hosting DNS and DHCP as well as the gateway IP hosting your captive portal. Install RSAT on W7 and start looking at the AD, this can find the DC's and then look for GPO or Login scripts to indicate where the Home Directories live. Then browse each server via \\server and look at shares or printers etc. Even with the Linux boxes hosting windows based services this will give you a fairly quick overview. As for mail etc, I presume looking at how a user gets to there email would hold most clues. Finally... Start to document like the last lot should have!

In Sims go to Reports -> Import. In the folder that opens it should have the latest report def files.

I work for a school who has a leased line with them. Very happy with them. Support has always been good whenever I've needed it.

When I first went to roll out S3 last year I had issues at first, but once I got the GPO set for firewall / security options it was fine pushing from the console. I don't mind the S3 console, think I'm used to it now! I agree it's a pain if the target device isn't on or away from the network, would be nice if the agent install could be set to retry every few hours until successful of stopped!

If the user manually hits check for updates on the client side, would be interesting to know if it pulls it down.

Censornet - any comment/experiences??
ItsOggy replied to mikeprice's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yep, Have to agree, nice and easy to use and manage, the support has been good too. Although I didn't originally put it in, it was already in place when I came on board, was happy to renew it! -
I have just changed a school from starting the new academic year at the end of July back to the September start. No one really knew why our year started in July, moving back to September gives us more time to do the end of year stuff, fees, reports and mapping a for new year!

Moodle data and backup migration to new server
ItsOggy replied to bert113's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
It's been a while since I've moved a moodle install but I suspect you will need to restore the SQL file to a new db then install 2.7 and point it at the db / restore the moodledata folder and update to 3 after. I would guess the db structure may be very different!
