Hi EduGeeks, Hope you've all survived/are surviving in the recent bad weather My task today is to create a shortcut to a program on our Accounts Team's desktops and Start Menus. I am using GPO on a Server 2008 R2 domain controller, with the latest 1709 ADMX files. The EXE that the shortcut needs to point to is located on a shared network drive that is restricted to our Accounts team. During testing I found that simply adding the shortcut through Group Policy won't work, as the target EXE could not be found. I believe this is because the SYSTEM account that creates the shortcuts on the local machine has not got access to the EXE. So I moved the shortcut creation GPO into the User Policy rather than Computer Policy, and told it to run as the logged-on user. This then failed because by default our users have not got security permissions on the "%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" folder. Next I tried to add 'Everyone' and 'BUILTIN\Users' and granted them full control onto the following folders: > %AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\ > %SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop\ This created the shortcuts successfully. Great, I thought! However, now users cannot pin anything to their Start Menu. The option is no longer in the Context Menu for them. (Start Menu is applied using an XML file to add locked groups, then users can add anything else but not touch the defaults.) So my question: How would you wonderful people go about doing this? I can see a couple of options: Adding the SYSTEM account to be able to access our entire Accounts share. Really not ideal as I don't understand the full implications of allowing this. Finding the correct permissions to allow start menu/desktop items to be added by users whilst retaining the 'Add to Start Menu' option in the Context Menu. Hi all, First off - Yes I'm a bad person for still running old systems. Secondly, 2012 R2 rather than 2016 because we have licenses for it already. I'm working on deploying Windows 10 Pro x64 within our business (about 100 computers in all) and as part of this I'm separating out the roles on our oldest server running 2003 R2. It's currently a secondary Domain Controller (our primary is on 2008 R2 and a 2008 level forest), our print server (causing me no end of headaches!), our primary file server (including shared drives and staff work areas & profiles), and our WSUS server. Oh, and our only DHCP server, and primary DNS server (backup DNS also on the 2008 R2). This was apparently commissioned over a decade ago and was simply migrated from physical to virtual when we moved to Hyper-V. So I've created my new virtual 2012 R2 server, and will install the Print Server and WSUS roles. I am only planning on moving these for now as they will allow me to move ahead with my Windows 10 deployment before Christmas. Since I have never set up a WSUS server before, I thought it prudent to enquire with the fantastic knowledge and experience all of you wonderful people have - Are there any considerations I should be aware of when setting up a second WSUS server within the same environment (not one downstream of the first)? I'm only selecting 'Windows 10' on the new WSUS server. - We use Item Level Targeting in Group Policy to apply the WSUS settings (server, group etc.). Is it simply a case of creating a new GPO with the new server for the Windows 10 machines? - Has anyone come across any issues with Windows 10 and WSUS i.e. updates deploying, anything that needs to be blocked, etc? I guess most here will probably be using Windows 10 Edu rather than Pro. Many thanks everyone. I'm sorry for the amateur sounding questions, I'm trying to pre-empt anything I could **** up break.

Hi Jo, welcome back! I only registered on Edugeek when I left education. I didn't have the time for it when I was working in a school, although I did lurk a lot. Now that I'm in a private company and maintaining their infrastructure EduGeek is the best resource I could ever have Hope you're enjoying life outside of the public sector!

3CX lets you assign an 'Outbound Caller ID' to each extension, and you can assign multiple inbound DDI's to the same extension (or group). EDIT: Adding this video link on hunt groups.

I'm looking at adding Windows 10 to our WSUS server in the near future as I'm testing it for deployment, but we're still using an old Server 2003 R2 box for (amongst other things) our WSUS. From what I can read it won't even work, but if it does I'll post with how much of a size increase just selecting the 'Windows 10' product adds.

As a business that relies on our phone system, we use 3CX with support provided by Yellowgrid - Providing Local IT Support. I manage new extensions, external numbers, redirects, recordings etc. but we have the additional support for anything that is beyond me. We used to have phones on the desks but now use Softphones (which is an application on the computer) combined with headsets or handsets through the PC's 3.5mm audio/mic ports. I know that we used to use Yealink but can't comment on them, since we retired them before I started here. Currently the extension is determined by who is logged on to the computer and provisioned via email. At the Academy I used to work at we had a Mitel system with deskphones. These were good and easy to administer, and were set up and locked to an extension number before being placed on the desk. I also spent a brief time working for a call centre that used Mitel deskphones which we had to log in to. Easy enough to do once you got in to the habit. Feel free to PM me if you have any queries I can help with - I have only administered this 3CX system, but back when I was a junior tech my boss did run through the Mitel system with me at the time, and they both seem simple enough to use.

We mount SSD's using double-sided Velcro and masking tape where velcro seems insufficient. It was done this way when I started, and I'm finding them mounted to some inventive places within our Dell Optiplex 745 boxes! Never had one fall out of a case yet

Always make the assumption that it could be permanent. Things have changed already based on information you were provided. As others have said, get everything in writing. What their contact is, what their duties are, how they go about accessing data on the network (obviously adhering to whatever policies you have in place relevant to how people should access network material) and whether it requires any special consideration above and beyond what is granted to full-time employees (for example, whether they are allowed to take data off site, or remote access into site)... The list goes on. The clearer the content you have in writing the better it will be for you, for the school, and for your contracted staff member.

All I've done in the past is opened each one using a screwdriver and cut the platter with scissors. Relatively quick, and I can see the results. I've never had more than 10 to do in one session though...

If you use Visual Studio you can build websites in ASP(X) or HTML/CSS or PHP etc, with VB or C# coding behind if you want, then it has a Preview option to output it into a web browser installed on your computer. Can make testing what you're developing very easy. I use VS 2013 Community edition at home.

I would think that is because the SRC of the image is in the body of the email, and the email server will need to be able to see that image (where it is saved)?
