Unrelated, but possible food for thought: I've never seen people use the academic year in folder paths, so it has to be updated for every user each year when they move up. I've always seen it done with the year they started at the school e.g. intake year 2014. You can always share the folders under a different name that you change, but sticking with an absolute path for that particular student seems a better way to my eyes.

We haven't. I've left the old server on, only accessible from that VLAN, with no file shares active..... It's on my to do list 🤣 Sorry!

We have had a similar issue with Roaming Profiles when we migrated them to a new server years ago; Word had some AutoRecover records pointing to the old location, so when we switched the server off, DNS timeouts meant Word hung/crashed on loading.

Going through CE Basic/Plus right now. Not a school but the answer still applies, as we had similar query to IASME. Basically shared accounts are a fail. Even if you have a password manager used to log in to a shared account, which provides a record of who enters/accesses a password, it's a hard requirement. Therefore I doubt you'll get away with it but it may be worth enquiring with your assessor.

Most agreements contain confidentiality clauses so it's unlikely people will offer actual hard numbers. Typically such posts get a better response if you explain a bit about who you are, what your research purpose is, and what are the terms under which anything will be published (if anything)? (NB not in a school any more so I can't help anyway, sorry)

Not a school, and one office, so not really comparable to most people here. That said we've just implemented some HP Aruba 2930f switches stacked for our core, 2 x 1 GB links between each of them, which is plenty for our site. We can expand to up to 10 switches in the stack using almost any Aruba switch and they're easy to manage.

Someone here would probably chime in with something better, but I recall using HDMI over CAT5 converters that weren't all that expensive and allowed the running of HDMI at high quality over distance. Unsure if it's feasable here or at that resolution, it was a few years ago?

I've used Synologys for years and never really had an issue with them. Some of them are a pain to upgrade their memory if you want, but if you don't run a lot of programs on them, typically they're fine. Loads of programs available from the Synology store. That said, if you have to side-load anything onto there, you may find old or outdated versions e.g. Wordpress are actually underneath the Synology apps.

Ok I've just deleted the whole team and created a new Organisation Wide one (and Microsoft's documentation for that doesn't even match the actual process...) which has created the necessary Files and Notes tabs, I'm guessing in the Sharepoint back end.

Thanks for the suggestion - no change when I press Reload. It's never worked for this particular Team, since we started setting it up late last year. That said it's possible that years ago on our tenant, the previous admin renamed or didn't set something up, as we've had a 365 tenancy for many years but just haven't used it (we got migrated from VLSC which required some messing around from Microsoft Support to fix).

Hi everyone, Hoping I can get some clarification here, as Googling this is producing irrelevant results. I've been migrating us over to MS 365 in recent weeks, starting with Teams, then I'll do Office 365, and late this year I'll move our emails to Exchange 365. We have a default 'Everyone' team in Microsoft Teams as per the screenshot below. When I try to go to 'Files' on either the 'General' or 'Teams Feedback to IT' channels I get 'There was a problem reaching this app'. I believe this may have something to do with this Team missing something backend e.g. a Sharepoint site, but I cannot locate a way to add a Sharepoint site to an existing team (if this is even the problem). Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can point me in the right direction to resolving this. Happy to provide more info if I've missed something relevant. Cheers in advance

I've seen this before where there is a permissions issue to an admin user who logged in - every other profile was trying to access something in their AppData. It was in the Application event log on logging in with a user that didn't work. Deleting that admin user's profile resolved the issue, or granting Everyone full access over the file (I think it's a Start Menu Layout file or something). If you need me to dig out more drop me a PM and I'll take a look when I'm back in the office.

Once again I've started the Advent of Code (late), and I've managed to complete some of the challenges I'm using Visual Basic .NET because that's what I have the most experience in. That said I can't get my head around some of the answers this year and haven't had the time to look into them, or probably the skills to solve them. The puzzles are available at https://adventofcode.com/2024 and can be done in any language. Braver people than me post their solutions on the SubReddit. Nobody else there seems to be posting in Visual Basic, but in the past I've seen some heroes complete challenges in Excel both with and without VBA... Has anyone else been participating in AoC since the last post in 2017?

For us it's relatively straightforward. Some of the servers we allow to install automatically overnight, less important ones that I don't mind if they fall over. Stuff like our monitoring server, one of our Domain Controller's, or our print server. As for the others the process every weekend after Patch Tuesday is: Check backups were completed last night (more importantly, that auto verification was successful). Check for Updates on each server. Screenshot all KB numbers that are about to be installed and save image to central location. If it's not a Domain Controller or Exchange server, snapshot it on the host. Click install now and pray. Test the services on it after install. If nothing broke, remove the snapshot. I've got a full tick list along with easy tests for the services for each of these 'special servers', to pass it over to my new colleague in a few weeks' time once he's ready.
