In the past, as NB9457 has said, sometimes a Mac will read what a Windows machine won't. I'd also suggest burning Ubuntu to a DVD or bootable pen drive, then taking a look through there and seeing if you can get anything back. On the topic of Data Recovery, I've successfully used Zero Assumption Recover (Data Recovery Software, Solutions, Tutorials - ZAR Data Recovery) which I've paid for, and Recuva (https://www.piriform.com/recuva). I read a disaster recovery thread that had a checklist in it, I'll see if I can find it. Often what needs to be recovered is a good place to use when looking at what you have (as I found out when I started at my place 6 months ago - thankfully my boss has a large idea of the systems we have, but he hasn't been involved in maintaining them for several years!)

Have a look what backups are being done. Then work out what server each backup corresponds to, and work 'forwards' from there as a starting point.

Just a couple of ideas: - Some basic tips such as keyboard shortcuts for Cut, Copy, Paste, and what the difference between them is. - Printscreen versus Alt+Printscreen (useful for when staff report errors). - Solutions to common problems they might encounter - e.g. having a space at the end of their username so they can't log in. - Something a bit more fun like how to set their Outlook thumbnail photo/avatar (if you're using Exchange/AD). If you do this, remind them that it's visible only internally, and to keep it professional.

All of our students in years 7 - 11 had 4 numbers randomly selected. These were issued to them in their first IT lesson and could be changed easily if (when!) they forgot. Our sixth form got defaults of 12345 and could then change it. Most of them carried into sixth form from Year 11 so kept their old password originally but were allowed to change it. If any sixth former forgot their password it was reset to something that amused me such as 'muppet', 'rememberme' or 'imustnotforgetmypasswordorthetechnicianmaysetsomethingrude' (yes, that last one actually was used once). Staff got a default (either Password1 or 654321 or something) and could change it. We did not enforce password changes with any form of regularity. It would have created far too many headaches. We also did not enforce complexity for staff, although I did tell them that it required a capital letter and a number which meant most of them stuck a 1 at the end

I was just thinking that I've never tried thaumcraft - I'll have to give that a go. When are we looking at moving everything to our central location then, assuming no one has any objections/concerns? All of our resources are in AE2 Storage so moving our stuff won't be an issue as long as we move the reactor first!

I've got myself a 128GB Kingston SSD in my old case with my old motherboard, CPU, RAM etc. and loaded Windows Server 2012 on it (the latest legal licence I own for Windows Server). My intention is to pick up 4 2TB NAS/SAN/Datacentre level hard drives and run them in RAID 5 (I only have space in the case for this many). I'll probably configure them in RAID using Windows Server 2012 disk pool (never tried it before) then pass that storage down to a virtual machine hosted on the Hyper-V role I have installed. When I get the money to purchase those 4 HDD's, anyway.

I'd also make sure that the user you are trying to authenticate with is actually a member of Domain Users, just in case.
