  1. quote="Redbox"]..........knows her way around computers (can build one from scratch) I'm afraid that you would be expected to know considerably more than this to get a tech job in education starting at 14K! Some networking knowledge would also be required I would have thought. Suggest you look at the BECTA spec for IT technicians at linky for some further info on this. The idea of studying while doing supply work makes sense if you are determined. It can be done however, I spent 20 years as a teacher before moving into this field, though I did have an advantage I suppose in that I had worked with computers previous to teaching, and my degree was maths and computer science. Best of luck if you do decide to go down this route.

  9. Just been advised that due to a baggage-handlers dispute in France, this has been postponed to Friday 18th. This is also the "UberGeeks Weekend" at the Bull in Sedbergh so anyone who is in the area is welcome to join us for some real ale and subnet calculating. If you want a useful lexicon try: linky

  11. but if you wear posh suits that involves more IRONING !!!!!! 8O 8O 8O
  12. This was caused by windows update!! The affected DLLs were a part of the last "Patch Tuesday" fix for an animated cursor problem that let black hats run code remotely. see: another MS cock-up
  13. Apparently 8O UV markings etc can be cleaned off with common household chemicals. With Smartwater even a few remaining molecules will identify the real owner of the item and the liquid soaks into tiny crevices.
  14. Smartwater
  15. Yep, we use it here and I would recommend it highly. Only problem really is that it cannot be removed once applied which can create an issue with warrantees. There again, it wouldn't be much use if it could be removed!!! Quick and easy to apply. Our local police love it, as do the insurance company. I would advise that you buy plenty of extra stickers and warning posters. It's surprising how quickly you use them up!

  18. will the site then have a 2K problem???
  19. Nope, cannot ping etc. but it's possible the IP address has been changed. I cannot check that since the test button on the back that gives you the settings printout gives the "chosen personality not available" response! djm968 .......... saw that on google but it refers to driver problem as solution. gecko ......... cannot update as I cannot access the jetdirect box. Download manager cannot find it, I cannot even ping it at it's last known IP address. Think a new one is looking more and more likely!
  20. HP Colour laserjet 3550 with HP jetdirect en3700. Has worked fine(ish) for years. No workstations now able to print to it. I tried to run setup again on the server but setup program unable to find printer now. Tried to print out settings from jetdirect but printer reports "chosen personality not available". Printer works fine when connected directly to a workstation so not a driver problem which is the only googled solution I could find. I suspect jetdirect box is knackered but at a replacement cost approaching £200 want to be sure. Anyone any blazing insights??
