Doesn't the use of VLEs etc make pupil email essential if they are to make full use of them? The inappropriate use of email is a classroom control issue. Should we ban the use of pencils and paper because the little darlings sometimes send written notes to each other?

Working from home also raises other issues. I have staff who have stated they will refuse to use the remote access facility unless the school pays for a broadband connection for them. In many ways this is quite a reasonable attitude IMHO, especially as some live in places where broadband over copper isn't available so would require a satellite link.

"...... Staff members may use the school’s laptops for limited personal purposes ...." but be aware that if used for personal purposes it then becomes a taxable perk and must be declared to the IR !!!!

Temporary block on network login
SteveT replied to CESIL's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Unplug the network cable? Is it a hot-plug drive? If so you shouldn't need to stop log-ons as they won't work anyway until the array is reconstructed. If not hot-plug the machine will be switched off anyway!! -
Alternatively businesses could put their money where their mouths are and provide the training their workers need (anyone here old enough to remember apprentices???) and leave schools to their role which is to "educate" their students. Computers in schools are a tool to enhance teaching and learning, they are not here to enable students to be trained for industry. A bit harsh maybe, but I get a bit fed up of schools being expected to do everyone elses work for them!!! a) Parents lack the skills to raise children with some sort of moral code? No problem ........... schools will be made responsible. b) Police/judicial system unable to stop kids carrying/using knives? No problem ........... schools will be able to fit metal detectors. c) Feral and drunk kids wandering our streets? No problem ........... schools will be made responsible for teaching them the dangers of alcohol. d) Parents unable/unwilling to care for their kids outside school times? No problem ........... extended schools, homework clubs. e) Parents unwilling to feed their kids properly? No problem ........... schools will be made responsible for this. Schools providing breakfast for kids FFS!!!! Rant over!!!

..... with a severance payment in the region of £2,000,000!!!! Let's see, if I cock up the network by selecting completely the wrong hardware and then connecting it in a non-standard way that seems to have no discernable rationale; on a day when Ofsted are in; and introduce a new OS without any knowledge of it's ability to work with the existing setup; etc etc ...................................I wonder if I'll get a load of dosh??? Or will I just be out on my arris!!! :? :? :?

[quote name=" The problem ive always had with that theory is in order to do 30 and not 1mph over you have to be paying more attention to the speedo than the road. Personally id rather see the kid stepping out and brake, missing the child completely, or atleast slowing to 10-15mph, than plough straight into him at exactly 30mph. Sorry, but i think this is a load of bollards!!! A speed limit of 30mph doesn't mean that you have to drive at exactly 30mph but that you are not to drive over that speed! If you cannot drive at under 30mph without constantly watching your speedometer then you shouldn't be driving IMHO. If a driver hit one of my kids at 35mph and killed them and came out with that excuse I would want the book thrown at them. The research on the effects of speed on impact with pedestrians is very clear! As far as I'm concerned being "just over the speed limit by 10%" is the same as being "just over" the drink/drive limit!

A level results out and my eldest lad did well so getting rid of him to Uni. in September!!! (Music Technology at Leeds). Unfortunately my eldest girl has now finished at Oxford (yes I know, ......... a swot!!) so is back home. You get rid of one and another returns, and they seem to do nothing but eat me out of house and home!!

Nope, the only dept that is really hated in school is PE!!!! 1. Half the kids turn up late for a lesson, dishevelled, muddy and as high as kites. They've just had PE!!!! 2. Half the kids don't turn up at all. They have a football match that the PE dept "forgot" to tell people about!!!! 3. The PE dept remember to tell people about the match. Teachers plan special lessons to deal with the smaller part-groups they will be getting ..... book them into small ICT suites etc. 1 hour before lesson it starts to rain so match cancelled etc. ........ chaos!!! So I thank God I'm not a PE teacher!!!!
