Rowntree Foundation - Educational IT Professionals' salaries
SteveT replied to mortstar's topic in General Chat
Again ........ The report is on what people consider to be necessary incomes. Housing costs were specifically excluded since they vary too much according to individual circumstances. If you actually read the report you will see that they asked a sample of the population what they considered to be essential for modern living. The results give a snapshot of what people in the UK consider essential, not what the investigators thought essential!!!! Yet another case proving the need to read content rather than relying on media headlines!!! -

Rowntree Foundation - Educational IT Professionals' salaries
SteveT replied to mortstar's topic in General Chat
!. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is one of the biggest charitable research organisations in the country and concentrates on social research. Spends over £10 million a year on this. While Rowntrees is a sweet manufacturer, Joseph Rowntree was a Quaker so put the money he made to "good works". 2. If you actually read the paper, it doesn't say these are the amounts needed to live on, but that these are the amounts people claim they need, a very different thing. Furthermore, they are significantly higher than the amounts the government claims are required!!! -

I refer the honourable Gentleman to his own post dated 18.04.2008 Are you in a teachers union Simcfc73? If not then that teacher is wrong, if you are, you will likely be breaching your unions rules if you covered her lessons. Breaching the unions industrial action rules is normally referred to as being a scab, so yes she may be right to call you that. Taken completely out of context of course!!!! :p:p

The relationship between local government wages and inflation is contentious at best. There are economists that would argue that only wages involved in the production of goods could possibly drive inflation indeed there are those who deny any connection between wages and inflation. See Safe Haven | Inflation and Wages -- Another Dangerous Economic Fallacy or Why wages are not an inflationary danger One economic theory would contend that inflation is actually a tool used by governments and capital holders to increase their own wealth!!!
-
I take it that those who "disagree" with industrial action will refuse to accept any pay rise resulting from such action and return the money to the government? This, of course, would particularly apply to those who are members of the relevant unions and appear happy to accept the benefits their fellow members gain for them but then scab as soon as they are called to fulfil their part!!! If you feel so strongly that the students will suffer significant damage to their education by missing a couple of days from school I suggest you speak to their parents who take them away on holiday during the school term or Heads who allow their schools to be used as Polling Centres during elections!!!! Perhaps you could volunteer to lose some of your holidays to make up for such a significant loss!!! Note: Senior Officers in Local Authorities haven't shown any regard for restraint!! Last figures I had show wage increases of between 5.7% and 7%. 7% of £50,000+ is much more significant that 50p per hour extra which is what many LA workers would gain even if the Unions win outright!!!! Remember: 1. The claim is for 6% or 50p per hour whichever is the higher. 2. Public sector wages have been depressed for several years to "avoid fuelling inflation". 3. Private sector wage rises are averaging at 4%!!! 4. Inflation is running at 4%. Basic foods, heating etc are rising at an even higher rate. 5. The government want to restrict us to 2% for the next 3 years!!! Local and national politicians haven't shown any regard for restraint, indeed they still have their noses firmly stuck in the trough!!!!
-
14% hey. I don't begrudge them but let no-one dare complain when the public sector unions decide enough is enough and take action to improve the wages of the lowest paid in our society! Stand by for disruption in the health service, education, local authorities etc. Will make the awkwardness of a few garages running short of fuel seem minor!!! Schools closed, hospitals emergency only, no bins emptied etc...... One thing that no-one seems to have answered. The drivers aren't employed by Shell but by a transport company contracted to Shell. The strikers didn't picket the offices of this company but the actual refineries. I thought that secondary picketing was illegal, I seem to remember the police and courts taking very robust action against strikers engaged in this in the past! Perhaps the police/CPS/government could explain to the miners, dockworkers, steelworkers etc who were imprisoned for secondary picketing why the same action isn`t to be taken against anyone from the road transport industry!!! I also suspect that if I caused disruption on motorways etc as a protest (Haulage Companies protesting about fuel prices) I would get my collar felt very quickly. Double standards, surely not!!!!

Sorry, I've tried to resist but......... :D:D FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of risotto. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: Nothing like a good glass of Château de Chasselas, eh, Josiah? THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: You're right there, Obadiah. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Who'd have thought thirty year ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking Château de Chasselas, eh? FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: In them days we was glad to have the price of a cup o' tea. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: A cup o' cold tea. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Without milk or sugar. THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: Or tea. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: In a cracked cup, an' all. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth. THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: Because we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son". FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Aye, 'e was right. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: Aye, 'e was. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: I was happier then and I had nothin'. We used to live in this tiny old house with great big holes in the roof. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling. THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: Eh, you were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in t' corridor! FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: Oh, we used to dream of livin' in a corridor! Would ha' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House? Huh. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Well, when I say 'house' it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: We were evicted from our 'ole in the ground; we 'ad to go and live in a lake. THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t' shoebox in t' middle o' road. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: Cardboard box? THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: Aye. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt. SECOND YORKSHIREMAN: Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky! THIRD YORKSHIREMAN: Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife. FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN: Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah. FIRST YORKSHIREMAN: And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you. ALL: They won't!

Let's see: Kent still has Grammar schools. So, you cream off the highest achievers and supportive parents to the Grammar Schools then complain that the rest aren't doing so well!!!! Now, there's a surprise! Other areas have schools with large numbers of pupils with special needs or no English when they arrive at 14 years. Major cities like Birmingham and Manchester. They don't do as well either. Another surprise! In my own county the list includes schools that were earmarked for closure anyway so do you think this might have effected their results? Hmmmm. I also note that this isn't new money but is being diverted from elsewhere in the budget. WTF does the 30% come from? Has there been any research to enable anyone to say this is a reasonable target? The cynicism of this Government is incredible.

On my wedding night we were in the honeymoon suite and as I was undressing for bed, I tossed my trousers to my new bride and said: "Here, put these on." She put them on and the waist was twice the size of her body. "I can't wear your trousers," she said. "That's right,'' said I, "and don't you ever forget it. I'm the one who wears the trousers in this relationship." With that she flipped me her knickers and said: "Try these on." I tried them on and found I could only get them on as far as my kneecaps. "Hell," I said.''I can't get into your knickers!" She replied: "That's right... and that's the way it is going to stay until your attitude changes." The old 'uns are the best!!!

For those of you who don't know, Walney Island is near Barrow. Used to be joined but the marras dug a big trench to separate them. Next step is to tow it out to sea and scuttle it!! :D:D
