Can't you put the command unclutter -idle 3 -root in to run when the machine logs in? I used Lubuntu Linux since it's a little lighter and put this command in the Default applications for LXSession under the Autostart tab. There should be something of equivalence in full Ubuntu though.

I would use Group Policy Preferences, far easier in my book. Should be able to set associations in Control Panel Settings -> Folder Options.

IIRC, it was this one... User Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Prevent users from customizing their Start Screen

Generally we disable right click on the start menu. It *might* work if you delete the following key owned by SYSTEM. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Launcher.AllAppsDesktopApplication\Shell\OpenFileLocation ...but it might not... either way, I would try it out on a test PC. If it does work, this would most likely disable the ability for all users.

We've used WPKG and SCCM to deploy the program in the past. Both work with batch/command files, so make deployment easier.

I would say this should fall under common curtesy and common sense... if that doesn't work could always put a present on their desk of some brand new, boxed ratty old headphones.

For a home user that may be the case... now if you think about something as big a a school we need at least 1 switch that require VLANs and possibly Layer 3 routing, at least 1 WAP that need to support VLANs (if they are only going to be doing this from once specific area), etc... As for teaching KS2 curriculum, I don't remember where it says 'let the kids click links in e-mails from an untrusted source'.

1) There was only one person that said that, and others said the behaviour was akin to childish. I for one agree. 2) The people that are going to be responding to your FOI would in the vast majority of cases not even think about that, they wouldn't have the technical know how to know that was a hindrance to someone. 3) A file attachment can at least be scanned before loading and if it had a macro would not be enabled by default, the person will be asked.

Well... I guess at least you didn't spend £11,200.00 on 2nd Class postage stamps...
