Some of the graphics were ok but much of the story was naff. They had been here so many years and yet in some scenes we were still disecting them on the table like it was something new? Still had no idea how any of their tech worked? Come on! Sending army guys to reason door to door with aliens that kick your arms off and behave like rabid dogs? nah! How come they came here but none of em knew how to work their ship for 20 years? How come they were all so damned stupid eating from trash like feral dogs? Building bunkers under their shacks? Liek the FBI would not have had every building bugged and CCTV'd 24/7. Could do better!

£200 quid for a computer? I would never pay more than 50 quid! Joking of course. I would build one myself if i were you but sometimes with a tight budget you are better off buying a base unit off the shelf. Try Aria or Novatech if funds are tight. Try their bare bones systems and just add a couple bits and there you go. If you have a few hard drives or cds lying around it will save more.

You can get a nice car and not spend the thousands and thousands. I have a nice little car. Could get a few bits to flash it up (tints, colour seats, alloys etc) for a small amount if i really was into that but prefer it as it is. If you car is your hobby then by all means spend away. My tech spends loads on his £1200 106 with performance filters, performance exhaust, tinting, new central locking and more. He loves his car and washes it like 4 times a week. Fair play, it looks fantastic. Did not have to cost a bomb though. The parts ain't that much either. I think cars are so overpriced. My sister just came back from Oz and bought a black Tigra with 19k miles on the clock for £1600. Looks great and mechanic says its in great shape too. Paying 10k or more on a car just does not register in my mind as sane! Not knocking those that see otherwise, just saying how i personally see it. I do want a nice house but i think again there are nice houses that cost a ridiculous amount of money and those that cost much less for the same. Different parts of the country. I hope to move to northants because my own county will charge stupid prices like 180k for a 2 bed shoebox to live in whereas 40 mins drive and i could get a 3 bed semi with a garage and 30-40k at least back in my pocket for that. Must take a long time to save up 10k and then its gone on a car which will then be worth only 3-4k 5 minutes later meaning a huge loss if you tried to sell it on again.

Would never pay more than a couple grand for a car ever. Paid 900 quid for my current car only 45k miles on the clock and lasted the last 2 years with no problems. Why pay more for something that just drives you from A to B. If it was a bit more money for a safer car because of long journeys or something i could agree. When i see people spend 10k upwards it makes me laugh.

Why don't you all just put a name in the back window on a bit of paper? It's not like the person driving behind you is going to think "Mama! Look! Wow hes ace look at that number plate!! I wanna be just like him!!". They will probably think you are some moron boy racer wannabe. Why not sew on some text on all of the back of your work shirts or jumpers? Bet half of you who have these don't even wash the car often. Saddddddddd!

Maybe the original poster meant for future prospects outside the Educational environment. It's ok to say we will skill up if we need it, but what happens when the papers and jobsites that advertise network admin jobs require voip virtualisation, vlan knowledge etc on a larger scale and you just do not get to touch that stuff at work. You may get stuck in your job never to progress without a lot of personal time spent building servers at home when you could be spending time with family and enjoying time away from work. The talk on these forums sometimes frightens me. I think "damn, are they all using ESX or VMware servers and 2008R2??" and theres me on lonely 2003 with no plans to upgrade for a good while!! Personally i find many jobs require in depth knowledge of firewalls and other things i really don't play with much at work. This is one of the reasons i have been banging on with the MCSE after years of not bothering and made myself do the boring ITIL at the start of the year. I am sure i could go into another school and it would be a doddle. Have worked in a few. Many industry jobs though have a more frightening look to them with expectations. Certainly when they require MCSE/CCNA for silly helpdesk roles quoted at 15k a year. What chance getting something mid 20k upwards then outside school? Good jobs seem rare.

Unless you work with Cisco kit i doubt a CCNA is going to do you much good. Unless an employer takes on CCNA's with absolutely no experience working with the kit out in the field. If you had an MCSE and had never used a server outside your training you would be more of a liability than a use. Not really useful if you are looking for work and can't get the experience i know.

There are dream jobs and there are reality jobs that you might "actually" do. I would like to be a rock star, a writer, an actor etc.. More likely within a few years (if not still in IT) will probably be doing electrical work with my brother perhaps starting our own small business.

You should check out certforums.co.uk they have a wealth of info on all the certs. Plenty of Edugeekers post there too about certs.

Got a NVidia GTX 285 Black Edition and it sends my computer into outer space. Was pricey though when i bought it. Before that i had a XFX 8800GT which was good but not going to handle a 28 inch monitor on the highest resolutions at full settings. Also bought a XFX ATI 4870 which was a lot cheaper and not a massive difference even on a big screen with Fallout 3 set to the highest settings. I expect the best bargains will be the ATI stuff at around £70-80 quid.

Have spent nearly 2 hours to dell the past. Luckily HP kit has not failed as much so not really rang them hardly. It's good to listen to some Sinatra and ignore the teachers ranting at the door for a while. Just remember to have an imaginary conversation when they barge in and usually after 10 minutes of sulking they leave It's a shame the voice comes on and tells you how important your call is as it breaks up the music.

I was liking the cabling too looking at it in envy!

Just had all the old unmanaged netgear rubbish replaced with Trapeze and the radius ringmaster software etc... So far so good, all the staff and student laptops that have been back have picked up the settings and work without any configuration. Will know how they cope with many users in a few days. Not sure about the round access points that are in the corridors though, they look like frisbys and i can imagine kids pulling them down. Anyone else have anything to protect them? A cage that does not block the signal?

Got mine yesterday and also got the case with built in light which looks brilliant. So happy i did not choose the newer version as i could not imagine tapping the screen and smudging it. Sooooo easy to use the little buttons to turn pages and a hell of a lot more responsive and fast to switch pages and menus than i thought after reading lots of posts about how slow they are. On Windows 7 i just copy and paste across the books to the device and they work without any annoying software like the annoying itunes. The only software i have tried to transfer books is the free calibre which will let you convert to epub and transfer across if you prefer it. Another nice bit of software is Stanza Desktop which is also free. This lets you convert loads of types of files such as rtf, pdf, lit, epub. doc etc.... With Sony converting all of its library to the epub format i have converted mine to that also as it is an open format i believe. I did try a pdf file i downloaded yonks ago of a technical manual i owned as a real book. Did not work on the reader when i converted it to epub as apparently the file was too long and did not have proper spacing paragraphs etc although it looked ok to me. I found that if i saved it to epub format then renamed it to zip, then converted it from zip to epub again using calibre, it then worked once transferred across to the device. Apparently calibre formats it properly. Moral of the story is to buy your books and they will look much better than those downloaded! It is a shame though that the books i like are as expensive or more than the real versions especially as i have them all in hard format already!

A job is a job though and until something else comes along it is always best to make do and get on with things. -State the current aspirations in your work area and comment on progress. Are there any particular things you are working on at the moment? Any projects you would like to start or are doing at the min? A FOG server? NAGIOS, Open source Digital display? Surely something excites you to get stuck into? Perhaps you would like to work with teachers and staff to develop resources? Perhaps you would like to get much more into training staff and students on how to best use ICT? ITIL? FITS? Sorting policies?Is everything documented? Network labelling? -What do you consider to be your training needs for the next period? Do you want or have you got an MCSA/MCSE or similar? Cisco Certs? ITIL? Anything interest you like server 2008 training or maybe some virtualisation training? What is the academy technology being used and do you have the full knowledge of each product? -Do you have any skills or talents that are not being used to the full in your present job? Mention fitness training or classes you could run alongside your current job? Worth a try. Tell them you want to improve staff fitness and perception that IT is a lazy subject -How could you make more contribution in your current work area? Perhaps go on the offensive if you are still stuck in a small room and state you could make a much larger contribution if you were given a seperate office to work more effectively or even the whole team with a window as it has affected morale. Better morale means better productivity. -Is there any particular career or type of job within the Academy you would like to pursue if given the opportunity? Only you will know this one i guess but just think of what excites you and when you were last excited about work and you will have an idea. I saw in your other post you were excited that this position might have let you design the network etc.. Perhaps mention you would like to project manage such changes and save the academy money. Hope i have made sense and not made a balls up:D

Just bought the PRS 505 from play.com for 169 which includes the tri fold case and free delivery. Also purchased one of those cases with a light panel that swivels across the screen for night reading from Amazon for about 30 quid. Just could not resist any more. Have been dying for one of these for soooooooo long. This thread just made me get one. Was holding back for ages because i had seen the PRS 700 was newer and not available in the UK but that seems to be discontinued now with the new touchscreen 600 out soon. The reason i got the 505 is because i saw some videos of the image quality on the new 600 version and was very disapointed compared to the 505 which does not have a touchscreen (not really vital to me). The 505 also seems a bargain at 169. Here is a video of the 2 side by side. I read more forums and reviews and everyone seems to agree the new version has a poor image. Video: Sony PRS-600 Touch is fast but too dim to satisfy PRS-505 owner Oh and i forgot to say, did not really consider the smaller 5 inch prs 300 because i saw a video of all 3 and it looked too small with the text on screen. Much prefer the larger 6 inch display of the 505.

Love theme hospital by Bullfrog i think it was. Not really so keen on the newer flashy version that came out after it. Loved making the rooms and decorating them. I wonder if i could find a copy of powermonger and populous, now they were real games!!

We have those machines with the blue fronts and ours are pretty old and outdated but still boot from USB floppy or USB HDD i think. We use the NETAC memory sticks that RM used to sell. We just move the slider to emulate a USB Floppy. This is on CC3 though if that makes a difference.

Bet you don't really need or use half of it. Visit Filehippo, update using freeware or open source from the site and then whack a few other apps on and you are done!!! They even have a updater to remind you of new versions. I used to back everything up and it would take yonks to reinstall, now i just install stuff as and when i need it from software backups on an external disk. Even firefox profiles were a pain. Now i just slimmed down to xmarks for all my browser faves and adblock. Makes things simpler. Games are all run from a second non OS hard disk as are all data, music and video. Very impressed with Windows 7 myself so far.

I have a technet plus account and was wondering how many of my machines i could try Windows 7 on? I don't want to try it on a older machine i have if i run out of keys and can't try it on my main machine. I need to clonezilla that first so i don't lose anything. Wouldn't mind seeing how fast it runs on a laptop either if the keys allow.
