  1. AB Tutor Control - classroom management software for schools iTALC - Free open Source i believe. Lanview was great also and we still use it but i believe it is now closed. Someone may be able to get you a copy from the forum but it is mainly used for techies to monitor the machines on the network. If you want this for teachers then a commercial package or ITALC might be your best bet.
  2. I hate laptops and all our staff use them (students also use 6 trolleys of laptops ). I could not ever see us moving to a computer in each classroom. Staff gather regularly in offices and meeting rooms to work on things and even the main hall regularly for training and Sims events and all bring their laptops along. Without them it would be a nightmare and staff would be scribbling everything in diaries or worse yet PDA's which rank even higher on my list of hated devices i have to support. Laptops are here to stay for staff but i am working hard to remove their use for students as they are just being trashed to hell and back and i feel like joining them there.
  3. Excluding toners which are looked after under a contract with a company, we have been given 5k this year. We are a secondary school with around 1000 students. This will need to be used to buy projector bulbs for 50+ projectors and repairs (lots of vandalism) and replacements for chargers, AC adapters and all other computer and laptop repairs and maintenance. Anyone else think this is too harsh? We have £1800 quid left till April since replacing bulbs and repairing things that were overdue in April. It would be nice to know what budget some of you get purely for repairs and maintenance, a general techy type budget that excludes things such as broadband and full new computer suites.
  4. If they do take these laptops out of school i would whack on Truecrypt full hard disk encryption to ensure that any sensitive data is not lost if they save it on the laptop and take it off site.
  5. Dartfish here although i get the impression it is hardly used.
  6. Glad you got a good deal. I come to Edugeek to escape the salesmen so am glad mine are not on here
  7. If this woman wrote all her non computer troubles down and sent them to me I would have asked for her to be sectioned. She clearly needs help.
  8. We just enabled it on (hp procurve) switches as and when over a week or so until it was all done due to being so busy. Should not cause any problems i would think doing it in any order really.
  9. Post some pics when its done, good luck
  10. Battlefield Heroes has launched quietly and they appear to have two sites. One does not have the play now button. Free game, just need to register with EA which takes a minute or so. The game is only a couple hundred mb perhaps as it seemed to download fast on my 2mb line at home. Great fun for those that have not played and free too. 11. I have noticed in the UK over the last week or so that the site is crawling at a slow pace when other pages load fast. Tried it through a few other proxies with no increase and as other sites are fast i have to assume it is just this one. Even had a few time out errors today. Posts today have sometimes been taking a minute or two to appear.
  12. Perhaps try swapping each possible component with another working laptop and then perhaps even the working motherboard into the faulty casing. Perhaps it could be something like the case pinching something.
  13. If they work when you tilt them does that not indicate that it may be something physical that is causing the problem. First thought was a dodgy hard disk causing them not to boot but then that would not stop them posting would it. Perhaps some connector is not physically pushing up properly in the innards that connects when you tilt it? Maybe take the casing off and try to prod and poke things at post to see if you can narrow the search. Maybe a CMOS battery not connected properly when not tilted? Really weird one.
  14. Dinner! Yum!
  15. Never buy a mac! Ever!
  16. We use the free version of IDoBlog which the head logs into and updates himself.
  17. Just skimmed the thread. Found this company on these forums only recently. Appears they collect all of this and more for free in the UK if you are a school or college. Have not used them yet but will once we get more stuff together. DNA I.T Recycling - Home of Free collections! - Home
  18. My vote is for tea, coffee is for wannabe Americans
  19. I agree with the above. If they were genuine about the interview and then get a letter from the LEA or an investigation because you were unhappy, guess what they are going to think when they see your name crop up anywhere else... Troublemaker! While it may be honourable to report something like this in the hope someone else does not face this problem again, it could just be that they saw something about you they did not like or perhaps realised you would not fit in well with the current staff. Who knows. I just think that for a job application, it is not worth upsetting people without real proof as the guys involved may move on and sour your name elsewhere in future because of it.
  20. Move on. It's hard to not get annoyed despite knowing how futile it is to do so. Get that out of your system for a few days and this will all be a memory. You can't change how the world is, you can only change your perception of it. Good luck with any future jobs.
  21. Found all those mags full of tripe. Paid to lie about stuff as they are keen not to upset the advertisers. Micromart all the way.
  22. I just don't think helping someone improve those particular types of questions is fair. The employer is looking for a personal answer relating to the particular candidate. To help someone with this stuff in my eyes would be cheating the employer out of a fair chance at hiring the correct candidate. If someone struggles with these questions for whatever reason then i believe that they are perhaps aiming too high or at the wrong type of job. If you rewrite someones CV because it looks a mess then i can accept that. If you help someone with cleaning up or answering these questions then i would say that is cheating and wrong.
  23. If you are applying for a job and these questions are being asked on an application form which is what i am assuming you have said, then i would say you need to answer them yourself as coming on here and asking for tips probably shows you are not suitable and would only help put someone in a position that they did not merit. I am assuming you are asking us to answer these for you from an app form. Sorry if this sounds harsh but i am only being honest.
  24. Had 3 of these kitchen brochures lately from them. Just more junk to bin. Poor trees.
  25. Does not stop the checkout people nagging me every single time if i have a damn card! Most of these things start off voluntary and then are enforced later. Or cost is imposed on those that do not. It is about getting enough people on board and then saying "hey you are the minority and as such we will need to charge anyone not using this scheme because it costs us revenue and we lose money by not be able to directly target sales to you"
