  1. Not really sure if there is a massive difference in connections when viewing standard non HD stuff to be honest. Like most things, you just want to be current and have the latest technology. I can definitely see a difference with HD content though. I was even looking at 52 inch tv's recently thinking they were damn poor in quality at curries or comet and then i saw one hooked up properly with HD connections and displaying HD footie and i could see the difference between non HD and HD side by side. I am deffo gonna be getting me a 52 inch HD tv for films and sports soon! I guess for a couple of pounds difference, why get the non HD monitor? Unless you are strapped for cash i guess or cheap like my brothers GF
  2. My bro got one a week or two ago. Be careful that you don't buy the analog one which has a slightly different product code. It just adds an "a" on the end (G2411HDA). It even mentions being HD in the descriptions on websites but only has a VGA analog connector. The HD bit refers to some HD sound connector. I only stopped my bro buying one because i checked some forum to see if it really was HD. My bro ended up getting the HD one for about £134 and another analog one later for his GF slightly cheaper as she did not need any HD stuff. Both models look exactly the same to my eyes. More expensive but definitely better is the HannsG 28 inch monitor i bought for £300 a short while ago and is down to £264 on Misco and maybe cheaper elsewhere. Soooo big and great with PC games or console.
  3. Had this and still do to a lesser extent. I use CC3 here though so i believe it is RM caused. I know though that there are other causes of this that are not RM related. On CC3 we found that if we ctrl alt del then logged off, then logged back on the problem stopped for that user 99% of the time. Also found that at he login screen if you can get to task manager you could push it through by finding the wscript.exe process i think and ending it. It is to do with the settings for their profile i think with things such as windows media player and internet explorer etc.. When we reset a profile or delete someones profile we tend to see it rear its ugly head again. Had RM work on this for us for weeks but never really solved it. Google it though because ours never went past this point even if we left it on all day and night. I saw some good posts on it on various google searches when i looked it up for us a while ago. Forgot them now though soz.
  4. If labour did their job then the BNP would not have a fraction of its membership. People are worried about the way this country is headed and i am too. Not a BNP supporter but will be interested to see what happens. Jack Straw was correct in my opinion when he expressed concerns about the use of the veil for muslim women in public. Many many of the public agreed with this. It really is quite simple though. Anyone who comes to this country should abide by the laws of this country and not try to impose their own upon it. Such as Sharia law. Whoever wants this sort of thing should go and enjoy it in parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Disgusted at the banners that were being displayed when that dutch MP came to visit. Anyone see them? Such things as Islam is superior, to hell with your freedom, Sharia law for Holland, to hell with your freedom etc.. If we want to talk about racism, we have it there. Why are illegal immigrants sitting in a european country (france) battling day after day after month after year to get in to the UK? because we are a soft touch as usual. We are scared to show our flag, ashamed of our history and bullied by the PC morons into hiring people not suitable for positions because they need a quota filled to tick boxes. This country needs to wake up. I hope the Torys keep some of their promises but i doubt it. I will be voting tory but i hope we can open a larger debate on why we harm our own country with stupidity. Looking forward to the show and as much as i do not really like NG, i bet it will be boos and childish bickering rather than intelligent answers to questions on immigration and such. Just my thoughts, take em or leave em

    Ipods in DHCP

Have tried that DLL thing linked above on the server to block certain macs. I do not want the hassle of adding everything to an allow list so i have just picked the macs from DHCP and added them to a deny using that dll and text file from that page. Restarted DHCP and i can see from the text log that the ones i specified are being denied. I hope this is actually working. Time will tell. Thanks for the linkys guys.

    Ipods in DHCP

We have a Trapeze Radius set up and we do not have a default gateway published through DHCP either. Students are not even given a guest pass for the wireless as i do not want them connecting to our system with any non school device. We have an ISA that only accepts http through our proxy servers. I doubt they are actually getting on the internet with them but perhaps they are plugging them into computers which is pulling a DHCP address from the server. I do not want loads of Ipods stealing my leases even though they will expire. It is annoying really more than an actual problem. As i said in the original post. I do not want to go static ip, was wondering if there were another solution. I will obviously look at Packetfence but at this rate i will end up with a hundred servers doing different things and no time to update and manage them all. Thanks for the replies.

    Ipods in DHCP

Not sure if this is the right forum for this q. Anyone know a method to stop students and staff connecting Ipods to the school system? I checked through DHCP addresses today and there were perhaps 30+ Ipod devices with IP addresses and now i am starting to see students personal netbooks appear too along with other mobile phone devices. I will not be able to force staff to stop students doing this as the staff are a joke and do not monitor kids in rooms or the library or the post16 area. I know of Packetfence but have never used it. Is this the only solution that is cost free? If so, do i need to add every mac address into Packetfence or are there other ways to get it to block rogue devices? Is packetfence a pain to set up and configure? I do not wish to go static IP so that is not an option with my workload and staff numbers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
  8. Congrats:ballchain:
  9. Tell em you have thick skin and can replace paper in a printer and you are a shoe in.
  10. If only the money saved through sorting out more efficient printing methods actually went back on our budgets eh? More prawn sandwiches and champagne for the management teams weekly meetings more like.
  11. Commodo is better. To be honest though i rarely use more than Windows Firewall anymore and have not had any virus reported on my Antivirus for years. Could ditch both but i have 8gb ram and a quad core so it does not hurt my performance. If you are sensible online and don't click random links in email messages to dodgy sites then you should not need to bother. Basic Windows Firewall and Router is enough for me.
  12. Used to be a good product.
  13. You could always try myp2p.eu or something such like that as they always have every premier league game available and other sports. They use specific software such as sopcast and also media player via the web for live sports. I would and do pay for my sports but i can't help it when they don't always show all the games.
  14. Never play mine anymore, only bought it for Grand Theft when it came out on XBox 360, now i just play PC because its much faster. I find console games are a bit limited and damn its hard to use a joypad to play a shootem up game. I can't get used to it compared to a mouse. Driving type games are cool for console though.
  15. Or £30 quid if you create a student email address and purchase on the website for this:D Not suggesting you try this!
  16. Sometimes the phased approach does not work. Staff may not come in during the hols to drop off laptops or may come in a few days or weeks later than agreed and you will end up with a higgledy piggledy mix of machines that have been completed and those waiting to be completed. If we dared to give the wrong laptop charger back to the wrong teacher there would be a riot! I would love to have a spare batch of loan laptops but here we are still using laptops 6 years old for some staff. Chance would be a fine thing! Sometimes you have got to rip that plaster off in one go. We sometimes take the whole 80-100 laptops in during the hols to rebuild to base image and to remove the crap that gets put on them and it takes maybe a week or so? If you have a test on each brand of laptop before you begin this process i'm sure you could iron any issues out before getting it done. Try to see things from the teachers point of view though as they will need to get work done in the hols and will appreciate it if you get things done as fast as possible.
  17. Noticed this thread and had a thought. I wear a shirt and tie to work, my techie sometimes gets away with a black t-shirt and trousers. On a recent FITS training course one thing came up was a suggestion of rebranding the IT techs image around the school by adopting a "uniform". This may alter staff perception that we are just lackeys to be lashed into obedience. Was thinking about how suitable a shirt and tie are when i get stuck up stepladders pulling projectors off the ceiling and thought a uniform of a polo neck with combats would be more suitable. I notice a lot here mentioning shirts. How many of you wear polo necks? What would go with a polo neck? Combats or normal trousers?
  18. I know people who were told their job would go permanent after so long but started as temp and they never got the job. They were not rubbish, the company kept getting different people to do the job temp>Perm and never actually hired anyone full time. I don't even consider "temp" jobs and i would not like to pay a mortgage on a "contract" job either. Too much uncertainty.
  19. Once you start a build or restore it will pick up all of the software and updates required from the location in the RM management console and automatically deploy them to the stations. Yeh it's not as fast perhaps as a clone job with it all included but once its all set how you like it you could then use RM restore to take a snapshot of each machine and a restore would take 10-15 mins maybe. Any future updates would just install automatically again after a restore and at some point you could just schedule another restore image to be created. The only reason i am making things hard for myself by using a slipstreamed CD for certain laptops and then smartclient is because i have not had the time to get all of our laptop drivers on RM to build straight off a USB stick.
  20. CC3 does not allow the renaming of computers once built. We tend to image our laptops and non RM machines to XP then run smartclient for the RM bit afterwards. This does not then work with RM restore. On the RM Ones we will just build them on RM from the start and roll out a command to create the restore images for each machine. You might want to call up RM support for some advice if you have a support contract. They will be able to tell you specifically if the RM bits will knacker what you are trying to do. I would not bother trying to ghost any machines once on RM as it seems doomed to fail. It's either the RM way using their own imaging and restoring software or the Vanilla way maybe.
  21. Great! You can guess then that it is a Smartcache that i am looking to put in I was going to ask if i could get away with doing it by myself but you have all answered this already and i kind of knew when i had to help an engineer last time. Never really paid much attention to what he was doing as he had to call for help 20 times as nothing fitted or worked the way he was expecting. I presume this will take a fair amount of time to do?
  22. Hi all Just wondering how hard it is to install a rack mounted server into a cabinet. We have a rack cabinet with a number of servers that were not installed by us. I have never actually tried to fit a rack mounted server into a server cab with all the rails and things and did not want to make a balls up if it is really awkward to do. Nothing to worry about? Any tips? Thanks
  23. Lily Allen has had a hard life with her rich upbringing and tv daddy and all her opportunities. It's hard to break into music with those sorts of contacts. She must have struggled to get a deal and work her way up from pubs and clubs till she got spotted......... yer right. Posh little cow probably never even wrote her rubbish lyrics anyway and her daddy got her the deal and the coverage she enjoys. Don't believe a word this talentless wannabe says. Saw a clip of her walking around some recent stage at a festival thinking she was ace. She looked like some 6th form wannabe hopping and skipping about and giving the old "lets hear the left side of the crowd on this bit blabla". Get a life Allen! She aint even earnt the right to be on the stage. PS. She looks ugly too, no matter how many times she slips her pancakes out (accidentally!) of her top.

    District 9

It has to have some believability or why not just make the Mr Men come running out to defeat everyone half way through. Or perhaps the aliens should have just called the transformers to help them out of the sticky situation... oh yeah that would be crap because its not believable.... I don't really care for a south africa apartheid analogy if that is what the film was about. It was pretty disgusting actually too with the blood and gore and bits growing out of people. Shame about the rubbish south africa setting. The graphics of the space ship hovering there were good though. Preferred Cloverfield to this. Also for a Sci Fi space ish type film which this was and wasnt, Sunshine was much better.

    District 9

Probably did not help much that when i watched it a few weeks ago round a friends it was on a dodgy copy with some rather dodgy subtitles. Still thought it was a bit naff and even with the subtitles a bit dodgy did it explain where the smart aliens were? Why had only the workers survived? They had this space ship in the sky and all the worlds governments had not ripped it into a million pieces to get its tech? Yeh i know it had to have DNA and stuff but it looked abandoned in the sky for years. Surely all of these things were not explained in the subtitles??
