I would take a look at FITS in respect to staffing levels of ICT in schools. Especially in regards to how they should be implemented and in what role. Perhaps someone like Grumbledook here from the forums would provide some useful information for you as he seems to be very well informed on how management and ICT should link up, having i believe been taken on by his local authority to work on such things. As well as this forum where you will get some great advice, i would suggest you contact your local schools and see if there is an organised regular support meeting for network managers and technicians to share best practice and provide more local support.

Was told i would be sacked in the past if i even tried to defend myself from physically aggressive students. Something that i would love to see them try should it ever happen. Well we are getting a new office now after my many complaints. The students from the other room (6th formers) followed us back to the noisy server room and tried to continue their fun for the last week or so. Caught them banging on the door and running off downstairs and then making animal noises at us as we came down from the office. I made sure to remember their faces this time by spending a moment or so looking at each one as they sat there swearing and i walked up and explained what i was doing calmly. They did not like this and one tried to threaten me a few times. I then fetched the SLT and had them rounded up as they all tried to bolt. Had plenty of f words thrown at me in front of the SLT etc.. I think the main guy was given a day removed from other students but not sure of any other punishments. Sad really how these kids learn that crime pays. Anyroad, i will have a new office in a few weeks, perhaps after xmas and will ensure i get a cctv camera put up outside when they do it up for me. If the governors see what the kids get up to i don't think management can ignore it like they usually do.

Contract here managed service. We are aiming to be under 500k mono and 50k colour a year if i recall correctly. 50 or so printers maybe more.

A quick question to anyone with some knowledge of DNS settings. I am running an Active Directory Integrated Zone with dynamic updates. Currently we have the DNS setting on the forward lookup zones for each DC as "nonsecure and secure". I am aware that if we changed this to "secure", then only the client that updated the host record could alter it or delete it. I assume that i could delete these records myself from within DNS as administrator if needs be but was wondering what other reasons might i want to keep this as non secure and secure? I am asking because as i understand it, only members of our AD domain would be allowed to register in DNS. Would this not be the most secure way to work? Or would this affect non Microsoft servers such as Smartcache2 on Redhat Linux and our Expresso box? I could and have added these sorts of host records and pointers myself in the past when needed. What about home laptops using our guest wireless trapeze network that are not part of AD? Would they have any issues using the smartpass guest network or would they not care at all about internal DNS servers? Just trying to gauge if i am missing something really obvious as to why RM would set it up this way. This is a CC3 server if it makes any difference. Is anyone out there with a CC3 network running secure? Any issues? I have never really considered this as a problem but if you have the opportunity to tighten and secure things without causing other issues then you should try. Any advice is appreciated. If i have been less than clear i apologise.

You sure they are not using something like portablefirefox and are getting a default gateway for it from the DHCP settings? RM won't stop that as you would probably have to remove the gateway address from the clients. Tried creating a new user and testing this out?

Rather rude reply Localzuk.... He was having a discussion, it got closed down by one mod, it appears without the other who was posting in the thread even knowing about it. That does not look very good and only annoyed him all the more because he probably felt like he was being told to shut up. Much like how you are saying it to him now in a round about way talking to him like he is a child. Everyone has an opinion and i am sure he was not personally insulting anyone. I do not see why his threads are closed/moved/edited like this. No wonder he is miffed. Happens a fair bit lately. I thought it was a public forum where you could express your opinions as long as they are well intentioned and are not aimed at insulting others. Tut tut. Perhaps some mods need a slap on the wrist too?

Test with XP see if you get the same issue.

Ok then, Come on you Spurs!!!!!!!!

I remember some naff Sheffield team mentioned and Doncaster!! Both forgettable! Oh and yeah, love Owen, although I want him back in for England he needs more games to get into his stride and I doubt he will get many with Berb and Rooney favoured. A shame because i have always been a fan and think we could lose Crouch and take Owen and Defoe to the WC. I will shut up now though as this is not really a footy thread and i am probably gonna get some flame war about footie started up

Had mods edit the odd post or two because they found certain non offensive political words or phrases offensive. I guess the "nobody is perfect" thing is true of mods too. It is frustrating when they edit things which you truly believe should stand as they were. Especially when the things they "edit" completely change the tone of the post and thus make you look bad. Every forum has problems though so i guess you have to live with it unfortunately. I think there should be a balanced view but sometimes when you rant about a company or service you should appreciate that for every upset customer there is another who may be happy. The happy customers will defend a product if they feel the complaint is not down to the product or service itself but down to some other outside source, be it lack of training, product knowledge, or as mentioned, failure to get involved and improve the product when given opportunities. Even with all of that, things will still go wrong and i would rather have someone trying to help find a solution than others just adding to the complaints without posting something that may help(not talking about general moans about teachers as there is no way to fix them but rather product complaints).

The sales side of things or how the sales/marketing people relate to the site is not really something i worry about. I guess that is for the guys who run the site to do the worrying in order to pay their bills and wages. On the other hand though, the commercial deals also add options for some who like to communicate with their suppliers through the forum. Not how i work myself but definitely works for some on here by the rave reviews about certain sales people. I think Edugeek is a success because the access to like minded technical people is freely available and would not work under a subscription based approach. The beauty of it is that people come here with no strings and can contribute or not. The site will prosper because even lurkers will pass on details to friends and colleagues. I guess i am saying there is an Edugeek from the school techies point of view and how they see it and also an Edugeek from a commercial point of view. I like the techies side myself. I do not think of it as an organisation or something that i work or belong to. To me it is a great place to read some moans and grumbles when you are feeling stressed yourself and it makes you realise you are not alone. Problems shared and all that. Strapline is good though "The educational IT professionals life line".

Best check this and block it!

I'm playing it now and will probably not be able to stop myself installing it on the school network... Help! -
A forum for techs in education. Also somewhere that the owners can sell subscriptions for others to advertise to us etc...

I had my wrist smacked too recently for a few posts but not for being a raging fanbois, more a raging nutcase I am sure that your posts were meant with the best of intentions. Although i do not manage Sims myself, i think that it does a good job here from staff feedback. Nice and easy to install too. All too often you get someone on these forums who will vent at a product and then later recant when they realise that the problem lay elsewhere. Same thing happens with RM posts and i do believe even Sophos used to be raged about in the past. Always good to have someone fight both corners though as long as too many do not get offended. I have to physically stop myself posting sometimes because i can see trouble brewing if i express my opinion on the screen

When they call for the projector problem for the 100th time (always the same simple solutions) you ask if they have tried FN F8, the source button on the remote control etc.. It never works. You must realise they are not listening to any of this. They just want you to come and do it for them!

No idea my friend although someone here may know a decent way to do this in Excel or maybe some software designed for this purpose. Sounds like something i would avoid getting roped into here as IT support. You sure this is something you should even be doing? Teacher being a bit lazy? If you really have no idea and you have no solution provided here i would just go back and be honest. Say you have no idea how to produce this for every student and it sounds like a lengthy project too. Sometimes you just can't magic that rabbit out of a hat. Knowing my luck though, someone will do just that and provide a nice easy solution!!! I do not manage the MIS here myself thank god! Oh and most important of all, Welcome!!!

If we can change daylight saving hours and whatnot, can we not just add a few more hours of light on at each end each day?

Another fan of the Creative Zen stuff here. Beats those Ipods every time! Oh and did i read somewhere that Zune is coming to the UK finally? Not that i will get one.

Never hear anyone say Gosh anymore. Do you actually say that word or is it something you just type? Just wondered when i saw it. We have lights on in here too, i hate main lights. Even at home i put a lamp on rather than a nasty main light. Feels so artificial.

I recall reading some forum post from somewhere where some expert was mentioning that copying certificates across on a particular RADIUS setup would not work. They had to be exported and then imported etc.. The problem the guy who posted had was that he copied and pasted them into the new machines store. I really do not have much experience with your problem and can see you had an issue trying to export/import but i would go back and try this again and try to overcome it. Perhaps someone else will come up with something much more useful but it just reminded me of this thread i read somewhere a while ago as i remembered thinking how i should remember how things like that are important sometimes. -
Poor guy. Not only has he got a weight problem, he must feel completely destroyed and embarassed in such a seat and then gets mocked across forums and news websites across the world after some flight attendant decides to take the picture without his knowledge. Some people eat too much but some do not. Never met a larger person like that who was not jolly and pleasant to deal with. You can see from his head height he is probably a very big guy even before the weight. I know other websites have said the pic is genuine but i would not be surprised to find out it was photoshopped for exaggeration. Cut him some slack though as he has to live inside that body and deal with the giggles and jokes at his expense i bet on a daily basis. As i say, it may not be his fault hes that big. Some people are just addicted to food too, as much as others are addicted to other things.

We have done a few laptops so far with Truecrypt on full hard disk encryption but it takes a lifetime on some laptops to do this before i can give em back to staff. The truecrypt bit took hours on one laptop that was a bit old. I would only put this on machines or laptops that would leave the school premises obviously. Most sensitive data is on the MIS and stays there. What does not is on the encrypted drive and is safe. There are some threads you should be able to pluck out with the search words "truecrypt" or "encryption" which go through how others handle encryption on hard disks and how they managed the recovery disks and such. I found it useful when i read it before trying Truecrypt myself.
