ChrisH I would just like to say a big thankyou I have just finished a 7zip silent installer and all went well. I will now try wrapping it into a msi and roll it out through GPO. I never realised how to create an answer file for install shield installs and I think you have probably helped more people on this site than just me. Thanks very much

Just to add a different approach to this subject or (maybe not) we had a company in over the summer to setup Citrix but with the package came one of their own (I think) programs called Netmanager. It seems that its just a linux box with some of their own programs running. But getting back to the disabling internet in one room we can now do that. Each room has been assigned a proxy port i.e room T8 get the proxy port 8008 room S20 gets the port 8020. this is done by way of a logon script and a look up file. As the student logs on to the machine the pc name determines the proxt port so PCs have to be name per room i.e S20-PC01, etc. we then have a web interface that can block or unblock a particular port we have given teachers access to this now they are able to turn the internet off and on as they want. I am not very good with linux but I'm sure the principle of this would be quite simple for some one who understands Linux. If someone wants to try to replicate this and I would imagine that most of it is already built into squid, I am quite happy to work with them and maybe develope a tool for the whole community.

ChrisH I sat down this afternoon and tried your method but have still got something wrong. I downloaded Windows Installer Wrapper Wizard and used it to wrap the exe's with the silent switch /r that didn't work so I looked around the web and on appdeploy I found the switch /s/sms that didn't work. Now I know i am missing something very simple but for the life of me I can't see what to do. Or are you using 7zip to zip the exe's and then wrapping them? with the /r switch :?

Could you possible let me have more details on how you managed it. From what I understand 1st you created seperate MSIs for each application (I will be using WINinstall for this is that ok) as when I try to creat a MSI with WINinstall I don't seem to end up with a single msi I have a couple extras directories a reg file normaly is there a final step I'm missing? 2nd you are creating a reg import which you are deploying through a MSI wrapper (Ric do you have any details) 3rd running flash as admin for some first run files (this could present a problem all student have individual profiles.... maybe time for a rethink) I too am using RIS and have got a image that install to 98% of my machines now just got an Nvidia NIC problem on the last PCs but that will be another post sometime

Yes I agree this is a great idea. I am fighting with Marcomedia Suite MX Educational version at the moment trying to achieve a silent install and I would love it to be from GPO. Anyone one have any success with this I have searched the web and tried a couple different ways but as yet I have had no luck. If you have done it PLEASE show me the way

I think i would like to give it a try on some machine and see how it goes

Thats really helpful pete all three of my PCs have two IPs (this is the way they were set up before I got here) so maybe there is some mileage in this fix. I signed up to the Capita Supportnet site just before I came home from work tonight. I will try these and post the results thanks

Ric its a Certified Information Systems Security Professional it seems to be quite in depth but it is on the "most wanted" list for Australia and as I'm hopping to emergrate it can't hurt for me to have this one. Yes the installation of FMS is on the Sims server

@pete yes the SQLAnywhere database is on the main sims server @plexer I have turned the firewall off completly and still get the problem as to ODBC how can I check the setup?

We only use FMS on 3 machine in the admin offices, the database is running and the XP firewall has been opened and still we get the error

I have been having a problem with FMS for quite some time now and I was hoping that the new update would end this error but it hasn't, It seems to happen when we have two users on FMS and surley it should cope with that? Here is a scrren shot of the error just incase someone has seen it and know a fix, (our local sims support have been looking into this for a couple of months now and still have not come back with any real solution <!--url{0}-->
