Hi all, I've been asked by a teacher to recommend some software she can use to teach her class about database forking. I'm aware there are various open source offerings out there such as SQL, etc., but I'm a bit concerned that this may be a little complex. Can anyone suggest anything fairly simple (and, surprisingly, preferably free) that I can have a look at? Thanks.

Saw this today and thought some of you big boys and girls might want to give some input to the team as I know some of you have issues in running this program in a secure domain enviroment. Scratch Forums / Seeking opinions: Which folder do you want Scratch to save to? regards Simon

...welcome. I am looking for something like APEX Learning Systems but not APEX because I need more of a general remediation program that focuses on reading, math, math computations, language mechanics. I am considering Skills Tutor but am unfamiliar with the program. Again, any insight is welcome. Thanks!

Hi EduGeeks! I work for OSS Watch, a Jisc-funded service providing unbiased advice and support for open source in UK education. We're currently working on a document called "Open Source Options for Education", which we're creating to complement the UK Cabinet Office's own "Open Source Options" document, with much the same aims outlined in that document's introduction. The real difference is that we're looking specifically at software that's relevant to educational establishments (i.e. not general purpose OSes, network tools, office software etc). My reason for posting this here is that we'd like to open up the document for comment and contributions before we create the publish the final draft on our website. You can view and edit the document in it's current state at http://oss.ly/osoed or https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Fh7z6Oz4tBK5yvhjdf3UIRjmhJZrO5SJFFIUngLRaF4/edit (Not shortened) I you feel you've got something valuable to add in the form of software we've missed or good examples of real world usage, please do so. If you've got any general comments and observations, you can add them in the document's comments or in this thread.

We all know how much a lot of Educational software basically sucks. Whether it be getting the program to install or using a certain feature of it. Information is also scattered to the four corners of the internet as well and can be time consuming to track down the relevant information after getting no joy from a companies website or technical support helpline. So..... Lets us share our knowledge and experience of this awkward collection of substandard code and save people 3 hours they dont have to get that certain piece of software working. As well as certain installation issues this section should contain information on any tips and tricks that may be needed when converting these installers to MSI format or alternative methods used when MSI packages just cant be created with packages like Studio 2004 for example. So please share with us any of your notes you have on installations or your recent experience with certain packages so we can start to build up a decent knowledge base for the Edugeek Community. http://www.edugeek.net/wiki/index.php/Educational_Software_Knowledgebase Cheers Chris
