  1. Looks like I'm doing it myself
  2. plexer how much do you charge the wife has plans for me to do the same in two weeks. As for school work I sat around drank some coffee... drank some more then realised I'm only here another 1 and a half weeks I'm looking at our group policies at the moment I think ours are very untidy and so I plan to re do them too, have you got any hard rules that you always work by. I'm also looking at implementing censor.net looks good from what I have seen of it.
  3. I am just running it now ....... wow what a program, can't outside of my network yet though
  4. I would assume the large proportion of us on EduGeek use group policies for rolling out our applications, and there must be a large amount of MSI's created for free programs, i.e Adobe Acrobat reader. I thought it would be great if we could have a MSI repository where members could upload the MSI's they have created and want to share, obviously this would have to be well policed to make sure no illegle software appeared, and maybe have members who would test the MSI's before they went to public release. Just an idea
  5. I agree I think I will be looking into this at a later date
  6. That does sound good! there are a couple of Network Managers and Technicians that meet up every couple of months at the moment, but to be honest there is no real direction, this could be the perfect answer. I can't speak for any of them now until September but I'm sure they would be interested. And as for the October conferance I will try to get to that
  7. Hi this looks to be really great event I would love to go but we are doing major work here so not a chance. Will there be any more in the future? Also are they always in Reading or are they held in other parts of the country? Maybe you could organise something in Devon or Cornwall ....our tractors won't get as far as Reading
  8. Well done mark! sorry to cause you work in the holidays
  9. I'll vote for CPC never had a problem with them
  10. I have just spent the last two hours or so looking at a program called Sys Aid. I have to say it is the one I am going to use Dos_Box originally mention a while ago. Its great not only do it have a help desk that looks very simple for the user, (and gives the user the option to send a screenprint) but it looks to be very configurable too, PLUS it will do an inventory of your network machines and you can add other items manually. If a machine has had work done to it the help desk and the inventory link so that you can see what been to to which ever machine. And you can use the same interface to remotely accces clients. As Dos_Box said originally you can have only 2 Admins and 100 users but I'm sure there are alot of us that would fall into that catagory. Sys Aid get my vote
  11. Its ok Dos_Box I found it Its called SYS Aid, I seem to remember that it was just what I wanted. For anyone else its here I'll take a look at yours too Budgester
  12. Dos_Box I was looking over previous posts and I found you post I did download that and try it briefly but with other things i removed it thinking i would look later but it seems to have gone can you remember what it was called I seem to remember that it looked perfect for what I wanted.
  13. I know this has been talked about a few times here but I want a final answer as there are lots of differing ideas I'm looking at One-Zero at the moment but is it the best for both or is there a better product? It has to be simple for the end user, as you all know they don't want to learn to much new stuff oh and the most important thing It must be FREE we have less than 50 teachers here so any limited user liciences may be ok Maybe once we have some suggestions one of the Mods could creat a poll so we could see at a glance what is prefered (only an idea)
  14. No but thanks anyway, wierd we seem to have most answers right here among ourselves, but then I guess it figures because we are always in the firing line Edit I forgot to mention Nlite I have been playing with it but while I was having problems with AutoImage I went down to the basics and then built back up, I am happy (to a point ) with some of the scripts, need to play more though, the driver packs work for me, and the installers so far have worked. Nlite will be the next one, it just takes so much time though :x Once again thanks for your reply over at msfn
  15. I will take a look at that one too since I have GPS set up this could prove to be very educational
  16. I was playing with this today, I had forgotten all about it, but it is a really great little toy for your PDA. I used it will I was in Indonesia earlier this year to send and recieve my emails. Whats more you will be amazed at how many people leave their wi-fi connections wide open. I set my pda up in its cradle in my car on the way home from work tonight and i must have found least 10 wireless networks that were wide open. Hitchhiker
  17. That seems to have worked although I was up till 4 this morning playing around with the install. The only thing that is not as i want it is the Location under Regionaland Language options it still is US
  18. Ok I will try that..... sort of got ahead of myself though and I'm just rebuilding the image too, shoul know in a couple of hours
  19. Error one still happens I edited the sif file and rerun the RIS install but I got the same error...... Would I have to stop and restart BINL if I edit the sif file?
  20. ChrisH That could be the perfect answer I will try that thanks eejit I will try that I really hope its something that simple  ITWombat I didn't use setup manager so that looks like it my problem there I've looked into this and got this [RegionalSettings] LanguageGroup=1 SystemLocale=00000809 UserLocale=00000809 InputLocale=0809:00000809 so I will try this
  21. I have been using RIS for some months now and have just recently managed to achieve an image that works for all of my PCs thanks to RougeSpear's AutoImage. I do still have a couple of minor problems and i was wondering if anyone could help me out. 1. During the windows part of the install (installing devices) I get a message that tells me the install couldn't rename the local administrators account. If I click ok it carries on This message is the standard windows "ERROR" message the one with the white X on a red circle Setup was unable to change the password for the user account Administrator. Please enter the desired password again. 2. I want the default language to be UK English, I thought this was possible through the .sif file I have followed examples on other sites but I still end up with English US :x 3. I want the monitor to turn off after 1 hour can i do this with a policy or can I do it during the RIS setup? I include my sif file just incase someone notices a real blooper ;SetupMgrTag [branding] BrandIEUsingUnattended=Yes [Components] AccessOpt=Off chat=off deskpaper=off freecell=off hearts=off hyperterm=off media_clips=off media_utopia=off minesweeper=off msnexplr=off msmsgs=off OEAccess=off pinball=off solitaire=off spider=off templates=off WMAccess=off WMPOCM=off zonegames=off [Data] AutoPartition=1 DisableAdminAccountOnDomainJoin=0 floppyless="1" LocalSourceOnCD=1 MsDosInitiated="1" OriSrc="\\%SERVERNAME%\RemInst\%INSTALLPATH%" OriTyp="4" UnattendedInstall="Yes" [Display] BitsPerPel = 32 XResolution = 1280 YResolution = 1024 [FavoritesEx] [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword=xxxxxxx DetachedProgram= EncryptedAdminPassword=Yes OEMSkipRegional=1 OemSkipWelcome=1 TimeZone=85 [identification] DoOldStyleDomainJoin=Yes JoinDomain=school-domain [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents=Yes ProcessPageSections=Yes [OSChooser] Description="WinXP SP2 - school custom sif file" Help="This will install Windows XP SP2." 23. I've just recieved my spanking new HP Procurves to completely upgrade my Switches and Hubs. I am trying to access one via serial to set it up but I am having real trouble talking to it (yeh and I'm ready for comments like you need a holiday if your tying to talk to switches ) I have tried hyperterminal no luck and also a program called terminal which comunicates and thats about it I can't access the setup page. Any one use procurves? what program do you use to set them up?
  24. First of all this is NOT a recomendation as such because its my wifes company. Anyway a little while ago I was talking to my wife about hardware security, you know the sort of thing tft monitors, computer cages and the like. Well then another school I was talking to said they needed some monitor brackets, I suggested my wifes company, as we had been talking about this (they are an engineering company and as yet had not delt with anything like that) anyway 3 weeks down the road a protortype has been made and very nice it is too. They best thing is they are prepared to make bespoke products to suit your needs. The Company is called H.I.T.S. Huffam IT Security and can be contacted on 01752 849118 ask for Verena or Brian and I'm sure they will only too pleased to help your specific IT security needs.
  25. Just bringing this subject up again has anyone had any experience of Thinstore? Its just that their quote has come in quite good. I know of one school localy using them but I suppose I'm just looking for a second opinion.
