  2. @Ric_ If you have a higher 10G requirement, you could look at the 5900 which, whilst it does not have the LW2, there are some fairly inexpensive NBD carepacks available which can work out at around £200/year if your reseller works hard enough on HP for you. HTH

  4. Just remember that a chassis doesn't have to be a physical chassis. HP's IRF system allows you to create a Virtual chassis consisting of two or more physical units which can be geographically separated for DR and resilience purposes. A typical deployment would be two buildings within a school campus connected with OM3 or 4 with one or more IRF switch in each thereby creating the virtual chassis in two places. Many switches are available in the HP Comware range to do this. The 5800 is a common choice. When you start to add the modules in a 5400 the price soon ramps up to meet and indeed exceed that of a couple of 5800s which come in all flavours (24G, 48G, SFP, POE etc) but all have 4 x SFP+ ports built in. Two are used for IRF connectivity but a further 4 can be added via expansion cards. HTH

  7. You could always ask for a serial number from a supplier if they have them in stock and get it checked with the vendor, not just HP.

  9. As long as your wifi is secure, is there a problem? If you reduce power, you are likely to reduce throughput and the density advantage which Meru offers.
  10. This is only true for HP Procurve switches, models from the Comware range e.g.1920, 5130 and the core 5800, 5900 etc etc will accept 3rd-party SFP and SFP+ no problem. HTH

    I would use the stacking kit rather than the SFP+ ports. The remainder of the stack will survive should a switch fail. It's similar to IRF in the Comware range like the 5800s mentioned earlier.

    You can stack the 2920 properly with stacking modules and cables. The J9733A module is a 2 port module which will connect with J9734A 1m stacking cable - 2 of them will obviouysly doubly the inter-stack bandwidth. One of the advantages of the 2920 is the possibility to add up to 2 x J9731 2 port SFP+ modules as well as the stacking module ready for you to move to 10G.

  16. Nobody has mentioned the 5800 series in IRF. The 5800 is at the top end of HP's Lifetime warranty range. It is an excellent core switch offering many many features. With the IRF technology creating a virtual chassis, you can split your core to two or more locations thereby creating a DR solution utilising live links and switches.

The 10 GbE modules (J8707A, J8708A, J9309A, J9312A, and J8694A) used in the HP E8200 zl Switch series and select E3500, E5400 zl, and E6200 yl Switch series are designed to deliver full 10 Gbps wire speed to each port, where either one or two ports are in a linked state with another device. When three or four 10-GbE ports are in a linked state, the module supports an aggregate bandwidth of 28.8 Gbps across the linked ports. As illustrated in Figure 23, internally, there are two 14.4 Gbps channels between each 4-port 10 GbE module and the switch fabric. Architecture model applies to the HP E8200 zl, E5400 zl, select E3500, and E6200 yl Switch series products. • When any two 10-GbE ports on a given module are in a linked state, each port automatically operates on its own channel, which guarantees 10 Gbps of bandwidth for each port. • When more than two ports of a 10 GbE module are in a linked state, ports 1 and 4 are statically mapped to share one 14.4 Gbps channel, while ports 2 and 3 are statically mapped to share the other 14.4 Gbps channel. −−If only one port in a given channel is in a linked state, then that port operates at wire speed and the other port uses no bandwidth. −−If both ports in a given channel are in a linked state, then the 14.4 Gbps of bandwidth is balanced fairly between the two ports.
  18. The 5406 itself should also be considered being 4:1 blocking on the 10g ports. If it's the R it's 2:1 and R zl2 is non blocking.

  20. Hi Max I would say always start at the core. Everyone will benefit and you will be a hero. Next time you ask for funds for something it will be easier too! A decent core, whether Procurce 54xx or Comware 5800 will support aggregated links so any spare fibres can me utilised to increase performance from the edges. The 1910s are being phased out for the 1920. If you are looking toward a 10G backbone, you might consider the 2530 which have SFP+ uplink ports. HTH Nick
  21. It all depends on your vision for the network. Some questions to ask are; Are you looking at a 10G backbone to all or some edge cabs. Do you intend to have VOIP requiring QoS from the edges. Do you have or will you have BYOD wireless. What is your appetite for CLI or GUI. Do you prefer one particular vendor. HTH
  22. Following a few calls, it seems you are contracted to purchase through Entrust so any pricing assistance or advice on here is irrelevant. Sorry I wasn't able to help.
  23. If you don't VLAN off the wireless, you will be exposing your entire network to a lot of broadcast traffic. Also add Meru to your wireless considerations for ease of deployment, density per AP, 802.11ac etc.

The 2530 is a very capable edge switch, in fact we use them, but when you deploy your wireless, I would presume that you would want to have your wireless on a separate VLAN to your servers in which case you will need to provide some VLAN routing. You will need a layer 3 switch to do this. A 5500HI or 5800 would be the obvious places to start looking.
