Have you looked at Brocade? The 7450 and below are have a similar lifetime warranty to HP pro curve and comware below 5800.

A broadcast storm caused by a loop is like a snowball. When you reboot your switches you are starting again and until the switches hit 80%+ utilisation, the network will appear to be ok. It's only when you hit around 80 that the storm will be evident. Checked with a couple of our engineers and they say almost certainly a loop.

Deffo sounds like a loop. Don't diss the possibility of a teacher plugging something in because it looks like it should be plugged in!

People on multi cell solutions never listen to Meru (now Fortinet) but often wish they'd at least taken a trial! The single channel solution only needs, yeah you guessed it, one channel.

The 2920 is often used for SAN switching if you have a non converged core such as the 5900 series. The 2920 has a dynamic egress packet buffer of 6.75MB and 4.5MB ingress The 1950 only has 1.5MB packet buffer.

Have you checked your fibre patch cables in your network. You may have OM3 and OM1 mismatches which can produce the strangest results. I have come across similar symptoms before which were solved by matching fibre patch cables. The escape of light from a 50 to 65 nm (or vice-versa) connection will produce completely unpredictable results. Some people get away with it for years with no apparent effect then all of sudden, bam!

I was merely pointing out that a daisy chain is poor design. I concur that dual links back to the core from a proper stack is the way to go if connectivity is available.

The 10G link between the sites (SFP+) is a great thing to have and if you have enough cores in your fibre, you could create an IRF 'ring'* utilising HP's 5800 comware switches which will add robustness and resilience to your network. The IRF will appear as a single switch from a management perspective and will continue to function in the event of a single site loss or JCB going through a fibre in a playground. *It looks like a ring but does not function in the sense of a ring and all links are active unlike in STP where one would have to be off. You end up with 20G aggregated links between your core elements. Your edge stack should not be cables as you've illustrated, you woul need to link from switch 5 back to 1 to complete the stack. Stacking modules in the 2920 come with two ports so you would use 4 x 0.5m stacking cables and 21 x 3m for example. If you do not stack then you should avoid the daisy chan and patch each physical element back into switch one thus; Alternatively, if budget allows, you could create an IRF'd edge stack using comware edge switches such as the 5130.

A few questions and pointers. What fibre infrastructure do you have? What switches do you currently have, maybe existing core could be reused at the edge? Consider 1920 & 1950 Poe and non Poe How many dabs coming back to core (how many 10g ports required there) Flat or VLANs? Talk to other local schools to find out what they did and who they use.

Have a look at the HP 5800 (JC100B) as a core. It is a common model with 2920's as TOR edge. The 5800 offers 4 built in SFP+ with an option to add 4 more via expansion card. 2 or more 5800's can be used to make a virtual chassis which offers robustness and resilience to your core.

Hi, sorry I meant a proper IRF stack or stack via stacking modules. You could try the 'reload system' command. I will ask one of our engineers next time one's here.

The 1500 has not been supported for a number of years. I can ask our engineers if any of them have any upgrades in their archives. Sorry not to have better news.
