We run "internal track and trace" and only send home other students (or staff) who were seated within 2m of the positive student for a whole lesson, this seems to equate to 5-10 students per class. Any mixing during lesson transition or break doesn't count as (based on what I was told) the guidelines we're following say we only have to worry about prolonged contact (30 min or more). I assume this is what some level of govt has told us to do. To my mind, it feels very much based around isolating the minimum number of students possible (which one might argue isn't necessarily a bad thing). In the case of the football didn't they use surge testing rather than isolation?

Morning Guys, Like a lot of people, we've moved into using Office 365 and Teams to deliver teaching and are hoping to move into using Office 365 more in the future. But the issue with Supply teachers needing Teams access is starting to come up. So, like the title says, how do you handle setting them up. Given we don't normally know about them until the last minute, is there any way around us having to go in manually give them access to all their classes? Or any way to streamline the process? Thanks!

This is looking like one of those "feature creep" things for us. The assumption being that we will now be giving out laptops to any student who doesn't have device access at home going forward. We're using Sophos for web filtering and hoping to azure join them. I can't find it now, but I remember a big debate last year when everyone started sending devices home that concluded that if it's a school owned device then we should be monitoring/content filtering it regardless of where it is.

Dual monitors would be a must for me ideally on a dual stand or wall mounted. In fact I'd shoot for a bank of small/medium sized monitors wall mounted somewhere for monitoring kit and testing/imaging. Wall mount as many monitors as you can, it looks better IMO and gives you more desk space. All our techs are set up with primary pc with dual monitors on a dual monitor stand, secondary testing pc (normally with default staff image) with a single smaller monitor, wall mounted, and a single wireless keyboard and mouse shared between the two machines using one of these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074TZKGVR They all really like the setup. Lockable storage, even if the room is locked. Having the kit to crimp/stamp your own network cables is super useful. So is a unit/shelf/line on the floor/wall that's exactly 1m long for checking cable length (I suck at judging this sort of thing by eye). Otherwise the only real tool I still use on the regular is a multibit screwdriver with a (probably overkill) extensive set of security bits, and a tape measure (as I said, I can't judge size very well). The one thing I've never had but would love is an office where I don't have my back to the door.

I got it. Toying with whether to answer now with 1, or wait until next week when we've started rolling through the loaned devices and the response sounds a little less sarcastic. We're getting them brought back for resetting on a rolling bases between now and the end of term as the school wants the kids to have the laptops over the holidays (and we have enough summer work already).

True, and I guess until the bigger titles get pinned down (or postponed to next year) the smaller devs will hold off rather than risk releasing the same day or just after one of the big AAAs.

Bits and pieces. Summer Gaming Show (Gamesfest or whatever) confirmed that Elden Ring still exists and might be coming January 2021. There were some cool looking things out of the MS confrence, but I don't understand why they'd give dates for Starfield and STLAKER (both provisionally next year), but not Halo (supposedly Nov/Dec this year). Lake and 12 Minutes both looked really interesting and are both late summer releases. It feels like everyone's holding off committing their Q4 releases for some reason.

I'd expect at least a year's overlap. In fact I'd plump for a 2022/23 release. Consider that Windows 10 came out in 2015 and Windows 8 mainstream support ended 2018 (and Win7 ended in 2020), and Win7 came out 2009 while XP didn't retire until 2014)

We're looking at this now and all our regular suppliers use Freedomtech. HP DAAS is looking like a possible alternative, and I'd avoid Dell PCAAS as they don't seem well set up for the whole parental leasing model.

Yeah pretty much. Upgrade to newer APs, and probably put a couple of extra in to improve coverage.

Hi Guys, My Parents' golf club recently got someone in to look at improving their club-house wifi, and they said that they couldn't do anything because it would be against CAA rules due to proximity to Gatwick airport (they're about 2 miles away as the crow flies). This sounds like nonsense to me, but I wanted to check if any of you guys know anything about such regulations? Thanks!

What about using https://mouseacceleration.com/ to set up a custom acceleration curve that drops the sensitivity at higher speeds?

To throw another option into the mix, Filewave works well for us with apple devices.

Only thing I'd add to Norphy's reply, is that if your server has dual (presumably redundant) power supplies, it would be ideal if they could be on different supplies.

If you've given them all "work iPads" then I really don't see any issue with banning personal devices. (Or having them on a separate guest type network if you're feeling kind)

Could you use NPS and just have guest AD accounts?

Looks cool, but I'm always a little suspicious of the "it's free, honest, but we want your credit card details anyway" type deals.

The database allows you to have a list of "known computers" (by mac address) that have pre-defined task sequences/application deployments, so when you come to reimage them you already have the right name, applications, rolls, etc set. Not sure about the media.

According to the guys that put the system in here, PV panels are low cost enough that the larger surface area is better than making sure they're all facing south. (Only aspect they avoided was north-facing)

We've been binging through the Nevers on Sky Atlantic. Very interesting so far. (Probably going to do The Pact next.)
