The Mass Effect novelisations are pretty good and the first 3 (the ones written by Karpyshyn) act as a sort-of-prequel to each game. If there is a live action TV show/film (I hope the Cavell thing is true) I see it being another story "in the world of" rather than a direct adaptation of the game - As much as I'd like to see someone try, I don't see a straight up "Sheppard's story from the games" film/TV series being well received. Given how branching the game story is what version do you even choose? FYI, there is a James Vega backstory animated film.

When this was discussed during the first lockdown (it might even be in this thread somewhere), the consensus was "your device, your responsibility" when it comes to safeguarding. If the kid does something silly using school equipment then the school could be at fault. However if you SLT are okay with it, I don't see why you can't pass responsibility down to the parents as long as you have signed documentation saying the parents understand and will do their part (the normal CYA stuff).

To be fair, we ordered the pre-configured windows devices and didn't even bother unboxing them before they went out. (Of course now we've got to reset them all to use our own management solution)

Does anyone know where I can find out what web content was blocked on the DfE secured laptops with Cisco Umbrella? (One of our students has claimed they used to be able to access Facebook and Instgram before put our own web-filtering on the laptop)

We just stick a factory windows image on them and it picks up the machine license fine. At one point we looked at using clonezilla to copy over a sysprepped image with basic stuff pre-setup, but now we're just using intune. Students get the laptop OBE and log in with their school 365 account at setup. Seems to be working great. Can't you just put a mac key in the image? In fact you should be able to do an MDT task sequence that doesn't domain join and sets up a local user account.

When we upgraded our Mac suite back at Easter, we returned all the wireless keyboards/mice for credit against the order and got a batch of wired ones.

We enrolled them in our Intune and gave them back to the students (or are in the process of doing so). The ones we got back from Y11s will be distributed to incoming Y7s who don't have access to tech at home. Everything I've read says the laptops are the property of the school/establishment who ordered them from the DfE. So if you got them through the DfE portal direct, ownership resides with the school. If you got them through the LA/CC or some other group (we had one through the Digital School and a couple through child services), then ownership defaults to that organization, and they can choose to transfer ownership to the school or the families. I believe most LAs are kicking ownership down to the schools. Technically if they're yours (as described above), I don't see why you shouldn't be able to write them off and donate them to the families, which would mean you would no longer need to manage or do anything with them. But that potentially a lot of "capital" the school is loosing, so you might to need to be able to make the business case for it.

I have to agree, why is it so much worse now than when we had strict lockdowns last year, or in the winter when the case rate was through the roof.

Yeah. When I first started out I wound up working weekends with Wed and Thurs off instead, and I think there was only one teacher who ever pegged it and didn't ask me if I was looking forward to the weekend on Friday. Teachers where I am now a pretty good and normally ask "did you get any time off?"

Joke all you want, but I think this is going to become a genuine problem for shops. People have enough choice (what with amazon selling pretty much everything now) that customers don't really need to go into any shop. The customer has all the power, if people don't want to jump through whatever hoops the shop puts up (be that masks or anything else), they'll just buy elsewhere and the shops will suffer. The govt isn't going to bail out shops that are failing because of this anymore than they would a shop that's failing because there's no market for it. Which is going to put a lot of pressure on shops to lift restrictions which then puts staff at increased risk and in a horrible position of having to work somewhere they're not comfortable. Which is to say, I do not envy retail right now.
