How many physical NICs for the ESXi configuration?
teejay replied to Ignatius's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Are you buying a new box to do this or using some existing hardware? Just make sure the processors support virtualisation, there are a few being sold that don't for some bizarre reason. Also, processor speed isn't an absolute killer in a test environment, but memory is, especially if you want to be running a few VM's, so that's where you need to make the investment. -
VLANS aren't always the solution, you need to analyse what is causing the congestion before splitting your network. Get hold of wireshark and do some analysis with it. Particularly look out for devices causing loads of broadcast traffic and see if you can reduce this (usually printers or machines with incorrect dns).

How many physical NICs for the ESXi configuration?
teejay replied to Ignatius's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Posted this in another thread, but you might find this useful: You only need one nic, the pic below shows how to set up the vswitches, virtual and physical nics. I tend to use ipcop or smoothwall express as a firewall, simply because they are easy to use and you can easily test punching holes through to servers such as web servers, vpn etc. -
It's not on Kindle.

For your religious side: The Shack (in fact that's a good read for anyone) The Left Behind Series (as long as you don't take them seriously, they're a bit 'american evangelical' but good as action fiction) Others: The Shadow Of The Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon Soul Identity by Dennis Batchelder (free on kindle)

[android] CyanogenMod CM7.0.0 now available
teejay replied to SimpleSi's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hmm, might give that a go tonight, see if they've fixed the marketplace problem I had with RC4. -
Or alternatively you could say it's protecting the human rights of the women who are forced to wear the veil by their husband/family. I also wouldn't call it racist, people who wear the veil are from different races, but usually from the same religion. Personally, no I don't agree with the legislation, existing legislation could be used to protect the women, however a friend who does voluntary work supporting vulnerable and abused women in this group supports it.

Take up naturism at home, that'll stop her barging in. On second thoughts, she might think it's a good idea and join you....

[android] Reflashed my first Android phone
teejay replied to JJonas's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Had a play over the weekend, it's definitely a problem with CM7 RC4, I upgraded to the nightly build and that worked but was slow and buggy, which is to be expected really. Ended up sticking PirateRum on it, which works really nicely and gives my phone that aaaaarrrrrrrr factor -
Your other option, if you have either the Intel NIC Server Management or the Broadcom Management utility on your ghost server is to add all the VLANS you want to ghost into on the server nic as tagged VLANS and set an IP address for the Ghost server in each VLAN (make sure you disable DNS updating on these). Bit messy and needs testing as I haven't tried this with Ghost.

Yep, can definitely see a Willie

Thanks, I'm just absolutely dumbfounded by them. I really thought the expenses scandal would've been a wake up call to them to behave properly, but obviously not. Maybe Egypt/Libya etc have the right idea....

The Finance (3) Bill is going through parliamment at the end of the month which closes a load of tax loopholes, good news you'd think? Well, it is apart from a little clause in it which excludes MP's from being covered by the legislation:mad: It gets debated at the end of April, so now is a good time to write to your MP and express your feelings on Section 554(8) of the Finance (3) Bill, you can email them using http://www.writetothem.com website.

[android] Reflashed my first Android phone
teejay replied to JJonas's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Did the same, but they're not installed. Have also tried without selecting that option. New apps install fine, it just seems to be ones I had installed on with the HTC Desire ROM. -

Anyone else had problems downloading apps from the marketplace once the phone has been flashed? I put CM7RC4 on and now there are a bunch of apps that won't download, including Google Maps, Robo Defense (full paid for version), if I restore my phone back to the HTC Desire rom then they download fine. I basically get the download icon appear for about a second and then dissapears, no error message. -
They'll be bathing in Tango to get that nice orange look.

Looks about right, one other thing you could consider is an IT Admin VLAN which you would use in your office so you can lock down things like switch management, remote access to servers etc.

There were problems with virtualising your main DC with earlier versions of virtualisation software, but not anymore. A lot of the online articles on this are out of date. As localzuk has said, as long as you avoid snapshotting the things it's fine. The only thing I would say is that you are better installing a new DC from scratch and transferring the roles from the old one than doing a physical to virtual conversion. The big advantage is that you make the machine pretty much hardware agnostic, so if you need to move it onto another box it's very simple to do, great for disaster recovery and future upgrades.

Fact 89a: According to a survey of 100'000 men in America, 53% of them have been happier since they didn't buy their girlfriends anything for Valentine's Day this year.

You're not working for a corned beef importer by any chance...

If you support AV, instead of a Yes/No referendum we should be giving you some options, so how about putting the following in order of preference: [ ] Yes [ ] No [ ] Maybe [ ] Haven't a clue [ ] I'm can't decide so I'll just stick numbers next to all of them [ ] I can't count past 3 [ ] Is this the vote for my local councillor? [ ] Do I get fried rice with that?
-
Nothing fairer about AV, just a different way of voting that will probably affect the outcome for a couple of MP's at most. The best way forward would be to stick to the current system but with a 'None of the Above' vote, if 'None of the Above' has the majority, then no-one is voted in, a re-election is called with none of the candidates from the first vote able to stand. This second ballot should not have a 'None of the Above' or if it does it shouldn't trigger another ellection. This will enable people to get rid of MP's that don't work for their constituency and hold them more accountable, which is really what we all want.

Well, had my shiney new Ruckus kit for 3 days and have managed to stuff the Zone Director:doh: Anyone know how to reset the security certificate for the web interface from the command line? Completely broken the web interface with an invalid certificate, have tried doing a factory reset but that doesn't reset the certificate to the factory installed one.

I'm working in the wrong country, the newest machine in our office is 4 years old.
