What size of backups are you looking at storing? We have a lot of data and virtual/physical servers to back up, the only option for us was tape using hardware encrypted tape drives, you cannot take backup tapes off-site unless they are encrypted. We keep most tapes on-site, but the latest full weekend backup goes off-site. HDD just doesn't work that well if you want to off-site large quantities of data, internet/cloud is eye wateringly expensive for the amount of storage we would need even though everyone bangs on about how it reduces costs:doh: So, for small amounts of data then any of the options work fine, as you ramp the size up then tape starts to become the most cost effective unless you are a dual site and can do d2d across the 2 sites.

Have stayed out of this so far, but hey, here goes:p Last count, there are at least 1.6 billion Muslims, how many are kicking up a fuss over the film, a few thousand. By those figures, you can easily say that there is a massive majority of Muslims who are very tolerant of the film and really aren't fussed over it, it's just a very, very tiny minority who have taken offence. By those standards, you could argue that Islam is a very tolerant religion. Same with every other major religion, the massive majority are peaceful people just getting on with their lives and following their religion to the best of their ability. Now, the other comment I have seen in this thread and others is 'I don't mind people having a religion, as long as they only practice it in private.'. As good Humanists/Atheists, I presume your fundamental set of morals are based around the UN Declaration of Human Rights? If so, may I point you to: Therefore, rather than classing everyone who has any belief in a religion as an idiot, please be a bit more tolerant and accepting, giving everyone the same right to freedom of thought. Just to give you an idea of what the religions are doing, in our local town we have the following: Street Angels - helping people out and about town on a Friday/Saturday night making sure they people are safe, clearing up rubbish, helping people in need or distress. Drop In Centre - providing food, clothing and support to over 120 homeless, asylum seekers, unemployed in need every Saturday. Asylum Seekers - providing accommodation, food and activities to asylum seekers, and before you say these are just scroungers coming over for benefits, try talking to them and finding out their life stories, most are very harrowing. Beds for the homeless - over winter around 30 homeless are given beds overnight in churches. Rehabilitation for offenders - a house run and funded by the local churches to house and rehabilitate offenders, most having drug/alcohol addictions. Annual event to celebrate the local area, attracted over 10,000 people this year. Interfaith organisations working to ease any racial tensions. There are prison visitors, people supporting the elderly, you name it, all organised and run by religious organisations. They are also not there to start evangelising, in fact that is strictly forbidden for most of these things, they are just there as they want to help people. The problem is, all the good stuff done by religious groups never makes the news, it's only the extremists causing trouble or the silly arguments in the CofE that make the headlines. Overall, if you actually looked at all the good stuff being done today by religious groups, it far outweighs the negatives. Just my thoughts and an alternative view...

Ok, thanks everyone, I think I'm heading more towards the standard MacBook Pro with the hi-res screen, but could anyone confirm that you can still take out the hard drive and replace it with a 3rd party SSD? I have seen some things where Apple have locked it down in the OS so you can't do this? I presume 3rd party mem upgrades are fine?

Hmm, the thing I'm most interested in is screen real estate as I would be using some video editing software and also some dev software, so would I be better with the hi res version of the normal one or the retina display?

Yes I need both, I do a fair bit of media work so need to burn cd/dvd's and also do need a lan connection at times.

Hi, I'm seriously thinking about moving over to the dark side and getting a MacBook Pro. I can't decide between the normal 15" MacBook and the retina model. From what I understand the retina one has a better display, is thinner and lighter but is completely non upgradeable if you wanted more memory or a bigger ssd and would mean carrying around extra cables and bits for a lan adaptor and dvd drive. The normal MacBook Pro 15 has the dvd drive and lan built in and as I understand it can take a memory upgrade and you could put in a 3rd party ssd, or have Apple locked out this option now? Also, if I went with the normal one is it worth paying the extra £75 for the hi-res screen? Flippin lot of money but hopefully worth it...

Are you sticking Linux on them then? If installing Windows you'll need an OEM licence supplied with the machine or a full retail version, volume licencing are upgrades from these.

I got really fed up with the low carb diet and the meals and fell off the rails for a bit putting about a stone back on. I've changed to the Harcombe diet which seems to be working really well and has a much better range of food you can eat. It's basically about avoiding processed food and not mixing carbs and protein too much in the same meal. I've lost all the weight I put back on and have lost another 6lbs beyond that:) I'm actually quite pleased as my skin was getting really saggy before, but this time it seems to have shrunk better with me. I'm also in sight (1 stone away) of being overweight rather than obese on the BMI scale:) Exercise wise, getting a new dog has made me a lot more active, I do 2 of the 3 walks each day and play with him quite a lot, can't wait until he's old enough next year to go on some decent long walks. I'm really noticing the difference when walking as I used to come back with really sore knees and an inflamed ankle from an old injury, don't get any of that now. Another couple of stone and I may even start doing some running again which I haven't done for years!

Accountz is about your best option on Mac, you could also use the online versions of Quickbooks or Sage, If you want to do everything you've mentioned then you need the pro version of Accountz, you can download a trial version from their website, Award Winning Accounting Software for Mac and Windows | Bookkeeping Software | Accountz. It is a UK company so does support the UK tax systems properly unlike some US based software:rolleyes: If you want free, then GnuCash is installable on Mac, it's pretty good but you have to be careful setting it up for a UK business.

It can, there is a thin client project for the RPi - Raspberry Pi Thin Client project, only problem is the Microsoft licencing which is a real stumbling block.
