Gas are great, except if you want to use it in your tent and you have a small tent, then it's gets a bit dodgy. If you do go gas, make sure you get a CO monitor for your tent, even if you have no intention of using the gas lamp in your tent because you will do at some point. Raid 5/6 is usually fine unless you have something like an sql database that gets heavily hammered then you might want to look at raid 10. Check with the backup software vendor on encryption and usb support, not all backup software supports these or some do support them but require an extra licensed module. I don't know what the data protection laws are like in Canada, but in the UK the fines if you lost an unencrypted drive with confidential customer data on it are far higher than the cost of the extra licenses!

Xeons all the way, Intel really have the edge with their processors at the moment, shame really. Your cheapest option is plenty of local storage, for your main vm server try to go with half decent sas drives, for your dc/backup sata will be fine. Cloud backup gets very expensive when you ramp up the size of data, so some sort of external hdd's would do the job nicely. Just make sure you encrypt the data if you're taking it offsite.

If you are using local storage rather than a SAN then 4 NIC's would be fine, most servers come with 4 inbuilt anyway now. I would certainly get 2 processors to start with so they are properly matched. RAM is cheap at the moment, so the more the merrier and don't skimp so I would regard 32Gb as the minimum.

Having been a big fan of these originally, having recently been bitten in the backside by the Oracle version of the software and the poor support I would grudgingly say look elsewhere. Shop around and haggle, you'll be surprised how the prices drop on storage products once you start playing them off against each other, certainly don't go off list or your first quotes

Yes it's good to have a DC on a seperate box. What I do tend to do is still stick the VMWare ESXi hypervisor on that box but just the free version and kept seperate from your VM cluster. It makes it much easier to transfer to other hardware in case of disaster recovery. If you have the money, I'd also spec it with enough hdd's so that you can run the core VM's to keep the business running in case the core stack failed. I'd also locate it in a different part of the building of possible.

I'm astounded by your LEA though, for staff to get any access to SIMS either by Terminal services, SLG or any other solution you need access from the admin to the curriculum network, even if it's only ports 80/443 for web based communication. I thought split networks had disappeared years ago, but obviously not.

TASC PARS would do what you need and more, it runs on an IIS web server and talks directly to SIMS and allows the teachers computers to access it via their web browser. I think there's an equivalent Bromcom solution called teachers webfolder.

You're absolutely right @AngryTechnician, unfortunately a lot of laws don't apply in the House of Commons bars, such as the smoking ban and iirc some of the licencing laws. It really is one rule for us, one for them.

It's actually a more cost effective solution than the chopping down half a rainforest paper based solution they had before, so I've no problem with this. I do have a problem with their subsidised bars which mean they turn up to vote so p:censored:d that they can't remember where to go to vote!
