Just to put this in context, Vodafone as an international company has a turnover of around £46 billion, it's total international tax bill is just over £14 billion of which around £1.4 billion is paid in the UK, the rest is paid in other countries it operates in. Who said anything about a private pension, what about your Local Government Pension Scheme, their main investment is in shares. You have savings in an ISA, well that's invested in shares. Shares in companies can be bought by anyone, there is no law that says shares can only be bought if you went to Eton:rolleyes: Vodafone, Starbucks, Amazon etc still pay a huge chunk in tax, look at Employer NICs, Business Rates, etc etc. The headline figures are mainly about one tax, Corporation Tax, which raises around £44 billion per year, less than 10% of the total tax receipts, your state pension and your healthcare are mainly funded through Income Tax, National Insurance and VAT which account for around £360 billion.

Total remuneration of the Directors was £6.7 million, that small bit to the right of the chart. That big bit on the left of the chart is the total dividend payout to shareholders, ie 'the man on the street' who owns shares in Vodafone, the pension fund of 'the man on the street', had a payout of over £6 billion, on which tax is paid by the receiver of the dividend. Look at the two biggest shareholders in Vodafone, one is an investement company used by pension funds, the other is Legal & General, a pension company.

Since schools get paid on a per pupil basis this happens already. It's an interesting thought though, if there wasn't really a DfE and all it did was allocate schools a budget based on pupils on roll, would the standard of education improve or get worse?

@Pyroman a planned withdrawal from Afghanistan is already in place, please remember who took us in there in the first place, you can't blame that on the current administration. As for Vodafone, well yes I think the government caved in too easily on this one, but I also feel that companies have every right to do what they can to be tax efficient in a legal manner. You may think that all the money goes to money grabbing barsteward directors, but the vast majority goes on employing staff, which is what we need as a country. Their tax bill is huge anyway from all the other taxes outside of corporation tax, think business rates, employer NICs etc, you can even argue VAT and employee NICs and income tax is payed by the company, although they are technically customer and employee taxes. You also have to remember that having a profitable company benefits the shareholders. Who are the biggest shareholders, pension companies, including including local government pension schemes, so if you want a pension, you want strong profitable companies.

Feel sorry for the people losing their jobs, but tbh the education department is pretty bloated. Hopefully this will sharpen the focus on the important stuff rather than all the pointless twaddle that's sent out, classic example is the constant changes to the census data collection, which costs a fortune.

Just dug up the pricing for when we looked at SLG self hosted, the figure we were quoted is similar to what @glennda has said. We did have SLG hosted by Capita for a while, but ditched it due to the number of problems we were having and moved to TASC Insight hosted internally which has worked brilliantly. Capita really could learn a thing or two from TASC about how to provide a proper level of support.

Have a look at TASC Insight, much cheaper than SLG and in my opinion and that of our parents it's much better.

Ease of use from the end user perspective and quality of apps. Yes they can be a pita to integrate into an existing network, but that's a technical problem that can be overcome. As a technical person, I much prefer the Android tablet I had a trial of and do have an Android phone, but as a productivity tool for meetings etc I pick up the iPad.

Skydrive, Dropbox and the multitude of other cloud storage services work pretty well, although you do need to check on the security standards used as not all are compliant with EU Safe Harbour requirements (also some are compliant, but the data is stored in the US where the Patriot Act trumps EU Safe Harbour anyway:rolleyes:). As some of the meeting notes etc that SLT want to use are probably highly confidential, then this is an important thing for them to be aware of. Filebrowser works ok, it can be a bit of a faff but it does work. The only problem is when they are at a meeting and have forgotten to copy the docs across while in school, so you will also need VPN access that is compatible with the iPad. Webdav is probably the best way to go as it integrates better with the iPad, that or Skydrive as the data is stored in Europe but they do have to remember to sync the docs the want into Skydrive first. As an ex Apple basher, after using an iPad for the last month I have to say they are a great productivity tool, far better than dragging a laptop around, I would actually encourage use by management. Yes there are other devices available and yes technically Android and Win 8 slabs are going to be technically better, but I would argue that the iPad is the better option for management to use.

Yep, about right. Bit dearer than other monitors in that size range but far better quality than others I've seen.

Sat in front of a U2412M as I type this, lovely monitors if you can find them at a good price, brilliant for decent colour reproduction.
