Many thanks for your prompt response initially no drivers injected via MDT.... usb didnt work Then imported model specific drivers from the hp website and injected them into image. MDT dialogue appears to confirm that they are being injected ... usb stil not working Ran the pc up on usb install media for vanilla win10, installed fine and mouse etc still working. Accessed Device Manager to note the driver it was using..Intel 6 series/c200 Went to Intel site to download, found relevant driver but Intel were very clear stating that it didnot include USB drivers so wouldnt cure any usb related issues. have just sysprepped it after a fresh install of win 10, erebooted it and everything fine! I am wondering if one of the routine MS Updates that I applied has caused the issue As the current customised image works on all other machines so far, I think I will leave these desktops til after the summer

Hi Not sure if this is right forum but.... I have been deploying custom W10 image via MDT to our PCs. All works well apart from some 5 yr old HP dc-3300 desktop PCs. The USB connected keyboard and mouse work during the Win PE part of the deployment, but once the image is loaded they cease to work. If I boot from USB based "vanilla" windows 10 installation media all is well I actually used this machine as our reference image creator from a clean install of windows 10, after loading the applications etc I did the usual sysprep generalize OOBE which completed with no errors. captured the image and imported it into MDT as a custom image. when I then started what was the reference pc the usual select region screen appears but USB connected keyboard and mouse not responsive. I have subsequently loaded the image onto a number of other PCs including Lenovo and Dell without issues. Any clues gratefully received.

Hi We have been in same situation in the past. The only usb serial adaptor that we found worked consistently is this one based upon the FTDI chipset. USB 2.0 to RS232 Adaptors - works with Windows 7 (FTDI Chipset) USBNow.co.uk or do the pc's have a slot available inside for a PCI board with standard RS232 ports? I think these boards are fairly low cost.

Had this problem the other day and solved it by creating c:\emptydir then using robocopy to mirror the empty directory to the problem one. worked like a dream 1. create empty directory eg mkdir c:\emptydir 2. robocopy c:\emptydir "problem dir" /s /mir 3. delete the ,now empty, problem dir also sorted several permission errors on deeply nested links

Hi I am at special school and only have 150 student computers and 20 student laptops so it is fairly easy to know who damaged what. If damage is deliberate then bill for damage is sent home. I am also called upon every so often to "explain" the consequence of young persons actions. Usually the prospect of having to do all classwork with pen and paper is enough to curb their behaviour. Failing to follow adults instructions also leads to Internet blocks etc. I do find here that support is a two way affair, I support teachers with the kids behaviours, and they support me with patience and understanding. This does backfire sometimes though as one of the kids kicked off the other day because he couldn't find me to tell me that he was going to try his hardest to have a good day

Domain joined here. Offline files (encrypted) . Remote access is allowed selectively over VPN via Fortigate. Had to educate some teachers as they had a couple of synch problems due to the way they were working. Apart from that absolutely fine. We used to use LEA for Internet so just created a couple of scripts imaginatively named "At Work" and "At Home" to toggle the Use Proxy setting. Since moving away from LEA no need for this.

Hi all +1 for Ruckus and Net-Ctrl in Ipswich. System has not had a single failure since installation over 3 years ago. Easy to set up, but also had the fine tuning functionality available that we needed. Real World performance has been great with no complaints at all from the Users. We use the APs Mesh functionality to linkn some PortaKabins to the main school network and that has also been a success. Net-Ctrl were very helpful and there wasn't a hint of an "upsell" cant say what support is like as we haven't had to use them!! Pre sales tech support was much better than expected and one of their techies was more than happy to come and walk round the school to determine AP density (we are built on a hill and so loads of thick external walls starting at different levels) Pricing was excellent with various education only bundles available.

I would agree that some more lenses, BUT go for fixed focal length rather than Zoom. You will have better lens quality and wider aperture setting allowing you to explore and exploit the depth-of-field that such a range will give. I would plump for (in full frame 35mm equiv) a 25mm or 35mm wide angle, and a 135mm telephoto (excellent for portraits). I would also go for a decent lense with proper macro functionality for extreme close ups. A decent off-camera flash unit with a movable head to use bounce/indirect lighting and a decent tripod wouldnt go amiss. Check out ebay as there always seems to be plenty of gear on there. Most of all have fun experimenting, thats what its all about

Roaming profiles here with the usual folder redirections Pupils also use roaming but shared Desktop All restrictions through separate GPOs for Teachers, Pupils, etc etc Normally v reliable until teacher backs up their 64Gb memory stick to their Desktop!! and then complains of slow login I do monitor the size of Desktops share to deal with this sort of issue though.

I dont deny that there may be free alternatives to the mainstream, but with the low cost of the MS software, to me it is a no brainer in my current role. I would certainly rather use the products that my suppliers, SLT, Contractors are used to when working collaboratively. Anyway OP wanted to know software that we cannot do without and I have, I hope, contributed to that request in my initial post on this thread Dont feel that I have to justify to anyone outside of the organisation that I work for. I am sure that your post will prove very useful to those looking for free alternatives. Teamviewer? Yes Really! in our environment where we have a distributed user base that work over 3 counties with Laptops, the cost is peanuts compared to time wasted and additional mileage claims, of course I have explored other options for these users who are not particularly IT Gurus but this is the most practical for them to use. Ask yourself which products are used by commercial support companies for remote support and I should think you will find it is primarily Teamviewer or Go To Assist. Visio. I am a one man department. do you think I should spend hours using free tools or MS Draw to attempt to provide properly scaled drawings for office layouts, new installs, network documentation, schematics, flowcharts etc. Start using the product and you will quickly see the benefits. MS Project. Invaluable and time saving, what do you use for project management? excel spreadsheets with manual Gannt Charts, a plain do-list, how do you deal with planning resource availabiity with multiple, sometimes parrallel projects? I of course use powershell, access etc etc, but my time is the most limited resource that I have. Having spent the bulk of my IT career (since 1981) in the commercial sector where every spend is backed by a business case, I can assure you that I do not spend my very limited budget frivorousley. The OP asked what software we find useful, your post does nothing to contribute to that question. Each one of us work in different environments with a similar thread that is the education sector so of course software used will, and should, reflect those environments. Please try not to be too judgemental. Currently sat at my desk planning the IT elements of the proposed new buildings here and updating network documentation whilst deploying images left right and centre using MDT/WDS (Free)

I find MS Project (£50 per user )invaluable for all but the smallest project, probably only use about 10% of its features, but a huge time saver, also impresses the bosses when they walk in my room and see project plans, Gannt charts etc on the wall. I also use MS Visio (£40 per user) extensively for network mapping, floor plans, org charts etc. It has superb Layer functionality and actually handles Autocad files quite well. Teamviewer is my best friend as it only costs about £380 pa for one technician and unlimited endpoints.

I always use the Microsoft "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" yes I know it says Windows 7 but I have found it o be both simple and reliable for creating boot usbs with Windows 10 ISO s downloaded from VLSC Downloa and install tool Open tool, select .iso file, select target usb drive. it formats the usb stick, makes it bootable and unpacks the .iso onto the drive. Insert drive into new desktop/laptop... jit F12 for boot menu and select the usb drive. I have used it for all flavours of Win 10 many times without issue

Have you checked everything on the client machine that you are trying to connect from? The usual stuff clear temp files, check adaptor settings netmask etc, cleared all references too the old ip, flush local dns cache, etc does ipconfig /all throw up any random clues? does it ping and tracert ok? are LAN switch ports configured correctly? DHCP settings? Firwall settings I would be tempted to forget all that you have done todate, treat as a new issue and start from the basics, hence does it ping ok etc etc? Is there anyone else on site who could have a look at the problem with fresh eyes? aT least it sounds like the problem is consistent rather than intermittant Good luck

this may be a bit off the wall...but whats the size of your downloads folder? I recently had similar problems as I forgot that I had downloaded a number of ISOs from the volume licencing center (around 8GB) Is it worth checking for size of profile that is being loaded? otherwise I would agree with DNS issues, have you checked forwarders etc are all correct and in the correct order

Same as Mole ...diddley squat. Change of head and attitude of "Bursar" not conducive to giving my time free, used to be give and take but now just take!!! Staff here are deducted pay of even 1/2 an hour (about £5 for some) when attending unforseen appointments etc. I was deducted half a days pay for atending a funeral of a close relative, this was the last straw for me so its now overtime or i dont do it. When I worked in the real world I was salaried at a level where " a reasonable amount of overtime is included in the salary" any significant work say replacing companies telephone system at weekends etc was remunerated via one of bonus. Here I am paid the bare minimum for the work that I do so dont see why I should then give my time free. Having said all that, I am of course willing to work for my current package as i am getting close to retirement and mortgage free, but it still irks me the lack of people skills that the seniors have. They simply do not get it that if you treat your staff kindly then they will more than make up for it by being more flexible saving money in the long term. Sorry that was a bit of a rant.... couldnt help it.

+1 for netgear here Originally used 13 years ago as could not afford HP or Cisco. Very few problems, the odd fan failure (x2) but that is it. One of my base "rules" is to keep all infrastructure the same manufacturer wherever possible. That way all kit is using the same interpretation of "Standards". We were also using Netgear managed wireless upto 3 years ago but then reviewed our requirements and went for Ruckus, good decision as it has turned out, mega reliable, flexible, and fast.

thats why we only keep current academic year on "live" server. we only backup daily to a NAS in another building. its only our critical data that is also sent to Redstore. However, I am only talking about 150GB of photos per year so not too unmanagable. BTW why does the site keep missing letters that i have typed,? i have resorted to composing posts in word and then copy/pasteing them into the forum

Hi , only current academic year on server. Archived to a NAS as part of Summer housekeeping each year, we have to keep most as we are a special school so photos/videos are used as evidence. Regular sweep of staff drive with one to one "training" if anyone errant! Regular search of Photo share for filenames beginning "copy". Staff have to request access to archived photos so that they are advised of our local rules about the use of pictures once pupil has left.

As one of the "affected customers" I presented schools broadband with a time limited action plan to improve reliability or plan for exiting contract. They took this on-board, and since changing filter group away from Filter 11(first agreed action on plan) our service has been rock solid and noticeably faster. The initial performance/reliability period is nearly up and I am pleased to say that I am 100% with the outcome. Only negative is that if they had moved us to another filter group when we first requested it we would have saved an awful lot of hassle.

Looks like its time to go shopping! As they are all fairly old, do you have the budget to be able to reassess your needs and replace the existing flaky switches with more appropriate/manageable unit(s)? If some of the ports have already gone on a unit its fair to assume that further failure is impending. I really would recomend being ahead of the game and replacing it before it fails. If you explain the potential impact with SLT or the Head then I am fairly sure that they wont want to be without Server access.

Hi I have had several elderly netgear switches cause issuesbecause of fan failure. Are they running hot? Is the switch firmware up to date? +1 for reducing the daisy-chaining by plugging each switchdirect to server switch port to reduce hops
