  1. Yup your right, was in late tonight so gave the 7 KMS key a shot on 2008 R2 and it rejected it. I should have an R2 KMS key comming through with the Select order I've put in so might just reassign the keys arround the servers to bring it onto the one I want. Faff? Yes, but then atleast I know where everything is.
  2. Just to piggyback on this topic - I don't have a KMS key for Server 2008 R2, but do for Windows 7. If I run the command in the 1st post with my Windows 7 key, it'll activate my windows 7 clients but not screw anything up with my server key, if that right? Thanks!
  3. Haven't tried this as I'm just in the early stages of setting up WDS/MDT for deployment, but maybe give the Non-PXE Boot section from this site? Windows Deployment Service (WDS) - Unattended Installations Be interested to know if it works!
  4. I'm 99.9% sure you'll only see them on the Lesson Monitor tab if you are logged in as the teacher who it is assigned too - it works the same way with profiles
  5. If you can backdate the Smoothwall referal 6 months or so your welcome to it
  6. Sold! That took a lot of convincing didn't it? Will check my diary tomorrow - think I'm keeping it fairly empty at the moment though
  7. Are LUNS offering connectivity now? That's very interesting to know..... (edit: should clarify I know they provided all the CLEO services and still host/provide the cumbria services, just didn't realise we could go with them direct....) We have a smoothwall Solution in place and as we're a small school the CLEO increase isn't so much for us, but is still a noticeable one. As we've smoothwall in place already would this be of benefit to us (not meaning to be funny, I'm just curious! )? If it is then it's certainly something I'd be interested in attending!
  8. I've been brave (foolish) and just started pushing it out slowly - so far apart from trying to understand Capita's configuration screens it's gone ok until now (but then I haven't had to deploy anything yet)
  9. Managed updates in completely blank at the moment, regardless of whether it's All Products or SIMS Discover. I did log a call this morning and had an email to say it had been authorised - I'll give them another ring and check it definately has. Is that log event normal do you know Matt or something I'm going to have to look into? Cheers
  10. Morning! So having configured Solus 3 last week and assumed was all working, came in this morning, called and asked for Discover to be released by Solus 3 and have been emailed to say it has - but I can't see it. Before I go off I chase Capita up again I want to check my Solus 3 is working correctly. In the log files I have the following which I'm not sure whether it matters or not: 2011-06-06 09:13:42.9172|Info|Getting update list from CCS for customer (SITE ID REPLACED) 2011-06-06 09:13:42.9322|Info|GetPackages(): Sending get packages request : Correlation Id: 4f75b790-37b3-4910-8d29-4ad1b925e5e3 | Data: [Value : (SITE ID REPLACED)] 2011-06-06 09:13:43.8593|Info|Retrieved 0 updates for customer (SITE ID REPLACED) 2011-06-06 09:43:39.8119|Info|RetrieveAuditLogs(): Sending retrieve audit logs request : Correlation Id: b7ffe4dc-e28b-4ff3-83e7-5a42c15f97f2 | Data: [site Id : (SITEID REPLACED), Starting date: 06/06/2011 09:13:12] 2011-06-06 09:43:39.8119|Error|Run(): Unable to send audit log: No error given. 2011-06-06 09:43:40.7480|Info|runTryCode(): Package audit logs retrieved. The Unable to send Audit log occurs about every 30mins so I'm wondering if something isn't working somewhere? Any hints? Thanks!
  11. Thanks Matt! Thought it would be me being thick (but if the Solus guide said S:\Sims then it would have been easy!)
  12. Afternoon Picking up this Solus 3 manual to have a quick glance before I go it tomorrow, I've got 2 questions I'm hoping those of you who've done it can help with: 1. DMS Server definition: I'm assuming when defining this, where it asks for the installation path I give it the path to the actual installation, not the DMS folder (so f:\program files\sims\sims .net document server and not f:\docstorage)? 2. SIMS File Server - Stupid question now, I've never heard of this, the additional information just says the file drop location where SIMS Documents are stored on a network share. As far as I know we don't use this, is this likely or is it a random reference to another componant of SIMS I'm not recognising (like the SIMS share) Thanks!
  13. Looked this up a few months a go to see where we should be upto: Online reporting to parents - The Department for Education
  14. From my point of view: Advantages: Centrally hosted - not dependant on your internet connection for external access Backups managed centrally Security/patching handled externally Web Server security handled externally Disadvantages: Additional modules can't be added by yourself, need to be requested to CLEO No Single Sign-On Less general control (depending on what you want to achieve). Restoration needs to be requested by CLEO unless Course has been backed up manually. We don't have a huge use of moodle at the moment though, but it's gradually starting to grow.
  15. In Group Policy Preferences you can create/update/delete shortcuts and specify trhe location as to where they should go and then target as required. So for us we have a Shortcut specified in the User Preferneces section of the Staff GPO which has the following properties: Location gives you various options as to where you want it to appear. Then we have a Targeting option which does a file check to see if SIMS is installed on that machine and if so add's the icon to the desktop.
  16. What you'll need to do to stop the printers following when it falls out of scope is have a delete line for the printer above the update line for the printer which has the condition set for it. That way the printer is removed from the profile and then if the criteria matches it's then connected again I think.
  17. EES Core CAL pack on Standard School desktop pack includes the SCCM Client CAL as well.
  18. Using GPO preferences to create a shortcut on the desktop? I do this for Staff where SIMS is installed on the machine to place a shortcut on the desktop (admittedly Windows XP though)
  19. Client Side Extensions will still work without a problem, you'll just need to use a Windows vista/7/server 2008 machine to configure the GPO.
  20. Give File Recovery from PC Inspector - kostenlose Software fr die Datenrettung von CONVAR - Die Datenretter. a shot or I've attached another one I've used in the pastrest2514.zip
  21. I used the attached script to update our SIMS.ini when we migrated servers.updateSIMSini.vbs
  22. I'm quite impressed with Samsung at the moment for the last couple I've bought.
  23. We are a lot smaller then you so about 60 staff and 250 desktops and are currently licenced on XP as OEM licences and Office 2003/2007 as select and I'm trying to get upgraded to Windows 7 and Office 2010 and have proposed to shift to the EES agreement simply because over the course of 5 years (what I based the next release of Windows/Office will be on over the past release dates) the cost for us to pay the annual payment for EES would still not ammount to the initial cost for purchasing Office through Select. Then taking into account that a new version of Windows Server will likely be out in that 5 year period also and the replacement cycle for servers, that then throws in an upgrade cost for CALS too. In the proposal I've done I basically extrapolated the annual cost and a comparison of the select agreement over 5 years, detailing the annual cost (+ the variability for additional staff or additional computers) and then the total after 5/6 years where if you wanted to upgrade to the latest again then highlighting you have to duplicate the initial cost. If it was me with your desktop/staff numbers I would probably push for an EES agreement, the annual cost would probably be less then a quater of the cost of upgrading to Office 2010 and assuming you already have the appropriate CALS in place, but get a couple of quotes for both, price it up and base it off what is likely to happen over the course of 5 years and see which figure balances best.
  24. The advantage to using firefox over the normal browser is you can about:config and go and set a proxy!
  25. Don't think this will be the case as when it's happened to us there is no apparent life in the machine, but the USB ports on the front aren't damaged and shorting the connection are they? Like I say when this has happened to us the machine won't power on and the power light on the motherboard is normally flickering.
