If your using WSUS it should just reschedule the update for the next install window and do it automatically.

Knew I shouldn't have said anything. Just to update that I've just installed Photoshop CS5 on 3 machines with Premiere Elements on and now Elements won't start. It's a profile issue, but I can't track it down (as local profile users are unaffected)

We've had a few grumble about it, but we're now into our second year and they just get on with it. Now onto our 3rd cycle this year and all apart from 1 member of staff for the latest cycle have completed them on time. What made me smile the first year we ran profiles was that listening to a couple of members of staff talking about having done their reports but on principle not handing them in until 2 days after the deadline just to make a point - back fired and made me smile when the realisation that this wouldn't work because SIMS already had them dawned. The one bit of advice is you pass everything down to the next person in the line, so if it's the HoY who can't review them because several haven't completed them, then they chase them up. It's surprising how much more effective this approach is.

In the new servers we've recently bought I've gone for the Dell RD1000 drives for backups which work pretty well, looking to move to a d2d2t solution eventually or maybe just scattered NAS boxes - unsure as yet, but I haven't had a problem with HDD backups yet (touch wood)!

Well, under £1000 I might be able to weave it out of my budget in various ways, anything above that then I'm going to have to go and take it to the finance commitee to justify such an expense (£6k would really be a hard task to push! Unless I build up a few more favours and call them all in at once). As we're quite a small school anyway, everything need to be done on a smaller budget, so just do what I can. (example, it took over a year of pursuasion to the point where I had given up to be able to get smoothwall in)

Yeah I realise it's all huge ammounts of money, which is why when I've got this chunk of budget left I'm jumping on trying to replace the largest number I can within my limits. Here's the stupid question time now (which is where I'm getting all confused) - if further down the line I went further with the VLAN's in trying to put the servers on a seperate ones from the workstations, is that a good idea and would, if a WDS was multicasting, the 2810 be able to route between VLANs (if it needs to?)? I've just done this with Wordpress 3 for our media students. One blog installation and the Multisite setup and configured, useraccounts can then be allocated permissions to post/manage which ever blogs you like within that Network. The network (in all honesty) is a hodge podge of all sorts as it was gradually built up overtime (like everybody elses). Part of the point of replacing the switches is me getting some control and more understanding of it, while by upgrading to a 48 port switch rather then 24 port to increase the capacity available in the cabinet to get rid of the stupid ammount of desktop switches connected!) Currently, we have 1x24 port GB switch acting as the core effectively, which has 6 servers and a NAS box connected to it, 5 switches (about to go down to 3 when I replace them), ISP router and then 3 currently active fibre connections running through media converters to switch them to copper. a redundant fibre also runs to each of the 3 other cabinets. Fibre is the old style, but can never remember it's numbers, is 62.5 right? Budget would have to be cheap as possible, but would try and push for slightly more if we got a better switch (personally, the thought of paying over £600 makes me think twice, but that's my naievity in networking really and realise these things do cost a lot more! ) There's no fixed ammount to spend, it's just got to go in my pot with everything else so if it's going to cost more then I'll need to try and squirrel away even more next year (haha, should be interesting the way budgets are going)

Right, since I've been so mean with the budget this year and have a bit left over, I've decided to embark upon replacing our switches from unmanaged to managed. I've settled on going for Procurve and with the intention of implementing VLANs in the future at some point (hopefully soon so I can isolate the current wireless network from the rest of the traffic), need to start considering a new core switch. With this in mind (and hopefully moving towards a WDS setup in the future for multicast deployment) can anyone point me in the right direction of what sort of core switch I need to be looking for and what I'd be expecting to pay for it? Ta!

I think I've got this right, but it's worth checking: If you end the agreement at the end of the year, then you have to purchase the licences at the select agreement pricing. If you end an agreement partway through, the buyout cost is 1.75x the payment. Could be completely wrong though.

We've now scrapped Pinnacle 14 completely. I spent the whole of last term trying to get it to play ball, and not just with tiny little issues but big massive ones like not importing properly and playing clips back (for some reason it had major problems with losing codecs). I even took the drastic measure of wiping the whole suite and reinstalling from scratch, only for it to fail again in a week. We've now got Premiere Elements in, had it 2 weeks and I haven't heard a single word out of the media department since!

Bit late possibly, but on the restore screen, rather then trying to Restore by Resource, try Restore by Media, locate the media files which contain the files you want and trying to restore them that way. Still might not work, but might be worth a shot (going off version 12.5, so might be different in 11)

The minimum over 100 licences was initially mentioned to me, however I've since been told (as mentioned above) that it doesn't apply and that the minimum is 5. Haven't been able to get anyone else to confirm the 5 though (although slightly worrying that you've now mentioned the 100 figure that was first mentioned to me).

Another option which I've just tested on my machine here is going into the File Types, opening up DOC, copying all the settings for the Print option, Opening up XML, creating a New action and pasting all the Print settings from DOC into it, then it works how you want it. Just followed it up and some quite good news. Minimum order of 5 FTE Desktop units (so effectively 15 points I think) and a price of approx £40 per educational desktop suite.

I need to follow this up with a phone call, but an email I sent out just before I left has had a reply. I've been told that to set up an agreement, you need to purchase atleast 100 Education desktop pack (so an FTE of 100) and then any additional products you want/need are licenced on a per licence basis. I can understand the minimum order of 100 desktop licences, but then the second part seems to defeat the whole point of the FTE count (or am I missing the point?). Don't know if anyone else has heard anything along those lines yet or not?

So based off 200 hours, all our staff will be down as full time then. And actually, all our staff won't bring us up to the minimum 300 Unit's order for just the Desktop pack Edit: Never mind, worked out some extra goodies I can have to meet 300.

The Virtual PC will have a MAC address allocated to it and (assuming you use Microsoft Virtual PC, although I'm sure VMWare does the same) when no there's no valid boot device, such as CD or Hard drive, will try to PXE boot, just alter the bios boot order as you normally would or enter the boot menu I believe.

@FN-GM I had trouble upgrading a couple of Sophos Clients to the new end point protection because something was corrupt in the local install so wouldn't uninstall. The quick fix in the end was to copy the files from the sophos installpoint into the program files directory which then allowed the uninstall to take place, don't know if that will help or not.

We've got Xibo here, the server side I've got Ubuntu configured on (dare I admit it) Virtual PC 2007 and just power it up and down when I need to update the client. The intention is to farm the virtual server off on to another machine at some point in the future, but while we're getting going with it it's working pretty well for us.

Last email that was forwarded to me on the subject of Solus 3.2 was that it was going to be a phased rollout over 3 months, it's on my list of things to chase up. (We've had nothing to do with Solus 3 so far)

From what I understand, it's one that is supposed to pull the Linked Documents of a certain type out of SIMS and upload them for Parental Reporting so don't know of anyway of replicating the report (as I don't really understand how it's doing it). I'll maybe try Capita for the re-indexing patch Monday anyway so that I've ruled everything out my end. (although since they are stored in the DMS can't really see that making much difference either :/) Thanks

As a quick update, last night I copied the database and DMS to my test virtual machine which I admit won't be upto any usable spec other then my individual testing, but the groupcall export failed with the exact same error which suggests to me that it is either something in our data or something wrong with the groupcall report (or am I jumping to far ahead?)
