1. I have a DNS entry of 10.8.106.x in my DNS for the SIMS server which I can only assume is for Intouch and wondering if that is causing some of the problems I'm having with the slowdown - do you have a similar entry?
2. Right back on to this. @PhilNeal - if the OpenVPN service is still running and still connected, is that likely to mean that we are still using the VPN Service? Who is the best person to speak to about it or how can I move to VPN free?
3. Must have been a delay on some of the settings kicking in, rechecked it all this afternoon and I've had to leave Adult enabled and disable the Block google and Youtube HTTPS (fail-safe). I had disabled Disable Google Encrypted Search as well but that doesn't seem to have stopped it working now. I'm sure I changed something else at the same time but can't tell what it was now, maybe I ended up going through too many menus.
4. @PhilNeal just curious if you're aware then that exporting a marksheet from Assessment Manager has the UPN hidden in Column A? Edit: Actually, that answer's the OP's question about getting the UPN out with the data you want, but you'll need to heed the guidance above against using the UPN for anything.
5. I'll call tomorrow then, have finally worked out the 4 other options I've had to enable to make it work. Coming from a Smoothwall environment, lightspeed seems clunky and unintuitive and missing some of the basic features, like wildcards in search terms, I want to use. Thanks for trying to help @Edu-IT.
6. Nope, it just says Read Only. It's provided by BT Lancashire who I thought were getting better recently, this has just made me so angry with them though. Probably explains the reason it was setup the way it was, might go and see if I can get Smoothwall onsite. Should probably clarify that I am more annoyed because I know from Christmas I'm going to have to put up with this in more then one school from Christmas. Don't really understand why they have put it in the Adult category when there is a pefectly good audio-video category there which surely makes far more sense!
7. ... my Categories page is read only.....
8. Hi I've just been looking at the lightspeed filter for another school I've recently taken over and noticed that it's not really been doing any filtering. I've applied what I thought were reasonable filter restrictions and then discovered that I've blocked youTube because YouTube is classified as adult. Do I really need to allow the adult category to allow access to YouTube for Staff?
9. Yeah that's the same with me otherwise I would have probably got one a while back. You can tell it's Sunday reading through what I typed above, so many many errors...
10. Curious how people find the Nexus 6 - I like my Nexus 4 at the moment although it is continuing to have various problems (people not at the other end of the phone, random reboots/shutdowns) and not got to the problem of it. I like the Nexus range, but the Nexus 6 gives me the impression that it is too big - am I wrong? Hvaing got an Samsung S4 for work recently, I'm pretty impressed with it so if it was me I'd probably look at the S6, but then again I've never bought a phone with a contract, like others I've always kept them seperate so I can get the phone I want and a cheap contract at the same time. Part of that comes from I was on PAYG for a long time and it wasn't until Orange called up and offered me a £5 a month which gave me enough data that I switched over to contract as that was what was using all my PAYG credit up.

My Big Campus?

I've just recieved the ICT Group minutes through on the BTLS portal, from what I can gather lightspeed are moving my big campus away from there offering and so BTLS are supporting existing schools on it but not moving any new schools across to it and are currently looking at alternatives. The minutes are from May and supposedly an update was going to be released before the end of term, but nothing else has popped up on our portal that I can find.
12. They have released an updated Reports definition file, but unfortunately if you've customised any templates they all have the same error. We've had to rebuild half a dozen of ours already because we need them before the end of term...
13. Is DMS running correctly?
14. True, I'll give you that. Another thought along a similar chain @timbo343. Did you transfer the logins to SQL when you did the backup? Could be the passwords have all been reset. Our backup command: osql -S(server)\(instance) -E -n -Q"exec sims.sims.db_p_transfer_login" "F:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.sims2012\MSSQL\Binn\DbAttach.exe" /BACKUP /AUTO /SERVER=(server)\(instance) /DATABASE=sims /USER=sa /PASSWORD=(password)
15. True, but that said when the Capita engineer did our migration to 2008 we were left with a different backup method because dbattached crashed when schedule and B2B that didn't work for 3 weeks or so which I eventually worked out why (passed on to capita and they called me back a week later and told me my solution).... I only had one minor hiccup when I did the migration following the instructions. I would never say a receptionist could install a domain controller, you still need some level of skill and knowledge to do these things, however I had far more faith in my own abilities then someone else's at that time and I did leave the backup option there to get someone in to do it don't forget.
16. Well to be fair I stood over the engineers sholder when the 2005 -> 2008 migration was done and reading the documents and watching him didn't seem that complicated which was why I did it myself for 2008 -> 2012 and was quite happy with it. I also did it when I did so that if there was an issue I could roll the system back to where it was (snapshot and backup of the VM) and nobody would be any the wiser and if there was something major then the school was aware they would need ot pay for an engineer to come out. If you search My Account for migrating sql 2014, "Migrating SIMS FMS and Discover to SQL 2014 mini guide applicable to 7.160 onwards" should appear top of the documents and if you follow those steps you shouldn't have any issues. The only thing I had to tweak was our discover migration and our Solus 3 but a bit of common sense to each of those worked. (Can't remember the exact discover steps, the Solus 3 one was using SA details on the original server rather then leaving it as Windows auth which the guide didn't make clear or mention I believe). It's a little while back now since I did do the migration (Feb 2014, but doesn't seem that long ago...), but if you want to drop me an email with any questions more then happy to try and answer them.
17. you could try removing the mobile device from the mailbox too and see if that disables the sync and ability to access it too. ECP -> Recipents -> Find Mailbox -> then try either disable activesync/disable owa for devices and if you view details, you'll be able to delete the devices permission to access the mailbox too (or wipe data, but I'm not 100% sure if that's the device or just the mailbox data)
18. I think, but not tried it, that when you implement dirsync it should try to do a match based off the email address and then link the existing account up to dirsync. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2641663
19. Are you using the migration tool for moving the database? Admittedly I did 2008 to 2012 (both server and sql) but had no issues doing that. Installing SIMS wasn't particularly hard, I copied the files across from our existing share first and then ran the last full install iso and the upgrade iso's to our current SIMS version (since Solus 3 meant I didn't have an up to date setups folder) to refresh the setup files before going along and running SIMSINST to install the server and other required bits and pieces. Then did the migration after that.
20. It's what I would call the standard RDP access denied error, but I can't understand why.....
21. Produces the same issue. :/
22. Is there a setup/configuration guide available for Intouch? I've found one spurious setting whcih I'm not convinced is right but not knowing what the configuration should be I don't know (It's the sending and retrieving email server). I'm also not 100% sure how I can check if we're using the VPN solution or not? It seems to update using SIMS Service Manager, can I take it that that is therefore the case? I found one guide on My Account which mentions various fields relating to server farms, but I can't see those configuration options anywhere....
23. Hi all Wonder if someone can point me in the right direction on this one. I'm unable to logon to the DC via RDP on the network, when you try to login it says the usual you do not have permission to log in via RDP and must be a member of the RDP Users group. Thing is as far as I can tell I've done that. I've right clicked on Computer, gone to properties and added Administrator in there even though it has the usual message that domain\administrator already has access via RDP. Default Domain Controller policy looks right, rsop returns that Allow users to log on via RDP is still configured to Not Configured which is the default and nothing has been configured in the Default Domain Policy that I can see. anyone any other ideas as to what to try/check before I enable the Allow users to log on via RDP setting and adding Administrators in there? Just to clarify, I am using the domain admin account to try and connect via RDP.
24. Well from my very limited (one use of it) I'd agree with @cullingsh about it. Having to wait 30 - 90 seconds for it to load the first time I'm on InTouch in SIMS on the machine each day would annoy the hell out of me where as I could do the same with an email probably quicker. I can understand a large drop in usage if someone is moving around the school to different machines moving from an instant SIMS messaging system to one with a large pause and you can't use other parts of SIMS while it's loading. I will investigate further though when I get chance later on this week.
25. I have absolutely no idea if they've moved to the VPN free, I'll do a bit of investigating but no vpn was mentioned to me, only the SSM. Sounds like if there is a pause then that could be it. My first impression was that I was disappointed if that's the case.
