[sims] CAPITA pull Autumn 2014 Release - Why???!!!
howartp replied to tech_guy's topic in MIS Systems
Anyone know if the August 2 is ok? I tried it this morning and my SOLUS3 won't install the Autumn 2 Database (either the separate package or the one in the Autumn 2 Release), so the upgrade rolls back. I'm abandoning it until new year. Peter -
Has this sorted the slowness you mentioned at the start of the thread? I forwarded it to my colleague this morning who immediately replied with highlight on the ProCurve manager line. I know others use it successfully but whenever I install it, our network falls over in exactly the way you described.

Which MIS are you? There's a SIMS to Exchange timetable app on here somewhere; I followed it for a few days but we have a custom implementation already so haven't actually used it. Peter

Reverse identify a company by IP?
howartp replied to howartp's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We don't know who it is unfortunately, other than someone who must have been through our office for us to register him/her. Peter -
Reverse identify a company by IP?
howartp replied to howartp's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
That doesn't actually surprise me based on the name / industry practices of one of the companies I've found - which is the same reason I haven't tried ringing them to ask. -
Reverse identify a company by IP?

Sadly the MDM app isn't on / failed to install - I have resent it but they are either declining it (intentionally or otherwise) or it still isn't working/failing. -
Meraki - MDM - network locations - map wrong...
howartp replied to kennysarmy's topic in How do you do....it?
I've just tried putting our secondary range in as a separate entry and it has let me save it without complaining. The docs just say the same as the heading on the page, so I can't say definitely either way. Peter -
Reverse identify a company by IP?
howartp replied to howartp's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yes, but doing so will remove all our apps from it - I want to give them opportunity to backup any data in the apps first. (They can still re-install the apps from the app store and restore the data if backed up) Thanks; I never even thought about trying to browse the IP via HTTP, never mind scanning it for other ports. That's a good idea; I'll give that a go. Cheers. -
Hi, An iPad which belongs to an unidentified former employee is spending its daytime hours online at a business area of Leeds (as shown in our iPad MDM), but we don't know who the person is. Usually when we register a device, we allocate it to a person on the MDM, but as this is a personal device rather than school-owned, we seem to have missed this step. I have the public IP address of the company's internet access - 86.186.193.140 - which is a BT-issued IP; does anyone know of a way of tracing which company in that area this belongs to? I've tried a reverse ping (-a) on the domain name of two of the companies in the area, neither of which match; any other suggestions? (It's not densely populated; it's an outer area of Leeds) I know that residential IP addresses don't necessarily give away their location by IP address because maps show the head office of the ISP, but I can't see any BT offices around this location. Searching for Multiple Folders across Fileshares
howartp replied to error404's topic in Windows Server 2008
I use Excel as a swiss army knife for stuff like this. It's far more than just a spreadsheet programme if you know how to use it. I corrected 'mv' in an edit, but you obviously used the email alert with the old version in. Peter -
Searching for Multiple Folders across Fileshares
howartp replied to error404's topic in Windows Server 2008
Assuming the share still exists and depending exactly how tidy you want to be, you could do a brute force move of \\server1\username$ to \\newserver\archives\username 66% of the moves would silently fail, but it would achieve your aim of moving all the data to the target. Excel will do this for you. Username, formula 123456,HERE 987654,HERE Replace HERE with the following (copied down to all rows): =concatenate("move \\server1\", b1, "$ \\newserver\archives\", b1) Which will give you: move \\server1\123456$ \\newserver\archives\123456 move \\server1\987654$ \\newserver\archives\987654 Then highlight the formula column and copy/paste it into a CMD on whichever PC you want it to run on. Then repeat for server2 and server3. Peter -
Spoke to high up in our reseller this week. There are three Apple distributors in the UK that all resellers get their supplies from. Of those distributors, the first is in the process of getting their systems set up with DEP, but even then it will be a while before resellers get their IDs. If you order online direct from Apple, you will be the first to be able to use DEP in UK because their online systems are setup the same as US - ie, direct DEP transaction from end-user to Apple. It's the fact that UK uses Resellers and Distributors, adding two extra steps in the process, that is delaying the ability to use it as end-users. Annoying because yet again we'll miss out on Apple developments by a month or two. (Rolled out staff iPads just before VPP v2* became available, rolling out student iPads just before DEP...) (*License re-use rather than giving apps to users)

I know people are saying this, but my colleague pointed out to us (we're 1700 students) that actually, we get year 7 registered inside 2 hours, one class at a time at say 10 minute intervals - if we repeat this for 7 days the job is done and it isn't actually as bad as it sounds. A lot of the year 7 '2 hours' is taking them to the revals and getting the money on, which obviously we won't have to do. Peter

Just had a call from BioStore. They are (partially) aware of the Cunninghams situation - they know an email or phone call(s) have been made to schools claiming that BioStore wont support us any more now they've been bought by Jonas, so they are presuming that maybe Cunninghams are planning on launching their own product... The 'truth', from BioStore's perspective, is that they will continue to support any existing customers for no additional charge - we have paid the fees for BioStore to Cunninghams so should expect service - if Cunninghams don't pass that payment onto BioStore, that's an issue between them, not between us and Cunninghams or us and Biostore. Don't know if this helps or hinders Peter

Cool, never knew that - I do lots of AV work outside of school where that will be handy to know.

[sims] Multiple users completing marksheet concurrently?
howartp replied to howartp's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks. That's kinda what I thought, but worth asking anyway. Perer -
I've just been asked a question by our SIMS person - her boss who knew everything there is to know about SIMS retired a couple of months ago, so we're having to do our own research on things now! Is it possible for more than one person to complete a marksheet (Assessment > Marksheet entry) at the same time? We have a marksheet for Sixth Form option choices - when year 11 students meet with one of team to discuss their options for next year, the options are entered into this marksheet so we can subsequently do a report on it. However currently they use a google spreadsheet to enter the data, so multiple users can be editing the spreadsheet at the same time, then send it to our SIMS person to key in manually - she wants to know if they can actually fill in the live spreadsheet in assessment manager concurrently? Peter

We had site survey; some buildings are every zigzagged classroom across corridor, some are less, depending on build material.

I knew this was coming from a private source, and I have to say I'm looking forward to it. We will re-register fingers slowly over say a month before switching. I was considering 6 months ago moving to a.n.other supplier because I'm sick of the awful DB behind impact. Any time your data goes wrong, Cunninghams just hack the DB instead of correcting the reason for it going wrong. This is because they are stuck with CRB's impact. The new one runs a version of SQL - that presumably stores currency values as a value to two decimal places, not 12 decimal places. I'm hoping for neater integration with ParentPay and SIMS as well. If I can then query against the DB to display balances on our VLE to 2 decimal places, that's me sold. Peter

[ipad] Where do your students store their ipad work?
howartp replied to win's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
It's a GAFE account (Google Apps for Education), not personal or SSO'd to active directory. Peter -
Ooh, I must have been paying attention at some point then!

What version of vSphere are you on? IF I remember my VMware ICM training (Oct half term) correctly there was a change in VMDK size limits between 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5. That's just from recall though, so might be wrong. Peter

FoldR Well worth it for us. They also have google drive as of September, but we don't encourage uploading existing docs to there unless they need it for homework; google is for new and collaborative work primarily. Peter
