Ooh, interesting. Makes note to investigate.

Is that for accurate location of a student or misplaced staff iPad? Rather than "it is online and connected to AP 123"' does this triangulate on a map (based on signal strength?) to give more accurate positioning? Peter

@stgoodyeara, @timbo343, Does this give you visibility of what wifi-connected device is owned by which AD user, and who was viewing a particular site on a particular device at a given time? (Assuming they hadn't given their friends their personal iPhone etc) Our student wifi is off because I broke it - about ready to turn back on on Monday, but we don't want 800 kids coming with non-Apple devices to register onto the network on Monday morning. Our current method (which Tim is familiar with) is supposed to be DIY, but only Apple and latest Androids work - old Androids, Windows, Blackberries, don't work) If I can get student's online without having to manually do things for them, whilst still tracking who is doing what on which device, when and where, then I'd love to implement this. IE11 + Google Home Page problem???
howartp replied to a topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I've pushed out a package which simply deletes the "Smart INK" value from [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] - this stops it running at logon. I've not yet had negative feedback, but I only did it on Wednesday... Peter- 14 replies

Hi, We've just rolled out GAFE this summer. On about 60% of users, about 75% of the time, when you type a recipient or group into the 'sharing' box, it doesn't search and show you the matching recipients. The other users, and the rest of the time, the recipients show up as they should. In my office, I've never got it to go wrong, but I'm not governed by many policies at all - I logged on as another administrator in an IT suite with a sixth form class this morning and sometimes it showed up, sometimes it didn't - so it's not even fixed per user/pc/session. Attached is a screenshot of what should happen - any ideas what's causing it? Anyone else had or having this problem? We're on IE11 - I don't want to use Chrome because we also use Exchange which prefers IE. Peter

Are these SmartBoard machines? SmartInk causes this to happen on our Smartboard PCs for our new VLE. Peter- 14 replies

Are you suggesting if he'd emailed out before changing, it would have made any difference? We done domain migration this holiday. Emailed all staff and sixth form beforehand with new usernames and passwords. Got to have had 40 calls/emails saying "I know you emailed us beforehand, but I'm an idiot..."

Transcription Software - For typing up verbal dictated notes

Saw your subject line in the forums and was going to say 'NCH do something like that' - then read the content of your post. That's what I used several years ago, but as you say there may be others now. Peter -
If it's like the Avaya IP Office systems then I'm pretty sure the statement is correct - although our IP Office has 6 analogue lines used for faxes etc, I'm reasonably sure we have some regular handsets (such as a pair of DECTs from Argos) just plugged into digital extensions - the UI tells you whether it's analogue or digital on the end of it. Thus swapping an analogue phone for a digital one would be a simple unplug/replug as you've been told.

(Dad uses index finger for everything - left, right, scroll and one-finger typing!)

Index and Middle to click, either to scroll.

Hi, Anyone come across this one before? Deploy an agent in SOLUS (3.7), client pops up saying "installing in 2 minutes...", then 10 seconds after the 2 minutes is up (or you hit deploy now), the client says "No updates pending" and the SOLUS agent screen has the above status message. Peter

Been working through the weekend with arrangement that we'd text the nearest caretaker when leaving - we had a temporary key to one outside door to lockup, then they came back later to set alarm. Texted him 3.30 yesterday saying 'just leaving'. Got a call at 5pm - 'when did you send that text? You haven't just left have you cos I locked up and set the alarm an hour ago!' I'm glad he obviously checked we were not in our office and our cars had gone before locking up! Peter

Migrate to fresh new 2008 R2 domain and Exchange 2010, from current 2003 that's been upgraded in place since NT and beyond (or it seems like it!) - thus clearing all old GPOs and mess that's lurking around. RM weren't quite ready to support 2012 when they installed the empty DCs in January, so had to stick to 2008. Don't like Exchange 2013 so 2010 was my choice :-) That's about it - taking opportunity to tidy and re-approach shared area storage whilst we migrate it.

Woohoo! Great, I'll leave 3.7 alone then! Cheers. Peter

I've been asked to put Summer Release on tonight. I've not yet put either version of SOLUS 3.7 or any Summer 14 Release on. Does the Summer Release depend on SOLUS 3.7? Do I need to upgrade SOLUS or can I just push out Summer? The reason being, we're installing a new domain on Friday and wiping the lot, but my Data Manager needs to do some prep on SIMS before she comes back in for Exams hence why I gotta install it Peter

How many of the Brazilian players also won ASUS Tablets from you for fixing the results??

Just read your post on page 1 of this thread... 7-1 Brazil... Is there something suspicious going on here...?

Recomendations for TV models for Display screen use needed
howartp replied to robk's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
We've three models of LG. One of them is operated manually so I can't say what happens. One of them (of which we have three in sixth form) we use the built in timer. I bought the seemingly next replacement model when we got digital signage intending doing the same - to find they changed the firmware. If you set the clock, the timer on/off works - but they go to sleep after an hour. If you don't set the clock, they don't go to sleep, but neither does the timer work (obviously). I guess I'm saying, if you go LG check out whether it meets your needs before buying lots. They don't all behave the same. Peter Therefore we had to get mains-powered digital timers with battery to kept the time. -
But that still doesn't help anyone speed up this laborious task! There are half a dozen PAs who do their own messages; I only do whole-school or emergency ones most of the time.

Not sure if this works, but... @PhilNeal, please can we have list-import facilities in custom group definition in SIMS? And in Report Designer, have output to custom group as one of the options? :-) Peter
-
We do use custom SIMS groups for Trips and other recurring lists of users, but the interface for that isn't great either. Getting the data from the (DTP'd) PDF programme into a single column in Excel took minutes - I'm an advanced Excel user and regularly use Excel as an intermediate step for data manipulation. However if you put this example aside and think instead of the detention list for this week, or those who are helping with event_xyz next week, or those 85 students who live on the local isolated village where gas works are preventing the school bus getting there (yes, this week!), or other random lists of students which you get sent in an email either as linear text, word list or excel spreadsheet and how it's seconds of a job to get such data into a CSV - the manual interface of Schoolcomms just makes the job a royal pain. As I've indicated earlier, I am a programmer so I've a good understanding of how this might be implemented and it isn't too difficult. Peter
-
Me again... Nobody else seems to be asking for this, but I'm getting increasingly impatient for it. :-) Just sent out an email to all Prize Winners from year 9-10 then again from year 7-8. The list of names was in various grids in the programme (per award), which I quickly copied into Excel and parsed down so I had one name to a cell in one column, ready to copy manually into Schoolcomms. Took about 15/20 minutes to copy/paste 100 or so names from the excel sheet and match them; a CSV or list-import would have reduced this to 5 minutes. Then when I had to resend it because I forgot to change the time of the second event, and realised that you can't "reply" or "resend" to an email you've already sent in Schoolcomms and had to re-open the programme PDF, re-copy to Excel, re-parse and re-add everyone to Schoolcomms - I got fed up! Any news on the 'sophisticated functionality' you mention? Peter
-
Yeah, I wish I knew how to use it - I can get the capture, but reading what it tells me is another question. AV scans are all configured by Sophos Enterprise Console. The only task I didn't know about on there is the RM Server Backup which hasn't run since 2006 cos we don't use it any more As it happens, we've got a brand new domain and servers lined up on our VMs ready to switch at summer - to hopefully get rid of ancient gremlins which have upgraded from NT thru 2003 - but that doesn't help my students at this moment, and I'd like to solve the problem anyway! Hehe, good point - but no, the internet is fine. Peter
