We use Wordpad with no problems. The rest of the account is locked down to stop them using word or Internet etc, but nothing is modified in Wordpad

Has anyone else got the problem whereby adding a 'group' (synced from SIMS/etc) cannot be invited to a Class? It was a known bug back at release, but I just read an article that claims it was fixed at the same time the multiple-teachers feature came out. Peter

I do this sort of thing with a macro in Excel - every half term we export the IT classes from SIMS for import into MRBS. For example, the macro does a series of Replace commands to replace AMon:1, AMon:2, BTue:4 etc with a sortable key. Peter

For those who said switch is a faff (which I had wondered about) - would it be better to get the pass-through if I've capacity on the switches, then all VLANing is just regular switch config?

Hi, Just a heads up on this. There's a Google Gravity page hosted at http://vls.leeschools.net/UserContent/Misc/Google%20Gravity.htm My students have discovered if they search through this, it uses a deprecated API to call the search results from Google and display them - this API call isn't picked up by our smoothwall, and I guess several others. I suspect all/most Google Gravity pages use the same API calls. Therefore they can view pictures that they shouldn't be viewing. I'll be blocking that site, but also looking out for other Gravity pages. Peter

I'm running "Veeam Backup Essentials Enterprise 2 socket bundle for VMware", which is on one Backup server with 2x 6cores. It is backing up 3 ESX hosts with 2x 6cores in each. What's the fun in that??

My LEA visual support people know everything there is to know about IT security, and VNC is absolutely the answer in every secondary school in the country because it works fine in [school up the road]. Cough, splutter! - I'm sick of them telling me how to do my job, and offering to get [local school] to ring me and explain how to install VNC so their student can use it. I've done nothing yet, so will keep an eye on this thread, and will look at some of the apps suggested above. Peter

Initital backup is one full backup of everything, which it de-dupes as it goes. In theory you only ever need to do this once, though I know some/many users do a new full backup every so often, as everything in the future is essentially seeded from this. Each night, you do a differential. Then, say weekly, you tell Veeam to synthesise a new full backup after that night's differential. It takes the original full, then applies all the differentials to it - which should then match your live disks. You can either have forward or reverse incremental - there's benefits to both - one just makes a new differential file (so to restore to last Wednesday, Veeam essentially restores last weekends synthetic, plus last Monday and Tuesdays's differentials) and one transforms the differential into a full each time it runs, then recreates the differentials in backwards order (so to restore to last Wednesday, Veeam would essentially restore this weekends synthetic, then 'undo' changes made on Friday and Thursday's differentials). Yes, but I haven't completely got my head around it yet - we use tape, but I'm still doing manual tape backups of the backup files; my way is not the right way though. You should be able to tell Veeam to duplicate the backup jobs to USB disk either nightly or weekly. The core functionality of Veeam will, yes. You can schedule file backups from physical servers, but it doesn't give you all the full features of the VM implementation - I backup our telephone system and one shared folder on a NAS which doesn't change often, but needs to be backed up, using this part of Veeam as long as I know I need to treat it differently. We're talking B&R v8, yes. Tape support comes in one of the higher license levels, so make sure you check that out - I'm not sure if the same license is needed for the USB drive support. Peter
