I have got it to sync OU, user accounts, Groups ,user profiles. depends on whether you want to use groups for distribution lists. I have set it up pretty basic - each user and group in active directory has an emaill address and I sync that field to mail in google appps. Used mainly default settings in google apps sync.

Using it ok here although never got passwords syncing though there are supposed to be ways to get it going. Best thing is there is a simulate sync option - try this and look at the logs before doing an actual sync. Also in the settings set it so that its suspends users that are not present rather than deleting them - that way you won't lose any accounts and can manually delete accounts later if need be. Always found google support to be really good if you need them.

have you run out of addresses? - right click scope on dhcp server and select display statistics to see if you have any left to allocate

Do you have to take any notice of what the LA say even if you are not an academy? Don't know how they can say it is not secure - it is the same product as google apps for business used by thousands of firms worldwide including legal companies.

I would look at Google apps or Office 365 - both free and saves hassle and cost of running your own exchange server. Went from Exchange server 2003 to Google apps here with no problems - Google support is very good and you can still use Outlook if you want with sync tool.

I thought smoothwall could do the authentication with AD accounts - that's what I am planning here but not got round to setting it up yet.

logged a call 20/11/2012 - -got a call reference number - have never heard back since - managed to solve it in a different way luckily but they should have come back to me. When I had an urgent problem had to ring account manager to get it bumped up to high priority to get it looked at. Their support needs sorting out.

I would look at guest wireless and BYOD for sixth form at least - this would be easier of you had managed wireless system such as ruckus. Curriiculum will be changing as well as GCSEs are phased out which may impact on resources needed depending on which new courses they take up.

have you tried iis reset? - sometimes used to work - a long while since I used RM stuff.

I know you are in primary but for secondary the changes to curriculum - scrapping GCSE , moving IT towards programming etc. will impact on different department needs. Also tablets will become more prevalent as developers focus on apps rather than traditional software.

That seems to work - not sure why I need to do that or if there is another way in case DNS address changes but thanks at least it gets it working.

Have a DNS problem that I can't get my brain around. All internet working ok except connection to our own website http://www.wvacademy.org - hosted externally by embc. Get Unable to determine IP address from host name for http://www.wvacademy.org when I try to browse to site. nslookup gets "can't find http://www.wvacademy.org Non-existent domain" - from our internal dns server/domain controller I am guessing it is because our domain is called wvacademy.org and so it is not trying to resolve the name through the forwarders. Not sure what I can change in DNS to get it to resolve? Website is working ok and can access externally.

I did this over the summer - Active directory on 2003 schema - nerve-wracking but went ok - followed some guides found by searching on here mainly. All machines have to be restarted twice - problems if you have laptops away from network - i took staff laptops off domain before they went for summer and joined them to new domain. Is a summer job really - you need time in case things go wrong. Had a few profile issues but not many.

We use google apps and google apps sync so that staff can still use outllook - works pretty well.

We have had similar problems this week - it works in chrome but not in internet explorer for students. As an admin it works though - have tried latest flash. This is on Windows 7 - internet through embc. Sorry can't be of more help but would be interested in finding a solution.

Can see that you can hide users - that is not the same as having 2 directories - one for staff and one for students?

We have google apps but there is only one global address list - How do you segregate OU's within address list?

Not running internal proxy or firewall. Still having random machines with this problem - guessing it is one rogue proxy server at embc.

Hi thanks for reply - we are still using old proxy.embc.uk.com proxy but still having a lot of problems connecting to https://www.google.com - afffecting several machines at random every day - different subnets.

As plexer says best way is probably something like Smoothwall SWG-1200 with transparent proxy for the guest Vlan - you can have open access but force them to login with active directory username and password via smoothwall settings. Will be setting it up here soon.

Anyone else having problems with google apps on embc? We have some users where google apps sync between outlook 2010 and gmail stops syncing and they can't access the secure site https://www.google.co.uk Forcing the internal IP to a different IP fixes it - in the past this has been caused by one faulty proxy server at embc - but they don't seem to accept this and are struggling to solve it which is causing us problems.

Sharing this tip that we came across- in a publisher document - right click a photo - format - compress - there is an option to "apply to all pictures in the document" - will scan the document and check/resize all photos. This can dramatically reduce the file size when you need to upload them on to a VLE etc.
