Hi, Seeing as this has turned into a bit of a 'complain about Ranger' post- I have found the service has gone since they sold out to RM - I was having a conversation via a guy to get my Windows 7 Ranger working correctly recently, then when communications stopped I found out the guy had left the company and they wouldn't help becuase my licence had expired - they hadn't sent me a renewal request or anything. Someone said the sales rep would call me, but they didn't. I'm going down the GPO route - shame though, Ranger was good while it lasted.

Hi all, I was just wondering what percentage of schools use Google Apps, Microsoft 365 or locally installed Microsoft. I'd appreciate it if you could just let me know what you use. it would be interesting to know if you use Google Apps - what do the staff use? Thanks in advance!

Hi guys and girls, I am using Smoothwall as a web filtering solution in our school and wondered what other schools do in the way of filtering - I filter out all the general stuff (porn, terrorism, intolerance, drugs), and leave out everything else (abortion, acohol and tabacco etc.) but then I have some members of staff saying theat the pupils are doing a project on maruajana or the twin towers, so things get blocked. Do people have a really minimal filter setting, or do you really tie things down? Imagine 11-18 year olds (the juniors have a really tight filter). Please try and reply how tight (or not) your filters are, so when I stand up in front of everyone and say 'this is what everyone else does', I'm not talking out of my !? Cheers, and thanks.

Hi - I hope it wasn't you that decided to go ahead with the ipads before planning, I think it's a bit daft, but we're here to help, so... Just so you know, i'm not an expert, I'm against implementing these in our school, but here's my input: Firstly, i'd try and get on a Mobility or Education type course from Apple, I went on one (only one day) and found it very helpful for figuring out how to manage them. If you can't get on a course, you need to get an Apple laptop with OSX Lion on it, as there's a configuration app on there for iPads (in bulk), which allows for (for example) kiosk mode, which stops any configuration by the user etc. You really need to tie these down before you allow them into general population! As for Apple IDs and apps, you can create a bunch of ids in the school name, then gift the apps to those ids. Hope that helps in some way!

Sounds to me that the laptop can't confirm the account with the AD - it's a new account, so hasn't cached it yet. Rather than a useful, "I can't talk to the AD so please try something else", it just says "username or password incorrect". Make sure the laptop can speak to the domain!

Hi - I need someone to say i'm not being dim (or if you do, tell me what the hell i've done wrong!) Anyway, I have a Zyxel WAP 3205 access point (in access point mode) connected to the network and transmitting fine. I have another 3205 in an outside classroom, working in Universal Repeater mode, so the teacher can a) plug her desktop in and b) use her pda wirelessly! The outside point connects to the inside point fine (using WPA2) and the points seem to 'talk'. However, no matter what I do, the clients just don't seem to pick up a DHCP addess, even though they connect to the outside point fine. No-one knows of a mad, hidden, DHCP relay setting or anything like that do they!? I'm feeling like i'm going to have to hard-wire the damn classroom, as this is driving me nuts!

Thanks guys/girls, The day after posing this I went down with tonsillitis, so I haven't had a chance to check these out - from memory I am using WPA2 with TKIP. I'll have a rummage (albeit remotely from my death-bed) tomorrow. Cheers.

Hi. Has anyone had any issues connecting iPads to Cisco (in particular 1142N) wireless points with WPA2 authentication? All other devices work fine, just some (not all) iPads say 'connecting' closely followed by 'disconnected'. Any instant ideas anyone!?

Hi - I'm having a bad day and can't get something working...I suspect i'm being thick (no agreements please - I'm fed up!) Anyway, I have been told my new external IP addresses (for my new router) are : Subnet: 212.118.125.8 Mask: 255.255.255.248 Computer Range: 212.118.125.10 to 212.118.125.14 Broadcast: 212.118.125.15 The internal IP of the router is 10.113.121.15 If I go to What Is My IP Address - Shows Your IP Address it comes up as 212.118.127.210! Is this all correct, because no matter what configuration I do, I can’t access my domain from outside, via web, VPN or SMTP!? Are there any pointers you can give me at all!? My gut reaction say's that i've been given duff info, but i've been around in circles so much i'm beginning to doubt myself!

I somehow doubt it - but if they do - well - you'll have to find me first! (i may have been taken captive!)
