Afternoon, Here's my problem, - Students have redirected desktops, Staff do not. - The folder that contains the icons for the students desktop is read only so they cannot delete or add icons. - The redirected desktop folder contains shortcuts to My Computer, My Documents and IE. - The default user profile in netlogon has no desktop icons. It used to have desktop icons for My Computer but when a new student is created, they were able to delete the My Computer icon because it was not in the redirected folder which is read only, which in turn meant that they couldn't access the drives. - When a member of staff logs in for the first time, they don't have an icon for My Computer because they don't have redirected desktop. My question(s) is, can I stop the student users from deleting icons that aren't redirected such as My Computer, or is there a way I can give the staff a My Computer icon without having to recreate the default user profile in netlogon, or can I create a default user for students and another for staff. Hi folks. I am currently working on getting rid of our huge logon script that used to do everything, drive mappings, printers, display properties, folder redirection, desktop icons etc etc. I printed it out earlier and it was 20 A4 pages worth of kix script (not set up by me) I am almost there and am really happy with how its gone. There are one or two things that I need to nail down to get it just right. So here are a couple of things that I cant find a definitive answer to on the web. 1. What is the best way to create a new default user profile to go in NETLOGON? We use roaming profiles and when a user logs on for the first time, they recieve this profile and I would like to make a few changes? 2. I have redirected most things including desktop, start menu, and application data. Should there be folders be in the default user profile in NETLOGON called desktop, start menu, application data? 3. When a user logs on to a computer for the first time, it caches the profile in the Document and Settings folder. Should this folder have desktop, start menu and application data folders even if they are being redirected? 4. The current default user profile in NETLOGON, and therefore all new profiles, has no NTUSER.dat or .man file. Is this a problem? what are the ramifications of this? 5. On my W7 machine, if I log in to the Docs and Settings folder of another machine (XP), and I view the properties of a new cached user profile, the size is about 6mb. If i then click delete, it says deleting and displays that the folders is about 120mb? Is this the same for everyone or just me? Surely the cached profiles cant be that size. especially as I only created the user about 10 minutes before and logged in once to the machine. 6. Redirected application data for all users to a shared. Is it better to redirect everyone to one folder (similar to Start Menu/Desktop) or allow each user to have their own Application Data? All clients are XP, server is 2008 Sorry for the mass of questions, I hope I have explained myself enough. If you can answer some or all of them I will be very grateful. James

Dont do it!! Think of it this way. im sure no one has ever been in trouble for not 'networking' with students outside of school.

+1 again. I use it all the time and its really simple to use. and free.

I installed VNC and to be honest I was surprised at how easy it was. As mentioned above, the only downside is that everyone can see what your doing when your editing the file. Not too much of a problem because it doesnt happen all that often. Thanks for all your help guys!

Yeah, Xibo is a project for over the summer. Dont have time to fully test it and get it set up properly now.

Im not saying that I dont want to use it, Im saying that I do want to use RDP. Its already built in, its simple to use and I dont have to install anymore software. Im not sure you can say that that RDP wasnt designed for the job, its called remote desktop. thats exactly what it is designed for.

i knew you were all going to say VNC. I know I can use VNC but as you said FN-GM, thats not the answer I wanted. Does anyone else have an idea??

morning all, Our digital sinage is basically a powerpoint presentation that runs on a loop. The person who is responsible for the presentation is currently using dameware to remotely connect to the machine, edit the presentaion and then log off. To cut a long story short, we cant use dameware anymore. We can use remote desktop to connect to the machine but whenever we close the RDP session, it locks the machine. This is no good because we need it to still show the presentation. How can I stop the remote desktop from locking the workstation when the session ends?? TIA James

I can confim that the baking trick works. I did it yesterday. I was a bit unsure but thought, it wasnt working anyway, why not give it a try. 10 mins at 175 degrees. Popped it back in the printer and its working again!! Amazing!

if your classrooms are 192.168.100.0, 192.168.101.0, 192.168.102.0, and your dhcp scope is 192.168.105.1 - 192.168.109.254 this is ok because they dont overlap. If they do overlap, you will need to create the scope and then an exclusion
