  1. Morning all, I would like to set up a VPN solution here for staff to access their documents/and sims. We are with SWGFL and I have to submit a change request to them. I want to just get this clear in my head before I do. I have set up a VPN server here with a static IP. Am I right in thinking that I need to get SWGFL to give me a public IP address and allow all traffic on port 1701, 1723 and forward it to our internal IP address of the VPN server?? Many Thanks James
  2. thinking ahead for next time, I would create a folder called Files, or Work or similar inside each of the students folders that they can use to save work then all you would need to do is copy the entire folder structure to your backup then do a search for folders called work and delete them, therefore keeping the root folder of the student intact. i.e create \\hosea\d$\users\students\%username%\Files In AD alter the location of the the home drive to this new folder and it wont look any different to the students.
  3. As long as you keep the same folder names, it shouldn't be a problem.
  4. Would it be quicker to move them and then recreate the folders?
  5. No idea how it happened. I have found a way to restore to a different location so I will restore the sysvol folder to a different drive and then copy the policies back one by one. Does that sound ok??
  6. Ive checked for the folders for the unique ID and the folder is missing. Ive also searched already. I would have just restored the individual folders but backupexec cannot restore individual folders from the system state. The only option I have is to restore the SYSVOL folder. What are the implications of doing this?
  7. yes, we have 2 and they are missing from both. Checked that already.
  8. Hi guys, came in thismorning to find that none of the gpp's are working along with a few other settings. Checked group policy and it says that it is unable to find the correct policy in the SYSVOL folder. Checked the backups and the last backup has been running for 35 hours! I guess the problems are related but not sure how yet. So I cancelled the backup and now I need to restore the policies in the SYSVOL folder. We use BackupEXEC 12.5 and there is an option to restore the system state sysvol folder. IS THAT I I NEED TO DO?? DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE?? never had to restore any system state data before.
  9. dont panic!! Ive done it now. It was really easy. Downloaded ADRestore from sysinternals, ran the file from the command line searching for all gsgstudents with the -r to restore it. Job Done!!
  10. We dont have r2. just the standard edition of 2008
  11. Hi guys. Had a bit of a problem here today, the security group we call gsgStudents which contains all students has disappeared from AD. I know that it is possible to restore objects but does anyone have a good guide or method to do this? we have Server 2008 Is there anything that I need to be aware of? Many Thanks James
  12. my predecessor tried once and I think they tried to charge a stupid amount of money to open ports and forward to our school. To be honest, it would only be for SLT and me probably. about 6 people
  13. Hi guys, I might be asking something completely stupid here but here goes anyway... Is there a way of users accessing files remotely (VPN) without the school having a public IP address??? We have an internet connection through the LA. If I use something like Teamviewer I can set up a VPN with that. So i guess it is possible but what software can I use thats a bit more 'substantial'. Thanks James
  14. Can you buy it yourself and claim back the money. Its only 4 quid.
  15. I can hardly see the screen if I turn the brightness down to the lowest. Why would you want to do that? If it solves the problem, could you plug the laptop into an external monitor and control the brightness via that?
  16. you shouldnt be using the domain administrator account. create a new account with a different name and give it the rights to perform administrator actions, then disable the administrator account. If you need to do anything with this account, you can use Run As...
  17. Fixed it. I have been using group policy preferences to deploy printers and one of the printers I tested on was a 1022n. When it installed there must have been a conflict in the drivers. I removed all drivers from the computer and reinstalled the original 1022 PnP driver and it has sorted the problem! Bl**dy printer drivers!
  18. everything, wont even print a test page
  19. BUMP Anyone???????
  20. Having looked back through the folder redirection policy, I had stupidly set it to redirect to the local profile!! What a helmet!!
  21. It's not mandatory profiles. It's roaming. I think the problem is a combination of what you are both saying. The staff do not have access to the c drive and I need to redirect it to the My Documents to their folder. Do I need to redirect them all to the same location and use \\servername\%username%$ Thanks guys!
  22. Hi All, I have just created a new default profile for the network and it seems to be working perfectly apart from one thing. When staff log in, they are unable to access my documents and they have a message saying This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Is there anything that I am missing that's obvious!? Thanks James
  23. this is what I have done. I have created a new default user profile and created a shortcut to My Computer in the local desktop folder and because the students have a redirected desktop, I have created a shortcut to My Computer in the redirected desktop folder. This was staff get the shortcut from their profile and Students get it from the redirected folders.
  24. Hi all, I have a problem here, the heads PA has a Laserjet 1022 that was working until about 2 days ago, now when she prints all she gets is a single vertical line that runs down the page. It starts about an inch from the top and finishes the same at the bottom. See attached picture. I have reinstalled the printer, updated drivers, tried the printer on another computer, swapped the USB lead, and also tried another 1022 that I had in the cupboard and they are both having the same problem. However, if I press the 'Go' button on the printer control panel, it prints a standard HP demo page. Does anyone have any ideas??
  25. No, If they delete the icons, they are not there again at next logon. Its most annoying. I can find policies to hide icons but not to show icons.
