We're in our second year of running it for Y7 intake, there is a lot of setup work but the support team is pretty good. The data we collected prior to enrolment needed to be cleaned up as there is little in the way of forced formatting - phone numbers and medical practices in particular are prone to errors. Where it really scores well is the import to SIMS - much better cross-checking against existing contacts than other tools we have used. However, if we were not using SIMS I think we'd drop it and revert to MS Forms. It's a lot of money just for the import. We also used it for 6th Form applications and enrolment - for this it is really good at gathering application data, arranging interviews and taster days, options etc. We await the key moment when the GCSE results come out and 350+ applicants need to login and add their actual grades!

I always start the new year on 1st Sept and add in INSET / holidays etc to pad out until the start of the term; we then bring in Y7 & Y12 on day one with everyone else starting on day two. Never had a problem doing this.

Having previously set our account to "Basic" we've now had another message about invoicing us for £360 per year for the "premium" version, so I've had to go into the portal and once again reduce this to basic. Keep your eyes peeled!

The subject code comes from T6, you can set the qualification level in T6 if you like, but it is also settable in SIMS via Course Manager

Hi Doug, There's no straight forward way of doing this, it's not as easy as uploading a CSV file that some applications allow. You'll have to first convert your data into an ATF file - there are standard schemas for this online. You can then use Excel's export to XML feature to generate the ATF from your data. I used this method a couple of years ago, as a last resort, and it worked but it was not perfect and a lot of data had to be added one-by-one in SIMS afterwards (particularly additional contacts). Alternately, you can scour the internet for tools others have made to do this - IIRC there is a CTF tool from a guy called Mark Coyles that looked pretty good but I've not tried it yet. Using ATFs means the applicants data will go into an application group where you can manage the ongoing process, removing those who withdraw etc, and it does not create the student record until you admit them. If you use CTFs I think this will create the student record straight away, and you will have to delete those that withdraw etc. Both these methods are free / low cost - we ended up buying Admissions+ from Applicaa to manage our enrolment processes (6th Form and Y7), this offers a lot more than just importing into SIMS though.

You can edit the dates of the academic year and there should be no problem with this if you do it now before the year starts. Starting the academic year in August should not cause any problems, for Sixth Form funding purposes (i.e. Course Manager) it is based on the year starting 1st August.

I believe that the issue is caused by the Governor Review date being in the summer term whereas the census is only looking at spring term events. You should be able to put a note on COLLECT to cover this. EDIT - the census only looked at exclusion data up to 9/4/23

Good morning, One of our users is experiencing very strange behaviour when running SIMS reports. It appears that regardless of the report she chooses to run she always gets the same, completely unrelated, output. Has anyone seen this before? We've tried restarting her machine to no avail, could it be a cache on the SIMSserver itself? Thanks

For the census the special section to record these children is enough. I don't use the welfare section for anything other than known, current in care details. I do add them is as PP in the Additional Information section and put in a note that they are PLAC

NDMA is still a thing - but it's very quiet I use a few Facebook groups - School Data Management & Sixth Form Data and Funding being the main ones. There are some support forums for specific tools / software - SISRA are behind some of the Facebook stuff for instance; dare I say it, the ESS / SIMS support network is still pretty good.
