As much as I would like to agree with @PhilNeal and would love that to be the role you'll be walking into, I think you'll find it to actually be about the management of the information systems rather than data and data use policies and management. I have never seen (and I have been in lots of schools now!) data managers being able to act upon the information they have. At best they can be asked to provide evidence to support SLT policy making and changes. I'm not saying this is the case, just that I have not come across that yet. I should be, but rarely is! -

Thanks for the nod @vikpaw Aspen MIS is a very flexible system designed to meet a raft of need without being tied to one sector or type of establishment. It's a handy thing when your product has a parent and student portal built in at no extra cost... In fact it is handy being web based in the first place!

I investigated this for a previous independent school. We spend a long time looking at this and what we could modify to make it usable. Our findings were you could use it happily as a simple data store to collect update and retrieve details, but other than that not much. It actually suited us for a little while like that too, but soon found the limitations difficult. We had to add a lot of UDFs and it was very static. You've actually given me a couple of thoughts for Aspen MIS talking about this... ta very much!

+1 for SQL backup via SSMS. Although remember due to SIMS' weird way of managing permissions if you restore using this backup usually user account passwords are screwed up. Peeps on here know a script to fix this though.

That cleared that up! Lawrence, is the physical sync not available because it is an apple device (Apple restrictions) or something you have not looked into/built?
