Very interesting thread Basically it does cost time (and therefore money) to do the disconnect as Paul says. So fair enough in todays market economy where no-one has a free pot of money to go and charge a school for it. The issues then get down to contractual stipulations (and I'm thinking that all words used will be very wooly and vague as per normal ) and flat rate/average or true cost for each school. Now if your 20 miles into the hill through 3 radio links, then your going to want the flat rate if you live in Preston city centre with ADSL/Fibre - then you'd want the true cost. Just install it on any computer then treat the c:\program files (or x86) \Scratch folder as the unzipped folder and copy it your network share. Or of course, just install it on all the clients - the network share option is just useful is playing with the Scratch.ini file but of ocurse you get all the downsides of running progs over a network so YMMV Simon

And how many teachers complete their work in school time at school? Lets be real here please - its not a 9-5 job and the work doesn't all take place in school - a lot takes place at home. As a school, you decide what each worker provides - this is a decision - they can do what they want My daughter goes to work in a pub, she has to wear shoes and she has to get there She doesn't have to provide a top -the pub chain do - she doesn't have to take anything else. This is pretty much standard practice - you get to work - your work provides you with the tools to do the job in my previous job - I had to get to work - I then had to get up 1000ft hills - they provided me with a 4Wheel drive vehicle and a laptop and a mobile and a hard hat and overalls and protective shoes. Decide what you want your workers to do and don't make them spend their own money on doing your work for you Simon

My attitude is <3 years and no chance of imminent laptop replacement - replace battery - usually about £40 - value for money - I always suceeed in getting this approved >4 years old - don't grey area in-between Simon

When you do this - can you simply tell Apple Configurator to do it and walk away? Will it retain each IPads name or do you have to go and change it back manually like with simply using ITunes on a PC? Simon

How is it brilliant if anytime you push an app out you have to go to each IPad and enter the password? That's just a non-starter surely for classroom management (fine for teachers/staff IPads of course) What am I missing here? Simon

I fill mine up but then I use it a lot as a video camera and that just eats GB - if you just use one as a phone, a few mp3s and the occaisional pic then 8GB is fine But once you start on videos (either recording or downloading) then you soon run out Simon

So Mac Mini Server running Apple Configurator will let me install apps once? And then all IPads can be sync'd up overnight? What about icon/screen layouts - is this controllable from the Configurator? Basically don't want the school to spend another >£500 if it doesn't do much more than Itunes on a PC Simon

@jammers I've setup the Meraki system - its fine but how do I "sync" with it. I can see how to push apps out but since that requires typing in the password for each app on each IPad its still a quite a bit of work todo - especially on our learning curve where we'll be trying out lots of different things. Years ago I experimented with setting up my working server (Server2) as a VM on a real W2k3 server (Server3). All went well - doesn't run very fast but no matter in a small primary. So everything is running on Server 2 VM (when I say everything I mean DHCP/DNS/File and print serving - non of that AD nonsese ) But one thing that doesn't 't work is that I can't access any shared folders on Server3 either from client PCs or Server2 (Never been a problem - I jsut used it as a host - but now I'd like to run a separate dropbox account on it and share it out) it doesn't show up in any network places. BTW It is just setup as File Server role. Any ideas as to what simple setting I need to turn on to get it to appear on the network? Simon
