Who knows - Google has a wall of silence on the issue. No standard Android device will run any proxy program but if your root your device I believe that they will. As said, Cyanogen has a proxy facility but its too naff to use (you have to switch it off and on - can't automatically associate it with school APs/switch it off for home ) Its the one big gaping hole in Android If your 3G coverage in school is OK then in practice you won't actually need it but if not.... Just to add in, I was down in Surrey for the past few days and on Monday evening/Tuesday day I had very erratic behaviour on my phone with the signal - couldn't ring out (ven though plenty of signal bars showing) texts not sending/receiving and most of time with no data signal showing. It seems OK again now. I thought it was just my phone thinking that London was in a different country and wasn't enabled for international roaming Si

Had a big outage on Monday when a schools router failed due to mains outages - got that sorted (Well CLEO Engineer did ) Afterwards a couple of people complaining that Word was crashing on them - it worked on one machine I tried so I thought no major problem and said I'll be back later in week to look at it. Today, everyone complaining that word doesn't work, testbase doesn't work and Easiteach (needed for Abacus) doesn't work. I'm starting to think I've a nasty little virus hidden away. So downloading Malawarebytes to see if it can find anything when I found one teacher who said everythings working fine for them. Checked her machine and noticed that she wasn't defaulted to laser (via PCL driver) she was defaulted to the laser (via Postscript driver). (I've some linux netbooks that need Postscript based printer) Turns out server laser PCL driver print queue was causing all the problems. It won't delete either so I've recreated another one (called it LaserB and deployed it as default for everyone- all problems gone. Si BTW Anyone know how to manually remove an errant server printer/queue so it doesn't appear anymore?

BTW If there are just a 2-3 computers in a class, its quite common to use an AP as the class switch - saves money and complexity. Also, Its not a completely daft idea to have half the laptops connecting to one AP and half to another as its a very simple way of reducing the workload on the APs. regards Simon

I don't know - but I think that all traffic (other than the local lan stuff) gets "routed" to my port 24. Did a tracert of 192.168.123.231 and it seems to route beyond me to to other 10.xxx.yyy.zzz devices before going into the request time out zone. I just had this mad idea spring to mind. In Lancs land we have a Cisco 3750 thingy (I call it a router - no idea if it is really-its supplied and maintained by CLEO -) Ports 1-10 are for curric use Ports 11-13 are for admin network curric net wil be something like 10.9.4.0/24 admin will be 10.134.7/24 Now Port 24 is the I/O port connected to the CLEO SDSL to Ethernet box. What do you think the chances are of sticking a little 4-port switch in the path and connecting up a networked photocopier so that it can be printed to from both networks? Non-starter? Si

I just have one pupil logon/computer no password but with an startup script that displays a splash screen like sparkeh where the children select which class they are in and the P: drive gets mapped to that folder. This prevents folders going missing between classes but not within a class (but it doesn't take long to search for say elliej and find where its been moved to) Only twice in 8 years have I had to go the backup to retrieve a pupils deleted folder. But the schools main problem is obviously a lack of coherent approach to their ICT support (technican - how may hours?/Contractor - how often and why do they have to keep rebuilding the server???? and now yourself (Part-time/unpaid self confessed newbie ) But as we all know, the chances of the situation being sorted properly will be close to zero Anyway - back on with technicals. If you go with users having restricted logons then you will reduce risk of them "mucking things up" and reduce risk slightly of a bad virus whizzing round your network. But you will have an load of grief trying to get primary all your primary educational software to work properly and since there are no experts around most of the time - leave them as admin. regards Simon PS I gave up several decades ago on power saving - if you get it working - let me know how you did it - otherwise I wouldn't bother with it

A NM job can cover a wide range from IT Director to being the job name of the senior tech in charge of the network. Even I consider myself a Network Manager at times when I'm specifiying/deploying new ICT purchases for 16K I'd expect an IT Director to be responsible for purchasing/budgets and speak manglement but not actually get involved in changing a printer cartridge whereas a NM should at least know where they are kept and how to replace a projector Si

BTW on top of that we have a "managed service charge" (which I think pays for our help desk/email and web services) Simon
