    If I load the site up in Internet Explorer it works, so I'm not sure that's the issue.

    One of our teachers has reported (and we have reproduced the issue in our office) that when a link to CWA's web site, https://cwa.ac.uk/ is embedded in a PowerPoint, clicking on it during the slide show gives the following error: "The Internet site reports that a connection was established but the data is not available". We are using Windows 10 LTSC 1809 and Office 2016. Can anyone suggest what might cause this issue? Other websites work just fine when linked from PowerPoint.

    When looking into the Previous Versions of the home directory of various user accounts to recover work that has been reported as being lost, the first time I try to access one I've been receiving this kind of error: The Previous Version of "(garbage characters)" from (date and time of previous version) no longer exists. Select a different version and try again. On subsequent attempts to access the same Previous Version, it works and I am able to access the files. The fact that I am seeing this error every time work has been reported as being lost suggests that there is a problem with Previous Versions that is causing this. What's been tried so far: Rebooting the server out of hours (previously it had not been rebooted since July) Checking event logs on the server - couldn't find any VSS or VolSnap related events vssadmin list writers - no error states mentioned Can anyone suggest any further (non-destructive) steps we can take to troubleshoot or diagnose this? The server in question is Windows Server 2012 R2 and the clients are Windows 10 1809 LTSC running Office 2016.     OK but if the record was scavenged while the PC was off/not connected to the network, then surely it should come back once the PC is turned back on? This is not happening automatically.

    We seem to be having a problem with some (but not all) of our Windows 10 LTSC 1809 clients, where they are not getting registered in DNS. We're able to manually register affected machines using ipconfig /registerdns but it would be useful to be able to troubleshoot this and find out why it is happening. Can anyone suggest what we might try?

    Does DesktopApplicationID still work on 1607, or do we need to have separate XML files for 1607 and 1809? Also, does anyone have any ideas why in 1809 we might be seeing three broken tiles coming up when we don't have any tiles configured? Looking at them they seem to be Edge (which I didn't think was in LTSC?), Contact Support and Insider Hub, but they appear as strings like "P~Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft".

    They're used with our printing system and our cashless catering system, neither of which have any sort of sign-in feature available. You're right that they do have the card numbers stored in those databases, however they're both MS SQL databases rather than MySQL, can Raspberry Pis talk to MS SQL? I imagine we could do it as a student project but I was just wondering if anything already existed.

    We'd definitely be open to something like that, but has anyone already written software that can do that? We unfortunately don't have any developers on our staff.

    My understanding is it's just for the purpose of measuring utilisation of the gym area. We don't need a big expensive flashy visitor management system (we can't afford such a thing anyway) but were wondering if there's anything better than just a ramshackle Access database available.

    Wasn't quite sure which forum this needed to go in, please let me know if there's a better one it should be in. Currently our sports hall uses a paper sign-in sheet for students to sign in, which staff then transfer to a homegrown Access database. We'd like to bring this into the 21st century. Students already have mifare cards as ID cards, so we were wondering if there's something (preferably inexpensive) which could be used for this purpose?     We're looking around for a system which can help us manage our Reprographics provision more effectively and efficiently. In particular the sorts of things we'd want to be able to do are as follows: The system needs to allow manual input of job tickets by the reprographics technician (in addition to end users being able to submit files electronically) as we do still get plenty of hardcopy jobs in Reprographics For jobs where the cost would be above a certain value, we’d need jobs to be approved/authorised by the Head of Department of the person that requested the job, and we’d need that cost to be displayed on the approval screen When a job is accepted and approved, an email acknowledgement needs to be sent to the person who requested the job (which may be different to the person who input the job into the system) The system then needs to put together a job schedule in a FIFO manner but with the ability for jobs to jump the queue if special authorisation is provided The job schedule should be in a daily format so that the reprographics technician can see what jobs need processing today and can update the status of each one as it is done The system would need to have some form of reporting and/or dashboard for service level agreement monitoring The system would need to be able to work with our existing Sharp reprographics copiers We do already have PaperCut MF for our regular print management, but while it does have a Job Ticketing addon available for reprographics rooms now, it doesn't seem like this would meet all the needs described above.     It's not that it failed, just there wasn't really any driving factor behind it at the time we were looking at it, and priorities have shifted since then. EDIT: to be clear, we didn't have a wide deployment of Chromebooks or anything, it was literally just one Chromebook we bought in to evaluate the viability of it.

    Yes that is what happened to me also. I think we emailed them to explain the situation and it eventually got approved. But our Chromebook project has fallen by the wayside so we are not really doing any more work on it at this time.

    When using our test student accounts we've noticed that the Windows+E key combination to bring up Explorer comes up with the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions" etc. However, I checked and in Group Policy we do not have that setting "Turn off Windows+X hotkeys" enabled.     Unity 3D, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects are the main ones I believe. With Premiere Pro one of the issues that's been reported is when they save a project to a UNC path, if they then open it through Explorer using the mapped U:\ drive it has to relink all the files that are part of the project or something - I'm hoping that switching to a drive letter redirect might cure this issue.

    This is what we have at the moment, but this results in a UNC path and some software (Unity 3D for example) is not compatible with this.

    Is it bad to redirect the Documents folder using a GPO to the mapped drive of the user home directory? I seem to remember reading something that said that, but I can't find it, nor can I find anything which might explain why it's bad (if it's bad). Currently we're using the "redirect to home folder" setting which actually redirects to the user's UNC path, and some software doesn't like that. So I was wondering if it would be safe for us to set it to %HOMEDRIVE% so that their default save location shows up as U:\ instead of the UNC path?

    I just used that as an example, they could be displaying a powerpoint or anything else that involves a class of students needing to be able to look at the screen without any need for the teacher to be moving the mouse or keyboard for many minutes.

    I looked at the scheduled task inactivity trigger. However it seems it is not user inactivity but PC inactivity? So if there is some program still running then the PC is not considered "idle".

    I've just received some updated information, apparently the warning message is only for classroom teaching/projector PCs, so that for example if a teacher is playing a video for a class then they get a warning before the computer gets locked due to inactivity.

    Senior management have asked us to look at implementing policy to lock computers automatically after a period of inactivity, which we can do. However the wrinkle in this is that (for classroom teaching/projector PCs specifically) they also want an inactivity warning to be displayed on the screen a few minutes before the computer will be locked. [uPDATED] I've googled around and found various software that can do that and then log off the computer after the timeout, but I can't seem to find any that just lock the computer. Can anyone suggest anything? To try and clarify with an example what we want to do, supposing we had a screen lock set for 10 minutes of inactivity, then at 5 minutes say we would want a warning to display on the screen saying "your computer will be locked in 5 minutes" or similar.

    We've got a Western Digital passport USB3 hard drive, which on a certain PC only works in the USB2 ports and not in the USB3 ports. The PC is Windows 7, but it definitely has the correct USB3 drivers installed - a regular USB stick works when plugged into the USB3 ports. My manager suggested that he had seen this problem before and that it could be solved by backing up and then reformatting the USB hard drive on the affected PC, however in this instance that did not work.     It did not work at all (not even the first time) with "Grant the user exclusive rights to Documents == on". Though we would not want them to have full control on this folder anyway. I have tried it with "Move the contents of Documents to the new location == on" however this did not seem to make any difference. I already have "Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed == on" set. EDIT: It looks like we have been able to work around this issue by enabling "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" in Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles.
