Following @DaveP's delight at discovering the word 'gruntled' and @ModeratelyGruntled's suggestion regarding how one may feel when one is neither over nor underwhelmed, I thought it was about time that there was a place for such etymological musings. And so the (not MS) Word was born! Here's one to start things off. If there are many teeth but only one tooth, and there are many geese but only one goose, why isn't one sheep called a shoop?

We have shared folders for each class where children can save their work so that it is easily accessible by the teacher. It took me a while, but I've configured permissions so that while pupils are able to open a read only copy of any file, they can only modify and delete files that they have created.

The problem appears to be that the Set-Mailbox command runs remotely on the Exchange Online server. Although I have created a PSSession and set OperationTimeout options, PowerShell creates another implicit remote session to run the Set-Mailbox command. It is this implicit session that terminates after two minutes, and I appear to have no control over this implicit session. I MUST be doing something wrong, as it seems crazy to give users the ability to automate tasks... provided they sit and wait to enter their credentials every two minutes.

I've looked at that page already and tried setting the -OperationTimeout to 0 when I first connect, but it still asks for a password when I first run a Set-Mailbox script with an imported CSV and again after two minutes. Edit: In the Powershell command line it says "Creating a new session for implicit remoting of Set-Mailbox command..." whenever it prompts for a password.

Not sure whether I should post this here or in the Scripts forum. I'm using PowerShell to manage Office 365 mailboxes. When I first connect, I store the credentials in a $cred variable and I am able to run commands. However, if I try to run a command after the connection has been established for longer than 2 minutes, I am prompted to re-enter my password. The same thing happens after the next two minutes. Even when running a long script that imports values from a CSV file, I am prompted for a password mid-flow. I'm sure I never used to have this problem. What am I doing wrong?

We use the online version, too, and the Exchange Admin Centre to which you link is very limited. Using PowerShell gives you so much more control. It may take a while to get your head around it at first but, once you've got even a basic understanding, it will make your job so much easier. Glad you got it sorted, though.

Thanks for the info, @RLR. We don't (currently) have any iPads in school, but that is certainly useful for the future. At the moment, I'm more concerned about recommending an app for parents to download and use on personal devices. Although I would always add a disclaimer to any recommendation, I'd also want to be sure that any risk to pupil safety was minimised.

+1 for O365info.com. I would definitely recommend getting your head around using PowerShell and CSVs.

We recently bought a @VeryPC Classmate 2-in-1 for a LAC to use at home and in school. It's not joined to the domain, but I've enabled Internet access via our proxy. While it is now his personal property, if he has an issue with it that affects his ability to use it at school, then I'm happy to look at it. If he's having problems installing Crafty Minebirds or whatever, then that's nothing to do with me. If there were to be a hardware fault, I'd be happy to contact tech support and return it on his behalf if necessary. If it turned out to be something not covered by warranty, we would advise his carers of any costs before agreeing to them and charge them accordingly. This isn't something I would want to do if we started a scheme to offer personal equipment to all pupils, but for a few LACs - not an issue to me.

We have subscriptions to ActiveLearn Abacus and Interactive-Resources that allow pupils to access the sites from home. As many children are using tablets that don't support Flash, many of the activities won't work. Interactive Resources advised me that the activities 'will require the Puffin Academy App'. I've read some of the negative posts about use of the Puffin Academy browser compromising security in school, but where do I stand on recommending it for use at home? Also, has anyone had a look at Photon Edu? This is not a free app and is currently only available for iPads, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

It's =datevalue(b2), and the cell formatting needs to be set to date. It was easier to just export it to word in .rtf format and just copy and paste the table. It's ridiculous there is no similar option for Excel. Thanks for the pointer, though. I didn't know about the date/datevalue functions. I'm sure they'll come in handy in the future.

Our school secretary was trying to export a report to Excel. In the preview, the DOB field was in DD/MM/YYYY format, but it in Excel it was DD Month YY. She couldn't change the format, as it was exported as text not a number. If the report is exported as RTF, there is an explicit option to export dates as numbers. Any ideas how to do this for Excel?

Why trim it when you're only just starting to get a bit of body in it? Give it a few more weeks when you can have a trim and still keep some substance.

During our last OFSTED in November, one of the inspectors told me that our website was excellent because it had lots of information and was very easy to navigate - '...and I look at a LOT of school websites.' Praise indeed.

Surely it is up to the SLT to ensure that the website meets statutory criteria, in the same way that they are responsible for ensuring that lesson planning meets the National Curriculum requirements. Much of the required content needs to come from the SLT in the first place in the form of policies. You can check whether you have uploaded the content, but how do you know, for example, that the behaviour policy complies with section 89 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006?

About flippin' time we had some proper winter weather. All we've had is perpetual autumn since the end of October 2014!

To be honest, I hardly use the Internet at home. I watch, perhaps, 2-3 films/concerts a week and that's pretty much it. The occasional bit of web-browsing I can do on my phone. I didn't even own a computer until just before Christmas. That's why I begrudge paying £28 a month.

This has reminded me that I need to phone Virgin Media again. The £1.75 price increase actually turned into a £7.75 increase because the £6 'loyalty discount' I negotiated last time ended in November. Apparently, I'm scheduled to upgrade to 70 in April. I'm quite happy with the 30Mbps I'm on, thankee, now put my bill back down to £20 a month, please.

All I'm going to say is that whoever used it last forgot to rewind it before returning it!
