That's given me another idea! As it's not a massive VHD (unlike the file-server), I could even export it to a removable drive and run it on my (school) laptop at home. Updates certainly wouldn't take as long that way. (Seriously, my cheap home FTTC Internet connection is faster than the one for the whole school!) If I had the time (and the knowledge!) I'd have done a clean install of Server 2019 and configured it from scratch, but you gotta work with what you're given. Thanks, guys. I feel a lot more reassured after reading your posts.

We still have VM running Server 2008R2 acting as a backup DC, print controller and AV remote management, which I'm hoping to upgrade to 2012R2 over the Christmas holidays. I've never done an in-place server upgrade before so I wanted a bit of advice. As its a virtual server, I thought about running the update on an exported copy rather than just creating a checkpoint. If the update worked OK, I'd just leave the old one turned off. What have others done? Are there any particular pitfalls I should look out for? Thanks in advance.

Right! I’ve done some research and here’s my ideal crawl route: The Ferret (obviously) - The Moorbrook - Guild Ale House - The Otter’s Pocket - Plug & Taps. My last train leaves at 9.30, so I doubt I’ll manage to fit them all in, but I’ll give it a darned good try. £18 return on the train from Leeds, @sted. Just think what you’ll be missing.

There's something civilised about an afternoon pint, especially of a weekend. I don't know about anyone else*, but I certainly will be! It seems a bit of a waste visiting a town and not sampling its hospitality. (*anyone else is welcome to join me.)

I've no idea where you're going to park your train!

One I really liked was one that I saw in the Baltic in Gateshead, back in 2006. It was a table of fruit with electrodes stuck into it that were connected to tiny circular saws. The acid from the decaying fruit powered the saws, which slowly cut into the table legs, thereby perpetuating the cycle of self-destruction. I thought it was pretty cool. Darned if I can find a link to it, though.
