We are currently investigating mobile devices for students and which way to go. I have no strong feeling either way but was hoping that you could give me some idea as to what you use, any pitfalls you encountered, or any good working practices that came out of your roll up. My biggest concern with the apples is there lack of functionality within our domain environment. My dream scenario would be for students to be able to access their network areas in the same fashion as they do now (via mapped network drives). Any and all suggestions would be gratefully received! It is worth double checking all of this with Softlink as I built up a new Server 2008 R2 system last year after their sales chap telling me all would be ok. When the technician remoted in to do the move (yes I paid the money, just didn't have the time) he told me that Oliver would not run on Server 2008 R2, so I had to rebuild the server to 2003.

I'm sorry, I think I never made my question clear enough. I am well aware of what could happen etc. What I was hoping to find out is if there is away to either stop students from changing passwords via permissions, security settings / group policy, or if there is a way to gray out the username field so they can only change their own password.

Hi All, Whilst testing our Windows 7 group policies I have found a rather large security flaw. When a user changes their password by ctrl+alt+del and selecting change a password, they can change the username and enter a new password for that user (obviously they need to know the users original password). Students can also change domain admin accounts :-/ I tested this on Windows XP and I get exactly the same result. I have checked over the net but nothing obvious is appearing. Can anyone help with this issue?

You can download an extractor from Microsoft that pulls the GPOs from server setup.exe. its just a case then of importing them into the correct OU

No, there is no MSI but only took a matter of minutes to knock up an MSI and roll it out. You can setup other features in GP such as how much memory and CPU to utilize during specific times of day, when to run a full scan etc, its easy to setup and manage.

In complete contradiction to the above reply no you do not need SCCM to run the latest version of Forefront Endpoint Protection. I am running it on our school domain, and it works like a treat. You do need SCCM to use full functionality of the product, reports etc, but I configured the client’s to save to a txt file on the local C drive, so I can just look at that should the need arise. You can configure updating locations, scanning times and security settings via group policy. Overall I am extremely impressed with the software!

Now before reading any further I know this a fairly ridiculous question! We need to replace our failing wax printer with a colour laser jet fairly soon and was wondering if any of you had any suggestions for a "quiet" printer. The reason I am asking for quiet suggestions is that it will be sitting next to the heads PA. The current printer is so noisy when someone is printing she cannot hear anyone on the other end of the phone, including parents :-/ We would prefer Xerox or HP. Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi, After setting up new GPOs over the holidays to take over from our CC3 install which is now all but gone (yay!) I came across a strange problem. When anyone logged in their home folder (setup in AD) was redirecting to the root of the share and not their folder as specified. After lots of investigation it looked as if it was a problem with group policy and the time taking to apply to the local computers. Sadly this was just a case of misdirection. If you are having the same problem may I suggest you take a look at the link below as it solved my problem straight away. The Home Folder may be mapping incorrectly when logging on to a Windows XP-based computer Enjoy!

Hi All, I am also in the process of removing CC3 from our network. I have made up new OU's with inheritance disabled and setup associated GPs for them. I then ested GPs on both RM and vanilla desktops. All seem ok. The next move for us is to reimage all the computers back to vanilla and then decomission and rebuild our servers one at a time. It would be good to keep contact between us so we can let each other know of any issues we may have run into! Please feel free to PM me for my email address. Good luck! Jamie

You can download the Group Policy snap in from the MS website. It will work as long as you have domain admin rights. If you do not I would be questioning this with your NM.

I have not every worked with Novell so cannot comment on that, however for simple things such as flash you can roll out the MSI via group policy......
