Got to say I agree with the premise that Tablets are generally consumer devices aimed for output rather than dev tools/ serious academic devices used for any kind of authoring. The ergonomics of the device dictate it's uses. Of course there will be some who insist that it can be used in such a way. You CAN off-road in fiat 500, knock nails in with hammer and go to work in Bermuda shorts, flippers and a snorkel, doesn't mean it's the right tool for the job though.

We use one of these Datavideo DVK-200 SD Chromakey. I have it set up with 2 computers and a DV camera. One PC provides the background, the camera the foreground and it outputs the processed image to the 2nd PC which we have also displaying on a Whiteboard so the "actors" can see what they are doing. It's a few years old and I find the inputs a little limiting. If you use DVI for the background PC it only leaves you SVGA as a sensible option for the camera. Ir could do with an extra DVI/DP/HDMI. We also had to buy a vga to USB converter to for the 2nd PC. It would have been better with a video capture card but we needed a cheaper option at the time.

We moved and went O365 for our email at the same time. Go-Daddy were suprisingly easy. DNS records updated in minutes. Avoid 1-2-1, A local school had to move from them to Go-Daddy because they couldn't access the DNS resords. That's why we went Go_daddy off the bat.

Hello, Flasma are gone, they went bankrupt in 2012. I have a computer running a flasma unit that I need to re-install. But we've never had the flasma software. Does anyone have a copy or know where to get it?

Stock, spares, contracts all going over to Kelway. RM will still be selling warranties on the 3rd party kit they sell but using Kelway to deliver the service. If the OP had called for service this week instead of last he wouldn't be any the wiser. It was just unlucky that he called when they were in the middle of the move. Atleast they timed it during school holidays. I called them to swap out a HD in a server this week. Raised the call in the afternoon, engineer on site at 9am the next day. Strangely I recognised him as an ex E2E engineer.

In the middle of a move to fully managed solution from Apogee. Seems OK. 3 MFD, and around 20 laser printers, mainly mono to encourage use of the MFDs. It's a special school so we try to keep people in classroom as much as possible. All ricoh devices. Some driver issues at first with the Mono printers. Ended up ditching the drivers and going for generic ones. The support was not fantastic. On site guys are all on stop watch and telephone support involves a lot of leg work for me. Paper cut is getting installed soon. Interestingly these guys took all the old printer stock as a trade in and bought the school out of their old photocopier contract.

We use Educare AV Services Ltd. 100s of installs by them. Always top notch work and they are easy to talk to. You can probably get cheaper, but hard to beat the workmanship.

Come on people. Read the article before you post. It's not saying Tablets are bad. It's saying that "addiction" to them can cause problems. "A motion put forward by Northern Irish teacher Mark Montgomery argues that symptoms of tablet addiction include “withdrawal”, “loss of interest in or ‘crowding out’ other activities”, “lack of control”, “irritability” and even “deception and furtiveness”. Even the most ardent supporter of Mobile Devices is going to agree that someone displaying those behaviors has a problem and access to technology must be re-evaluated for that person.

Seems to me that you are not so much as removing RM as starting over with new servers. Which is exactly what I would do. Get your new servers early, even if you can't rack them up until the old ones come out. Set up your network on a separate IP range as a new domain. Or Use a separate switch for this if you don't have layer 3 switching or can't config your own vlans. Build test stations. Migrate your user accounts while your existing network carries on. Decide on what you want to control via GPOs in advance and get them working. Test Everything, printers, internet, filtering, just everything. Then at switchover you need to just migrate data and rebuild the clients. This could be phased if you have the rack space for both sets of servers.

We've got 15 of these but we've set them up to use RM Books via the browser. TBF, could be any android, they didn't need kindles to do this.

What makes Smart think that people will be using their software in 5 years time? 5 years ago there was no such thing as an iPad. Look how things are changing.

I don't know where the £120 per screen comes from. Introducing SMART Notebook Advantage - MySMARTSpaces Looks like £34/yr, cheaper if you licence more screens or take out a longer term. Even at £20/yr/screen, it would still cost my small schools around £500/yr to keep one piece of software up to date! Time for Smart to get real.

Last time I checked you can install it on unlimited devices on your site for Prep work but not on any device with a touch screen.

Got about 20 Hitachi 220s and one later model (222 I think) they are good projectors. Nothing flash but they do what they say they will. Good remote feature that I don't really use. 4000-5000 hours out of a lamp is realistic.

Yes, it caches all suspect activity as screen grabs. Even on a laptop that has been taken home. It then uploads the images when it connects again. It can't be disabled (very easily anyway). It also isn't internet only monitoring. Anything on screen at all is captured.

I sometimes get asked for generic accounts. In exceptional cases I do give them. The accounts are always formatted teachername01. I make it clear that the named teacher is wholley responsible for what happens on those accounts. I only ever give them for a limited period of time and deleted them afterwards.

It is always best practice to have individual log ons. The only place where it may not be appropriate is in special schools for children with profound learning difficulties where staff have to log on for them and supervise everything they do. If you are with an ISP like Northern Grid for learning then it stipulates this their AUP that the schools and LA have to abide by Northern Grid Acceptable Use Policy 2011-2012 - Northern Grid for Learning.
