I've seen one Y11 project take about 4-5 weeks to do. Its content - making a movie with Windows Moviemaker. Like that crappy little toy is going to be used in industry anywhere. There has to be more to IT than telling kids to Google information and pictures and stick them into Powerpoint.

The only ITV programme I watch is Corrie and I've noticed branded products (rather than the fake "Betterbuy" brand) making more of an appearance in the past couple of months.

We use WSUS in the same way. Any non-essential and hardware updates get done during the holidays.

I learnt Wordwise and Interword for two years on BBC Micros at school. A fat lot of good that did me! Same with PASCAL and LOGO, although I use the latter to demo robotics to our IT Club. Which is why I have a real bug in my bonnet as to why MS Office should be the preferred application and others can't get a look in.

All you need is a simple batch file to do a WOL and then do a shutdown a minute or two later. Quick, simple and free and all you need to do is double-click the file to run it. You could even design a web front end with a map of your school's IT rooms.

"open learning spaces" are just a disaster waiting to happen. I've personally seen these spaces in use and seen one child kick off which has caused everyone to stop and watch the drama unfold. This doesn't happen in a single contained classroom. And in other open spaces with elevated walkways (like in a shopping mall) I've seen kids throw stuff (bags, coats, litter) over the side and even witnessed students leering down at female sixth former's cleavages. Not to mention the cost of heating and cooling these spaces. Cathedrals of glass look very pretty, but cost a fortune to maintain.

Panic over, a few reboots and its back to normal times. The error only appeared on HP DC7x00 machines though.

I think one of the .NET updates has upset some of my machines. I'm now getting "applying computer settings" for about 30 seconds as opposed to five, and this error in the Event Log which I think is the culprit: .NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Tried to start a service that wasn't the latest version of CLR Optimization service. Will shutdown

We also get this on a sysprepped machine. Running the WMP installer on silent sorts it.
