I recall a very similar discussion with a BSF consultant, he said: "Students will be mature enough to be responsible for their internet use and won't use it for games playing, Facebook or looking at adult material" The only students I knew like that were mature students I was at uni with!

I really am finding it hard to believe we're in a bad financial position. I was in a Ford dealership at the weekend, they were absolutely swamped with people buying new cars. The manager said they'd never been so busy (is it new plate time or something?) and people were waiting to be served because they didn't have enough sales staff (eight). Weeknights and weekends in Liverpool are full of shoppers laden down with bags of goodies. Pubs and restaurants are full. I'm not saying the problem doesn't exist, just that people I've seen don't seem to be letting it bother them and their spending. But, just to make the point political, anyone remember Gordon Brown and the reducing of the VAT to 15% - "lets spend our way out of recession"? No Gordon, lets put out money aside for a rainy day like our parents and grandparents did.

I think you just have to accept that things have changed since our parents day. "Back in the day" it was quite rare if you owned a car, or a colour TV set. When my folks bought their place, they relied on hand-me-down furniture and lived on beans & toast and generally lived frugally. Then the kids came along when you were in a better financial position. Now people get a house but that's not enough, they want new carpets, new furniture, a big TV. And they already have the kids. The mindset of "you must own property" needs to be re-thought. It's not the be-all-and-end-all of life. There's no gold star for having a crippling mortgage and stretching yourself to live beyond your means, particularly buying at a terrible time like now.

I'm surprised if you'll get any takers then. ICT Direct sell a lot of Core 2 machines to schools for around £125, so I can't imagine anyone throwing stuff of this spec out - especially for free.

I've got a fair number of Netgear gigabit switches.

I took out a mortgage in 2000 and to be honest I'm glad I got out of it. I didn't like the idea of being tied down, or the hassle of selling and buying again, and the whole chain. It's nice to own your own house (but isn't it the bank's until you pay it off?) but there's the associated repairs and upkeep. And what happens when you die? It gets sold and then your kids argue over who gets what percentage which they'll probably blow on a car or holiday. Is it really worth all that effort? I much prefer my philosophy of renting and then moving on when I get bored of an area, not have to worry about repairs and just enjoy my life.

I just record the entire tape to a single MP4 file using an Aldi USB video converter (Belkin Videobus clone) then use Virtual Dub to extract the individual programmes to smaller files. Providing copyright and ERA rules allow of course.

The ones which get my business are the ones which don't ring to "see if I need anything". Yes, I quite often sit here with dead computers and monitors waiting for you to call so I can ask for parts or replacements.
