I don't think it's the Government. I think it's Whitehall that are driving these things. We've had two and a bit different parties in power and they are both coming up with ID schemes and monitoring schemes and for want of a better phrase schemes to micro manage the population. Which is a little unlikely unless the Whitehall mandarins are pushing the issue to whoever is the home secretary at the time. Yes Minister was closer to the truth than people know.

Stephen Byers, Patricia Hewitt and Geoff Hoon are under investigation over their apparent willingness to help a lobbying firm in return for cash. The thing is you can do this tit-for-tat arguing between parties endlessly (like with the milk thing), that's politics for you. But there are some good politicians out there. My former local MP spent years tirelessly doing local work and in every newsletter never bothered to put in any nasty stories about his rivals, even though they constantly threw muck around.

Does anyone remember the Saturday lunchtime ITV TV show Whizz Kids? A group of nerdy kids solving crimes using their computer? IIRC it was one of the first shows to do the old "zoom on that part of the grainy blocky picture and enhance"

The economy was good but it was scandal after scandal with the Tories at the time. Barely a week went by without some extra marital affair or cash for questions and whatnot. And the whole regime was tired and stale, the country was ready for a change. The Tories needed time in opposition to re brand and change. And for a time it was a change of good. But then the honeymoon period ended. But there is an issue with certain people having problems with their political memories. They see Thatcher as the ultimate evil who stole milk (yet Labour did it first, funny how nobody remembers that). They also remember the miners strike, but don't remember the problem about UK coal being too sulphurous, and quickly forgot how Brown was one of the most disliked PMs in recent times, ID cards, PFIs and BSF and so on.

Never. I collect a lot of local history and travel books, particularly old ones from the turn of the 20th century. I believe it was very easy to abuse this scheme - I've seen posts on fora where people brag they've bought it and they don't have kids. I can't say because I haven't seen it from a student point of view since 2003. But back then you got an empty product box with paperwork that had to be completed by the user, and then stamped and signed by their educational institution. This was faxed to MS and the discs sent out to the customer.

When this happens I usually print to CutePDF and then get Adobe Reader to print off. Works every time.

I hear a lot of stories from people who claim that part-worns are unsafe and risky and you don't know the history. But if that were the case they'd be illegal. They'd also be highlighted as the cause in road crashes. Does anyone who buys a second hand car replace all four tyres because they're part worn and the history is not known?

I'm more of a second hand book reader but I bought a Kindle last month and haven't regretted it. My only problem is that I tend to dip in and out of several books at once rather than concentrating on one. Before the Kindle I tried e-reading apps on my tablet (Kogan) but the screen glow isn't pleasant for long term reading. No problem there with the Kindle, it blows the tablet out of the water for e-reading.

I don't feel anything either way, but I am saddened at the way The Reg has become more of a comic than a serious source of IT news with a bit of humour thrown in. Incidentally, when Whitney Houston died, Sony put up the price of her albums on iTunes. Apple got the blame of cashing in, even though it had nothing to do with it. In the end Apple reduced the price to pre-death prices and absorbed the loss. But I don't recall anything being mentioned about this.

My favourite is Unreal Media Streaming, but we currently use Windows Streaming Media Server.

I'm a diesel owner myself and I'd also say don't get one if you're only doing short local trips. Even if your model doesn't have a DPF it will have an EGR valve that will get gummed and sooted up, and depending where it's sited on the car may be an expensive, drop the engine job to replace!
