Office 365/2013 - Student Advantage/ProPlus free for staff
steewy replied to Kitkatninja's topic in Office Software
Well you need to setup Office365 for your school. All schools will have: Office 365 Education E1 for Faculty Office 365 ProPlus for Faculty Office 365 Education E1 for Students Office 365 ProPlus for Students It's for free. Once you have your school admin account enable just log on here. In your admin console YOU need to create accounts for students and staff. Accounts can be automatically created if you use a tool (can't remember the name) that will sync your AD online and generate accounts for you. It is agains our school policy so I created the accounts manually. Once the accounts are created, students will log on on the same page as your admin and will be able to access to Office365. Make sure when you create the accounts to grant a licence to the users. -

Office word 2010/2013 - Disable Spell Check for student and exams
steewy replied to steewy's topic in Office Software
This is also what I used to do. The registry key was the last thing I needed. It know works and it has been a long time since I was looking into a way to make it work. -
Hi, Just posting to share how I have manage to disable spell check on word 2010/2013 for students taking exams. Mods, if the topic isn't in the right thread feel free to move it. I have never find any topic anywhere so far that managed to help me completely disable spell check on Word 2010/2013 so here is how you can do it. 1 - You need to install office 2010/2013 GPO Template on your server. You will need to use AdminTemplates_32.exe or AdminTemplates_64.exe not according to your server but according to what version of Office you installed on your clients ! Extract the .exe in a folder. Copy the .admx files to %systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions and copy the .adml files from the en-us to %systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions\en-us. If you do not copy the .adml files you will get an error once you open the group policy templates ! 2 - I want spell check to be disable only for a group of user so my policy is user based. Create a new GPO and follow and copy the settings from the attached files. I used IDs to disable user shortcuts and disable some buttons on the UI. 3 - After all this, my GPO was working but Word could still pick up any spelling mistake. There is a registry key that is being activated per user on the machine. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Office] "WordSpellingOptions"=dword:0 If dword=5 then spell check is still enable even if your GPO is disabling spell check ! To get around this, like your probably see on my GPO I am creating the registry key when users logon. The key was already present for some users so I also Update the key for some of them ! When an other user logs on, spell check is enable, the registry key only apply by user To make things easier, I already included the key in the zip file attached. Hope that helps. GPO.zip

[ipad] Apple TV's have names with brackets after - why?
steewy replied to kennysarmy's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Mine are all back on (2) so I guess clearing the DNS caches only temporary fixed it. Anyone on (4) ? -
We have a RDP server here and staff can use it but not students. I think it's too much time consuming settings up rdp on the iPads and explaining to students how it works and how to use it. For staff it's an other story as they like to have access to their software and documents while they are in a meeting. I think it's just quicker to use a computer and that's what they do, they just book a class set of laptops.

[ipad] Apple TV's have names with brackets after - why?
steewy replied to kennysarmy's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi, We have the same "issue" here. It's related to DNS on your network. Clear your dns cache on your server or allocate a fix IP address to your apple TV and You won't have this issue anymore. I don't think it's a big deal because the ATV works -
I won't try it because once again the content won't be filtered by the school. It is saying in the description it's using an external server so students will be able to access to facebook and any internet content.

I use airdrop to transfer the files. I airdrop the files from the iPad to the mac and then copy them onto the server from the mac. Webdav is also a good solution

AppleTV's and streaming videos from an iPad
steewy replied to Garacesh's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
We tend to have this issue here too. I called apple and it seems like so far no solution. Since updating the apple TV to the latest update it works better, but still get every so often the same issue again ! It seems like it's related to network issues. You need to make sure the Bonjour service is authorise to run on your wireless network. It still doesn't explain why it sometimes works and why sometimes it doesn't. -
Ok good luck. my 2 emails addresses are ict@schooldomain and ictvpp@schooldomain. You will see it's not that complicated, it gets crazy when you need to push apps remotely using MDM. Let me know how it goes.
-
1- Yes I do mean connect a new account to the mac and authorise it on iTunes. (in iTunes, store -- Authorise this machine or computer) 2- It's normal. When you purchase a free app you don't need to get it from the VPP store EXPECT if it's to add this free app to a MDM like Meraki for example. In your case, all free apps need to be purchased on the mac, in iTunes via your second account. I basically have one account on the mac and a second one for the VPP store and the paid apps.
-
OK. Well in that case, create a second account, connect this account to iTunes and authorise the account on the machine. When you are on the VPP store (using your VPP account), if you purchase any apps, make sure you ask for redeemable codes. You will receive a copy by email of the codes or you will be able to download a csv file from the VPP store purchases history. Once you have done this, use one of the codes to redeem the app on iTunes using your second account. Import the app in apple configurator, which will detect that this app is a paid app ! Once the paid app is there, click on "add redeem codes" and that's it. For free apps just use your second account and download a free app and import the app to apple configurator. Here is an old link but really useful !! Be careful about adding your VPP account on the iPads, students are smart and could either block your account or make some purchases....
-
Hi, Just be aware that you can not use the same ID for the VPP store and iTunes. You need to separate accounts. The VPP account allows you to purchase apps online and the other account allows you to redeem the codes in iTunes and push the apps via apple configurator. Now there is 2 way of using your 2 accounts depending on if those iPads are for staff or students ? MDM or apple configurator. Let me know what your iPads would be for and I will explain how to do it. If you buy apps on VPP store you can either get redeemable codes are MDM.

I decided not to use Puffin Academy or any type of those apps for a few reasons. None of the content can be filtered by us, so students will be able to access to any content they want without being filtered and this is a massive issue for children safety ! The app is using a lot of IP addresses that need to be unblock in the firewall and it has been recommended to me not to unblock those. I guess students will use computers for any flash activities. The main website I wanted to use on the iPads will soon be HTML5 so the issue will be solved.
-
I need to test puffin Academy, I'll let you know if it's any good. I also need to access to a few flash websites
-
It happened to me. Even if you manage the iPad, you will need the user to type his password to get pass the activation ! You have the option in meraki to bypass activation lock but it has to be done before you format the iPad (while the iPad is still linked to Meraki basically).
-
You can install the certificates via apple configurator. Add them to your mac, make sure you change the security to trust on all of them and import them into your profile.

iPad on network but unable to access internet
steewy replied to Jehanzeb's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi, Can you reset the iPad to factory settings and connect it to the WiFi manually and see if the internet works ? If the internet works, it means your apple configurator settings are wrong. Make sure you add all your wifi certificates to apple configurator and authorise them all before use. Also check the credentials, or security settings you use in Apple Configurator If this doesn't work it means it's related to your IP ad, check from the server and monitor that IP and see if it's being blocked from using the internet. -
TAPESTRY App - crashing when running behind a proxy
steewy replied to bertster's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
If you contact tapestry they will let you know which port and address you need to authorise on your proxy. It works fine for me at our school, I had to unblock a few things from the server. -
Meraki - Push IOS apps with no password promt ???
steewy replied to mikkydoos's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
1 - If you are VPP registered you can push apps without having a password popping up. To do so you need to take your VPP token from the VPP website, and link it to Meraki in the VPP tab. Once the link is enable you will be able to purchase apps on the VPP store, refresh meraki VPP and see the apps your purchase. Now you need to add user and list the apple account they are using. Once you add the users to Meraki VPP you need to invite them, they click on the link they received via email and log on to iTunes once. Only then you can push apps to them 2 - No need of a credit card for teachers or students. 3 - If teachers create their ID like here in my school, ask them to open the appstore, purchase a free app and create the account so they can have the option to select NONE as payment option. Some teachers didn't follow my steps properly so they added their credit card and we took it off just after the account was setup.
